Next up we're going wild with this threesome from [personal profile] turps: Craig Revel Horwood, Clint Barton, Mikey Way

One Night Stand: Craig

Lol okay, listen, I'm not exactly his type you know. But everyone experiments sometimes and I was in the right club at right time, with the right amount of alcohol in each of our veins and he looked very nice in his dress. Sounded nice too, the dress rucked up to his waist, face pressed against sofa cushions.

Vanilla Fuckbuddy: Clint

It's not that this guy isn't willing to play non-vanilla, it's just that I know it won't be with me. He wants something a bit normal and occasionally dropping in to wine, dine and roll around in the sheets with a soft, middle-aged academic is part of that fantasy for him. I don't have the heart to shatter it because I suspect he doesn't have that many lifelines like this left.

Kinky Fuckbuddy: Mikey

Mikey almost always ends up in this category and I'm no apologetic about it or anything, because, have you seen him? He comes to me when he wants to hurt and he brings his own knives and zipties, chokes on my fingers like he's hungry for oblivion, face wet with tears and drool. He doesn't break but he bends and bends and bends so beautifully. He stays the night only because I insist, let's me hold him but it's mostly for me. He says thank you in the morning and drops out of contact for months. Until the next time.

Fic and Art Round-Up 2021

Somehow I did even worse with writing this year than I did in 2020. Didn't think it was possible but apparently yes. I did count up all the posted fics and wip scribblings from this year and they come up to just over 21k which is not nothing so...

Anyway, now that I have finally posted everything that was finished in 2021, even if I didn't quite get to posting all of it until this year, let's have a round-up

Fics written and finished in 2021 by Fandom:

Bandom
inadmissible (Patrick/Pete, T, 388 words) - on DW & on AO3

Buzzfeed Unsolved RPF
with fear, with fervent favor (Ryan/Shane, M, 300 words) – on DW  & on AO3

Craig and Bruno's Great British Road Trip
Carpe Diem (Craig/Bruno, G, 700 words) - on DW & on AO3

Friends RPF (i fucking know, okay)

gather your armour, raise your shield (Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, T, 3457 words) - on DW & on AO3

Guardian RPF
kiss by kiss (i cover your tiny infinity) (Bai Yu/Zhu Yilong, G, 737 words) - on DW & on AO3

Star Trek: Discovery
Averment (Michael & Sylvia, G, 406 words) - on DW & on AO3

Supernatural
Indelible (Sam/Dean, E, 4515 words) - on DW & on AO3

Non-fic things:

Meme Questions

Leitmotifs of the year:
Is 'not writing' a leitmotif? It should be. Anyway, apart for that it's probably... Ficlets. And gift fics. Most of the things I wrote were written for other people/from prompts.

Most popular story:
By metric of hits and kudos, it's Indelible. By metric of comments, it's weirdly Confined. Idk, Guardian fandom continues to be active AND interactive. This is supported by the fact that gather your armour, raise your shield hasn't been out more than a few days and is getting some gratifying pets.

My best story this year:
The one I only finished this year and therefore isn't listed here. Eh, okay, kiss by kiss (i cover your tiny infinity) captures the feeling. And, well, The One Where They Finally Talk About It  - yes, the fucking Friends RPF fic, idk how that happened either - actually does a solid job at the understated angsty feels.

Hardest story to write:
Nothing comes to mind here. Probably because I struggled with writing so much generally so when I did managed to produce something it felt easy by comparison!

Easiest story to write:
Uhh....? The One Where They Finally Talk About It poured out in a couple of days. Kiss It Better, Confined and kiss by kiss (i cover your tiny infinity) were all written in one day for a kissathon challenge (that was a good writing day), and Skipping Stone (will be continued, I swear I have half of ch2 in my wip folder) also was like one evening of angry typing.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Idk, everything feels appreciated. Like if you look at AO3 metrics Ad Astra is low but it's original gen ficlet so that's as expected. Same for Averment that is also a gen ficlet.

Most fun story to write:
gather your armour, raise your shield because the Venn diagram of [personal profile] trobadora's likes and mine is an almost total circle so I just got to shove in there all the characterisation and relationship dynamics I also enjoy. Carpe Diem probably because I really loved the series and it was self-indulgent.

