Bandom
A little sincerity is a dangerous thing - Gerard/Mikey. Angsty schmoopy waycest written for me! This is a lovely fic, mapping the slow shift in the brothers' relationship from realisation to acceptance.
And the Painted Ponies - Frank/Mikey, AU. A thoroughly enjoyable AU where Mikey is a fashion model and Frank is the unlikely (but deadly!) bodyguard assigned to protect him. The concept works well and doesn't even require much of a stretch of imagination to see how things could have gone this way. Mikey in this is particularly great, but all characters are used well. The romance made me tingle happily and there's enough drama and action to keep things interesting.
Everyone Comes To Pan’s - Frank/Gerard, Mikey/Ray, AU. A delightful AU that plays well with the faerie mythology and weaves some interesting magic as Frank discovers that he's not quite what he thought he was... There is also a sequel
Pan Goes A Courting (Patrick/Pete) that is much more tongue-in-cheek and meta-laden, but very cute.
Merry We Are - Alex/Ryland, AU. A troubadour AU, and a long one, with one of my favourite but sadly very rare pairings! Oh the rejoicing! This is a lovely tale of magic and music, just wonderful.
wherever i'm with you - Ryan Luciani/Nick Scimeca, other background pairings. If the pairing makes you go 'who??' don't worry about it. This is perfectly accessible to read as an original fic as it is essentially a story about a group of friends, two of whom take some time to sort their shit out. Painful and realistic look at unrequited love (which then turns out to be all requited because c'mon, you know I love happy endings). Don't think the writing style - loose, meandering, almost stream-of-consciousness - is for everyone, but it is one I really enjoy even though I lost the plot (such as it is) at times. Very enjoyable read.
Doctor Who
Seventeen Things That Happen to Rory Williams, After - Eleventh Doctor/Rory. Author's summary works well:
"In which Amy dies and Rory, eventually, keeps going." This is heart-breaking and heart-warming in equal measure, a great story that encapsulates the quirky humour of the show as well as its darkness and ever-present hope.
Robin Hood (BBC)
but surely, sheriff, don’t you see; that you can’t take the sky from me? - Gen(ish), Firefly fusion! Oh gosh, such nostalgia for the glory days of Robin Hood fandom *thinks wistfully of tree!porn* Anyway! This was a wonderful, seamless fusion of the two worlds. Readers familiar with both canons will get the most out of this as there are a lot of subtle little nods that filled me with delight.
Sherlock
At Least There's Football - Lestrade/Mycroft, background John/Sherlock. If you are eyeing the main pairing with askance... then stop, and give this fic a chance, I guarantee you won't regret it. This is long, like 'prepare to lose a week' long, and utterly, utterly brilliant. Told from Greg's pov, the fic maps the relationship development slowly, taking time to fully flesh out both main characters, as well as create some wonderful original ones. Greg's family, particularly his two nieces, come to life so vividly I am left wanting to read books and books about them too, not to mention Anthea. Engrossing, un-put-downable storytelling that sweeps you along. I cannot rec this enough.
Star Trek (Reboot)
One Time Spock Walked In On Bones and Kirk Having Sex, and Five Times He Didn’t - Kirk/McCoy, Spock/Uhura. In turns hilarious and heart-breaking, this is essentially a lovely exploration of friendship.
Top Gun
Kings of the Air - Iceman/Maverick. Oh c'mon, like you haven't thought about it, Top Gun being the gayest not-actually-a-gay-porno movie there is. This fic, however, manages something that the movie itself never did; it makes these characters real and gives them actual depth. It's a brilliant, hot, and unexpectedly meaningful story with some great commentary on the (now thankfully obsolete) American military rules.
