It's Christmas Eve, which is the main Christmas event in Finland. Tomorrow is just... more food and books. I've had a lovely week so far and today's plans are essentially sauna, Christmas meal, presents, coffee, chilling. I have many chapters of Wheel of Time book to read... And my friend T is coming over to spend Christmas with us. I'm desperately trying to get all the ficlets written this year also posted so expect more spammage of that kind before NY.

It's been cold here and I snapped this picture from our garden a couple of days ago when it was -16C and everything was beautiful with frost.

Firstly, I am verklempt over the lovely comments on my Holiday Meme tread. I also definitely know who some of the people responsible but to protect them from having to openly discuss icky feelings I'm going to pretend I don't.

Secondly, after at least a couple of years of not having energy for these things, I have signed up for

fandomtrees. You can find my extensive list of fandom requests here. I honestly could have continued for much longer but had to cut it off somewhere so we have: Guardian, Guardian RPF, Harry Potter, Good Omens, BTS (sigh, I know), MCR, FOB, PATD, Start Trek AOS, Grimm, MCU and Witcher. Being multifandom is a gift and a burden.

I've strolled through the entries posted so far and identified some with tempting prompts... And have about 1k for one of them at the moment, whoo writing!

Thirdly...

We will be starting a read/reread of Book 1. Eye of the World on 1st of December, with initial schedule (to be adjusted if needed!) of roughly book per month. Besides that, any and all fanworks or other content relating to both the book series and the TV adaptation, are welcome on the community.

Happy Holidays!

I have had a very relaxing few days. Spent weekend with

pushkin666 and S, celebrating her birthday and then having Christmas on Saturday. Got lots of presents, including Good Omens DVD whee. Came home on Monday and finished Christmas prep including making traditional swede casserole with H's help. Had more presents from her, including a stack of fandom stickers (GO, Guardian, SPN, X-Files, FOB...) and a purple SPN print scarf. I squeed.

H went home around midday yesterday and I spent the evening chilling with music, candles and Christmas lights, alcohol and TV... Christmas dinner (yesterday and today) consisted of a beef joint, red cabbage sauteed with balsamico and lingonberry jam. From now on until the 2nd I'm on Me Time, featuring writing, good food, alcohol, TV, books, baths, maybe a bit of work. There will be posting but I foresee it being fics and end of year fic round-up rather than anything else.

So for now, I'll wish everyone peaceful holiday season, however you celebrate or don't.

Here is one of my favourite Nordic/Finnish* Christmas songs, although it doesn’t mention Christmas once. It’s about a kotitonttu** doing his rounds and pondering on an important question. A few years ago I translated the lyrics into English (translation of a translation of a translation but my Swedish is too rusty to go for the original), doing my best to keep the rhyme and meter both. A couple of lines are still a bit clumsy but on a whole it worked okay.

* The Finnish lyrics are a translation from a Swedish poem but the melody seems to vary from country to country.
**Notes on the term ‘tonttu’: The word itself is a Swedish loan and you can read about pan-Nordic mythology here. The Finnish word is haltija, and particularly here the song is talking about the kotitonttu or kotihaltija (house gnome, house elf, house guardian) rather than the Christmas version per se. I would also recommend reading the Haltija Wiki article. For the lyrics, I decided not to translate ‘tonttu’ because everything else (elf, gnome, brownie) just wasn’t quite right.

Anyway, I wanted to just share the delight of 'Holiday = Writing'! Zero writing this year because of reasons and now, over the last few days:

pushkin666 and I have co-written over 1k of crack fic for margaret_r's birthday. One word: BIRDIES.
I got my Guardian 520 Day Reverse Exchange assignment yesterday and today I have written over 2k on it already. Why? BECAUSE THE PROMPT IS THE BEST! Nghhh such id fic. (*sings to self* somebody's gonna get fucked against a wall...)
Also, also, I just opened the Venom ficlet I started eons again for the Scribblers writing challenge with pushkin666 and dreamersdare and... kind of finished it?

Idk how long this will last but am gonna ride it as hard and as far as I can.

Hello everyone! I have relocated to Finland for the festive period. So far it's been nice, cooking and baking and cleaning with mum. Sorting some dad's stuff as usual. S's new baby is here but I can't see her yet because I have a stinking cold and would rather not give it to a newborn
and new mum. T is coming over for Christmas to spend it with us like last year which will be nice.

I have also managed to squeeze in some writing time, sorting Lewis Winter Exchange assignments, finally watching Captain America (yes, I know, but it was always going to be one of those movies I'd end up catching when it was on TV and 'lo it finally was).

I've been absent a lot, I know, and honestly I'll probably continue to be absent some more. Life is just kind of full now. But DW(LJ) continues to be an important place for me. So, I'm hoping you all have a lovely time this midwinter season, however you celebrate.

trialia is a a dear friend of mine. We met through fandom many years ago, quickly met in real life and shared a city and lots of great times for several years. Despite dealing with multiple disabilities and medical issues, she is one of the most cheerful, kind and selfless people I know. When I was living in Manchester we saw each other regularly, watched movies, geeked out, cat sat for each other etc. Living close by also meant I was able to help her out with housework or other everyday tasks that are easy for me but difficult for her.

Right now, my friend is struggling, financially and in coping with the state of her home. And it's killing me that because of distance, I can't just pop over for a couple of hours to help out.

I've been to other conferences that have been much better and this one I just left feeling tired, rather than inspired and energised as you're supposed to. I'm pimping this for a friend and a very skilled story-teller, Jay Mountney aka moth2fic. She has published another book that is very much worth a read for anyone interested in fantasy and/or mystery genre.

I will let the author explain the plot in her own words:

The story is the first in a series called The Skilled Investigators. The ‘heroine’ is a female elf who wants to be an investigator (detective in our terms) and has to solve a murder mystery before she can be accepted as a trainee. Her assistants/sidekicks are a teenage dragon who imprinted on her at hatching, and her brother. The brother is gay and provides the romance subplot for the series but there is no explicit sex.

I read the first draft of the book some years ago and enjoyed immensely, I can't wait to read the final version! Just need to sort out a eReader app for my tablet...