Fluffiest story:

kiss by kiss (i cover your tiny infinity) is perhaps more... delicate than fluffy. pull my corners gently through has domestic fluff

Most angsty story:

inadmissible has 'fuck my bff that i also love turned into a vampire' thing going for it so...? The One Where They Finally Talk About It is sort of retrospective angst and addiction being dragged up. In Skipping Stone has some canon-compliant angst.

Sexiest story:
Indelible is actually the only explicit story I posted last year! Bruises and incest ftw? Someone did describe gather your armour, raise your shield as the 'kinkiest T rated story they've read' so I'll take that.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
The Friends RPF. Okay. I admit it. That was wrong, even for me. Otherwise there's nothing particularly unusual there. For me. Oh wait, there's fear kink in with fear, with fervent favor. Does that count?

Biggest Disappointment:
That the ambition of 'extra day off = extra day for writing' fell apart spectacularly on all accounts. Work honestly was shitty in the spring too and so was my health. Both things got better toward the summer and autumn/winter has been almost like normal and so too has my writing mojo. So, right direction?

Biggest Surprise:
That the total written (= more than the finished and posted listed here) was over 21k. The One Where They Finally Talk About It came out of left field and slapped me in the face.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:

Nothing I've written this year is in the 'dredged this from the pit of my soul' category. Maybe that's the problem?

Story I haven't yet written, but intend/hope to:
There's a little Good Omens fic I just tidied yesterday that will be posted shortly. Other than that there are various wips I'm poking at... Ch2 of Skipping Stone is probably closest to being posted. Auction fics are actually making little progress. That Hustlers fic is like 500 words from the finish line...

Title: Carpe Diem
Author: [personal profile] kat_lair / Mistress Kat
Fandom: Craig and Bruno's Great British Road Trips, Strictly Come Dancing RPF
Pairing: Craig/Bruno
Rating: G
Word count: 7x100
Disclaimer: Very not true

Summary: Little moments on the road.

Author notes: This was written for the Carpe Diem challenge, each drabble corresponding with the daily prompt. Posted on AO3 at the time but because I also like to have my fics on my DW, here it is.

Create: The final installment of Carpe Diem, little moments on the road with Craig and Bruno :) It's been really nice writing these two again!

Squee: Kat Recs All Fics... but (and this is the Plot Twist!) they are all f/m!

Vast majority of what I read (and write) is m/m. However, I do dapple in other combinations! So in honour of the 'unexpected' I present to thee Ten Het Fic Recs! All in different fandoms, because that's how this Fandom Slut rolls (extremely sluttily!)

Pi'maat Series by sixbeforelunch (OFC/OMC, Star Trek 'verse, DS9 timeline) - This is hands down one of the best things I've read in ages. The series (currently, very much hoping there will be more) is 9 works and 163k. It focuses on the relationship of a Vulcan OFC (T'Lin) and OMC (Veral) who (in traditional Vulcan fashion) have an arranged marriage though the arrangement ends up being not quite traditional or ideal (*cough Ponn Far cough*), their respective, now joint families and the various relationships therein as well. This is an absolute tour de force of world building/expanding/deepening. It is clear that the author has done their research into 'canon' Vulcan culture but for a casual Trek fan like myself or indeed anyone who doesn't know much about Trek at all, this is just an intriguing exploration of alien cultures (no monoculture here! IDIC also on Vulcan!), customs and ways of life. All the characters are well rounded, the relationship development is realistic, and the plot explores the effect of the bigger events (Dominion War, interplanetary organised crime etc) on domestic and personal lives of individuals. I would honestly read more novels of pretty much any of the characters created here, or like Veral's Vulcan Country Doctor Chronicles. Highly recced comfort read that nonetheless provides great insight into... well, I want to say 'the human condition' despite humans only getting an odd mention.

Forward Momentum by sixbeforelunch (Kathryn Janeway/Tuvok, Star Trek: Voyager) - Same author as above, same high quality. Janeway's pov is excellent and the progression of the relationship is mature and logical but not without passion. I would absolutely read more about their future adventures and new professional positions too.

primped and polished till you glow with pride by VagabondDawn (Fa Mulan/Li Shang, Mulan) - One of my favourite Disney movies! This fic is a canon divergence AU where Mulan's father gets a tactical adviser position in the Imperial City and Mulan and Li Shang end up meeting up through a professional matchmaker. I really liked the different povs and how Mulan's unconventional virtues still end up being exactly the ones that Li Shang is looking for in a wife. Beautiful detail to cultural traditions, warm and hopeful.

