Drabble Fest 3/12 – for [livejournal.com profile] acetamide. Fandom and pairing/characters as requested.

Moirai – Robin Hood – Gen or implied Much/Robin – PG

Prompt: History

They bury him between Sherwood and Locksley, where the forest gentles into the meadow and white flowers dance in the breeze like maidens at spring.

The earth is warm from the sun and easy to dig up, heavy to throw back in.

Everyone who’s left to cry, cries.

“Come now,” Tuck says, his arm around Kate’s shoulders. “Robin wouldn’t want this.”

He’s right, of course he is, but Much doesn’t really give a damn. There are many things Robin never wanted, most of which happened anyway. Much knows that better than anyone.

He glances at the others, standing tall and brave around the unmarked grave. Despite everything, they still think today was a victory.

Already they are forgetting him, Much can see that.  Oh they’ll remember Robin Hood, the hero of Nottingham – he thinks people always will. But only Much will remember Robin.

And perhaps that is for the best.

Oh, Much! *heart breaks* Beautifully written, and so sad and poignant. The penultimate paragraph slays me. Perfect!

*offers plaster for your heart*

Thank you for your comment, and with the quoting... *blushes* I delayed watching the finale for a long time and then finally this drabble prompt forced my hand. And then this demanded to be written because it's true what they say; you don't cry for those who die, you cry for those who are left behind.

Yeah, exactly this! I remember when I was watching the finale, I was ok with Robin dying, I even was ok with Guy dying, but when they showed Much's reaction to Robin's death, I started bawling like a baby. :/

Oh exactly the same for me. When Robin says goodbye to Much is when I started crying. His little broken faaaaaaaaace... ;_;

That was lovely. Beautiful opening lines -- vivid and evocative without being too flowery. And of course I love this (and I'm not even a Robin fan):

Oh they’ll remember Robin Hood, the hero of Nottingham – he thinks people always will. But only Much will remember Robin.

Waaaah. I am a Much fan, so, poor poor Much. :-/

Oh, thank you so much, what a lovely compliment to receive. And the quoting makes me shuffle my feet and blush...

Is there actually anyone in the entire fandom who is a Robin fan? I haven't met one yet... Whereas Much has set camp in many a fangirl heart.

I'm a Guy fan myself.

Allan! *hugs* Guy, Allan, and Marian are my favorite troublemaker "team." And Much is just so squishable.

HEY! I resemble that remark!! Actually... robinhoodfanatic was just too darn long a name, so I just made it [livejournal.com profile] robinfanatic.

However, I do like Robin even though I hate him, too, 'cos he never did truly [livejournal.com profile] treatmuchright. And Much is my hero! :)

Thank you very much. Writing this sort of gave me better closure than the show... Yeah, I too lost it with Much. Sam Troughton really knows how to wring the viewer's emotions.

This is so sad and lovely. Poor Much, I think sometimes he is the only one who sees Robin as a person. I really enjoyed reading this, thank you!

Also, love the title :)

I think sometimes he is the only one who sees Robin as a person. - a thousand times yes! This is exactly what I wanted to convey; for everyone else Robin was important for what he represented, but for Much he was important simply for being Robin, flaws and all.

And thank you so much for your comment and especially for mentioning the title. I'm really particular (read: anal) about my titles, they have to be meaningful and pretty and exactly so... :D

Why, out of this whole beautiful piece, does this line make me want to cry the most? It's just so lovely.

Poor Much. And he's right, too. *sniff*

*blushes* I'm always so pleased and flattered when people quote a line back at me. It's lovely to see what has touched someone. There were two things I wanted to convey with that line: How Robin was caught between the two worlds and thus it was fitting to bury him there. And for sentimental reasons I wanted to echo the scene from the first episode where Robin and Much reach the meadow with its flowers; ending it there were it all began mean, closing the circle.

Thank you so much for your comment, really means a lot when people take the time to read and leave feedback.

And it's lovely to BE touched by such a great read!

I wanted to echo the scene from the first episode

Yes! This is exactly what I was picturing but couldn't quite place! Amazing idea. They should have ended the series like that. It would have provided closure.

I would quote a line back at you but that's already been done quite a bit on this one and i know how you get when that happens :D

Even though this is not a particularly favourite fandom of mine (despite coming from Nottingham as you know), I like what you've done with this. It's so very true that Much thinks they are already forgetting the real person and the legend, that had already been started, is gaining momentum.

Angsty and I want to squish Much.

Posted by [identity profile] kat-lair.livejournal.com
Heh yeah, there has been an uncanny amount of quoting for a 150 word fic so I'm already quite, um, squirmy... ;D

Well for RH fandom was always better than the show, at least after the first season.

Thank you very much hun, that's what I wanted to convey. I think in the end even Robin was too preoccupied by being what everyone else needed him to be and he forgot how to be just a man.

Much needs pie.

Well I was always more of a fan of Guy and the Sheriff than the 'good guys'.

And Much totally needs cherry pie :d

Oh - this was lovely - but I'm really torn by it...

Of course Much had a very special relationship with Robin that no-one else had but:
only Much will remember Robin.

I have to speak up for my boy and say I think you're being a little unfair to John there and also (*ducks*) maybe Kate as well?

Beautifully written though... I'd like to echo others comments on that first line and also on the amazing job Sam Troughton did with that scene. Heart-breaking.

I have to speak up for my boy and say I think you're being a little unfair to John there and also (*ducks*) maybe Kate as well? - You have a point. But for me it seemed that for all others, Robin Hood, the legend and the hero, is already replacing the image of the imperfect though essentially good man they actually knew, lived and argued with, etc. I just feel that therein lies the tragedy (blessing?) of many a hero, that people whill remember what they did, but not so much who they were.

Just my interpretation though, and I see your point too.

And finally, thank you for reading and commenting. I'm really pleased you and others have enjoyed this drabble. And indeed it is lovely to squee with people about Sam's talents... :D

Agh... that means Tuck really got to them, and that's a depressing thought just because I got so tired of hearing him spout off in series 3.

I'll agree with [livejournal.com profile] wastingyourgum that at least John & Kate might remember Robin the man.

And this line Despite everything, they still think today was a victory really makes me choke up. Poor Much.

I will join you in squeeing about Sam's fabulous talent to deliver lines and expressions that make you want to laugh or cry. He is a superb actor!

It's really great to see people discussing things that came up in the fic, even and especially if their take on things is different to mine! I'm just really psyched that it has generated all this awesome discussion, you know.

Yes, I think Tuck did manage to get to them to a degree. There was a lot that I liked about his character but he was rather fanatic about the 'greater good'...

Thank you for the feedback. And the quoting! That makes me squirm with pleasure...