Command Space by mariadperiad20 (Amy Santiago/Jake Peralta, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) - WIP warning! However, this is already 83k of delicious, delicious bdsm!AU where Jake is a sub with past trauma he's definitely not dealt with and Amy is his inconveniently amazing domme partner who chugs 'respect subs' juice at every meal. Listen, it's femdom, it's slow burn, it's from friends to lovers (at 83k we are still at the 'why would she want a sub like me' stage and I LOVE IT), it's BDSM!AU which you know I fucking love. There is angst and graphic references to past abuse, including sexual abuse, so mind the warnings, but the world building is great, as is Jake's pov. Absolutely delightful.

A Mountain I'm Willing to Die On by Vera (Judy Hopps/Nick Wilde, Zootopia) - Okay, yes, it's literally furry fic but this is one of my favourite animated movies and they definitely knew what they were doing with this adorable bunny/fox pairing, I have no regrets. There is an unsurprising amount of fic for this fandom/pairing, but as I like things slow burn, this is the one I've liked best. There's a plot of getting interspecies pairings accepted, associated hate crimes, becoming housemates, cultural (species!) differences and falling in love. Charming, interesting, not so subtle social commentary, much enjoyed. Also, it's rated M instead E in case that matters to you given the characters... :D

Heart Like a Socket by Kyra (Jessica Day/Nick Miller, The New Girl) - A marriage of convenience! What if, in season 1, Nick's cancer scare had turned out less well and he was suddenly in need of some way to cover a lot of medical bills. Enter Jess and her excellent insurance cover... for spouses. This has everthing you'd want from the premise: angst, slow-burn, hijinks, meddling friends, happy ending. The voices are spot on for everyone so if you enjoyed the show, you'll enjoy this as well.

spring/summer collection by etben (Stevie Budd/David Rose, Schitt's Creek) - This is pre-Patrick (and my poly heart wants it to be post-Patrick too) and it is smoking hot. David wants to see Stevie in his clothes. Because of her terrible fashion sense, you understand. And no other reason, obviously. This is funny and filthy and the character voices are spot on, the (reluctant) care and fun as explicit as the sex here.

Make me lie (when I don't want to)  by Dishonestdreams (Evelyn "Evie" Carnahan/Jonathan Carnahan, The Mummy) - As always, DD's writing makes me read things I didn't even consider before. Not that I have any kind of high ground or issues with sibling incest in fic, mind, just that this particular pairing didn't occur to me. This is a masterpiece in... it's not even dialogue so much as verbal warfare/diplomacy/game. The tension of 'shouldn't, can't, won't ever again' is delicious.

A Question of Trust by kereia (Sun Bak/Detective Mun, Sense8) - The degree of respect and adoration Mun has for Sun was one of the best things about these two in the series and it shines through beautifully here. A+ characterisation, action, feelings and hot sex, all in just 8k.

Traveling Far by astolat (Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth, Game of Thrones) - Look, I don't even go here. As in, I have neither read the books nor watched the series, I had to create a tag just for this post. But, it's astolat who is one of those writers I take a lot of risks for and, as usual, this one turned out to be well worth the trust. Anyway, needless to say I don't have the foggiest of what's going on but there's a delightful d/s vibe because Jaime is a captive who is starting to have some very inappropriate and explicit thoughts about his captor and the many ways she could just, you know, take him. Then there's a lot of politics and family drama and yet, in the end, he chooses an unconventional found-family-happy-ever-after with her and they end up giving a big Fuck You We Won to rest of the world. Without knowing much of the back story this was an extremely satisfying read, so my guess is that if you actually know what's happening, you'll enjoy it twice as much.

Okay folks, here are my offerings for today's Carpe Diem prompt!

Create: The sixth drabble of the Craig/Bruno silliness, with focus on some blacksmithing skills

Squee: Kukas kissan hännän nostaisi, jossei kissa itse? (Who would lift the cat's tail, if not the cat itself?)

Three things to be proud of

1) Aced that god damn promotion process. Apparently, most people don't get that specific promotion on first try but guess who has two thumbs and did, like a boss? *points at self*

2) Made the decision to go on four day week at work and Saved My Life. Okay, the real test of that is still to come with the academic year kicking in now, but the pilot study findings suggest a positive effect on both mental and physical health.

3) Improvised food! By that I mean, I'm good at looking at a combination of random ingredients and improvising lunches and dinners out of them without specific recipes, and achieving mostly delicious or at least perfectly pleasant results. H often brings various leftovers fruits and veggies in particular and then I cook something out of them for us.

And now some self-recs. I've got over 300 words in over 70 fandoms and they are all my precious children obviously. But have just three recs, one from each of my biggest fandoms. They're not necessarily the best or the most popular, but the ones I have particular fondness for.

Bandom: put another dime in the jukebox, baby - Patrick/Pete, E, 4.3K - Early van days, age reversal. Pete is just shy of eighteen, a cocksure little shit of smudged eyeliner and ill-advised tattoos, fucking everything that moves, utterly bright and shameless and burning, burning, burning like a fire cracker, like a torched orphanage. And Patrick… Patrick is old enough to know better.

Stargate Atlantis: Season For All Things - gen team fic, T, 2.5K - To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1

Supernatural: Give Me Back The Berlin Wall - Sam/Dean, E, 1.3K - evil!Sam. Love is not insanity. It is survival.

Create: Well, my Craig/Bruno drabble for today's prompt is not quite what was requested but it's on the broad theme of relocation...

In thinking about the Squee prompt, I would love to read more stories set in the Harry Potter universe but not in Britain. I'm fascinated about the potential of what the magical world and life would look like in other countries. Fantastic Beasts gave us... Well, New York, which is like not even all of the potential of USA. New Orleans? Alaska? Hawaii? Texas?!?!? (o_O) The book have some terribly stereotypical representations of some European locales (Beauxbatons and Durmstrang...) but I'd love to know what the Wizarding world would be like in the Nordic countries (honestly, just the potential of Finnish mythology and folk beliefs re sauna and forests alone...!), in Greece, or Austria or... To say nothing of the rest of the world! India! Japan! Brazil and the whole of Amazon basin... In fact, how do Indigenous Peoples fit into this world, surely they are the 'purest blood' when it comes to magic? What about Africa and Oceania? Egypt vs Tanzania vs South Africa (how did apartheid impact the wizarding world?). Australia and New Zealand, Aboriginals and Maori vs the colonising European wizards and witches? Give me all this fascinating parallel history and present, the cultural variations across the globe re magic practice, attitudes to non human sentient creatures etc. *grabby hands*

Right, in today's theme of 'Carpe Diem: A Week of Creativity and Squee' my offerings are...

Third instalment of the ridiculous Craig/Bruno drabble sequence, referencing maybe one of my favourite scenes from the series.

For the Squee prompt, a cause I'm passionate about... Okay. Deep breath.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS A CRIME AND WE ARE ALL VICTIMS. GET BIG MAD ABOUT IT.

This year in particular (better late than never I guess) there's been a lot of things in the news about climate change and chances are high that you've encountered at least one article or social media post that tells you what you, as an individual, can do to save the planet you've been destroying. We should all fly less, recycle more, put solar panels on our houses and become vegan. Are you doing your part? Are you feeling guilty yet? Click here to learn how *insert company name* is combating climate change. Listen here as *insert politician name* explains how *insert country name* is world-leading in renewable energy and *sustainable practice wild card* with a straight face while pocketing some coal-dust covered donation money.

And listen, I'm definitely in favour of everyone making sustainable choices in their consumption where they can, absolutely, but the fact of the matter is that climate change is not caused because you left the lights on by accident last night or because I fly to see my family 1-3 times a year and it SURE AS FUCK ISN'T GOING TO BE SOLVED IF WE STOP DOING THOSE THINGS.

What we have here is a classic diversion tactic of shifting the focus and responsibility onto individuals and away from, wait for it... transnational corporations (particularly, especially, principally the fossil fuel industry) and governments, who in collusion have engaged in what amounts to state-corporate crime, structural violence, crime against humanity/ecocide, ecologically induced genocide to throw out some terms, the definitions of which would fit like an oil-slick glove.

But Kat, isn't crime a social construct that has no objective standard or ontological reality? Isn't it just a label that depends on the social, cultural, political and historical context? Correct-a-mundo my friend! It absolutely would be more meaningful to talk about the harmful consequences of actions, rather than their strict legality (especially as vast majority of climate change causing corporate/government action is perfectly legal. Although, maybe not forever, maybe not for too long). In other words, the harm doesn't need to be the intention, and indeed the harm of climate change is not the intention but a by-product of profit-making activities (making it, in some parlance, a crime of capitalism but that's another rant).

However, labelling some acts contributing to climate change/other environmental harm as crimes, whilst not straightforward, draws the necessary attention to the issue of blameworthiness

What do you mean by blameworthiness, Kat? A good fucking question. By that I mean that we need to consider actions in terms of

1) contribution to the problem - In terms of climate change, one might for example point out this analysis of 90 leading oil, gas, coal and cement investor-owned, state-owned and nation state producers which showed that between 1854 and 2010 they were responsible for 63% of cumulative CO2 and methane emissions worldwide. Or this report on the 100 companies responsible for 71% of greenhouse gas emissions (also nice visualisation here)

2) foreknowledge - You know how it's manslaughter if you kill someone by reckless driving but murder if you aim your car at them on purpose and fucking floor it? Well, the fossil fuel industry has demonstrably known about the effects of its activities for over sixty years and its campaign to deceive and obfuscate the issue of climate change by persuading the public that science was conflicting or outright wrong and denying human responsibility is organised, deliberate, well-funded and ongoing, utilizing many of the public relations strategies tried and tested by the Big Tobacco (Smoke and Fumes is an excellent website with primary sources uploaded and I would also recommend these to two reports from the Union of Concerned Scientists: 2007; 2014)

Big mad? Things to do:
  • Get knowledged up my good folk. I've tried to pick open access articles/links for above but if there's something you want to read but can't or you want more academic sources (including an encyclopedia entry I wrote on this very fucking thing) pm me, open access is a right. Would also recommend DeSmog
  • Call TNCs and governments out on social media, i.e. DRAG THEM and elsewhere when the opportunity arises (I once made a loud and public observation about Shell's human rights record in a middle of a high street in front of their stand)
  • Take them to court! Or, more realistically, support campaigns for legal action. There's been some recent success with that (e.g. Shell is not having a good year  at all - couldn't happen to a nicer company) - also, worth keeping an eye on how the campaign to add ecocide (back! it was originally there) to the Rome Statute / give it other legal standing is going. Check both international (e.g. Green Peace) or local environmental campaigns and organisations regarding this
  • Hit them where it hurts, i.e. money and reputation. The campaigns to deinvest from fossil fuels are growing and this year, after the lurid front page images of the world literally on fire, even the more staunchly neoliberal financial organisations are getting antsy about their public image. Again, check what's happening locally (start e.g. here and for UK and if you want something to get angry about re Johnson's government, google thee 'Cambo oil field'). If you happen to work for an organisation that has an investment portfolio, why not start asking awkward questions about how ethical that portfolio is.

Right. I think that's enough ranting for today...

I've done a thing! Two things! Well, two complete things and one half complete thing. I'm just going to briefly post the complete things for now, then go to sleep, and hope my brain gives me a final scene for the wip ficlet over night.

For today's Carpe Diem challenge I have...

Created: A first instalment of a Craig/Bruno drabble sequence (no regrets, Craig and Bruno's Great British Road Trips was basically fandom trope wonderland) - I'll post the complete thing on DW too but for this week all instalments will be on AO3 only (literally no one except [personal profile] pushkin666 cares about this pairing and that's fine with me)

And now the Squee! Wasn't sure what to post here, but since [personal profile] deerna used a painting, I thought I would too. This is Charles Mengin's Sappho (1877). It's currently housed at the Manchester Art Gallery and it is one of my favourite paintings of all time. I go visit her every time I'm in Manchester and I have recently dropped a lot of money for a A1 print of the painting to put on my very own wall. I love how unapologetically pissed off she looks. Tits out and glaring, what a queen.
