1. Me when I watch reacters on YT: some of you have grown up by never watching any media not in your native language that has subtitles and it shows. Okay, listen, I know there are a whole variety of reasons why people struggle with subtitles but English language privilege is a thing and if I got a pound every time a reacter went 'omg it's so haaaaaaaaaard to read the subtitles and also follow the mv' I would by now have paid at least half of my monthly energy bill.

2. I have written 30k of fic this year. Please witness.

3. Is anyone interested in betaing 6k of femmeslash? I finally finished the Hustlers (2019 film) post-canon Destiny/Ramona fic. It's barely a T and mostly just them gettinng back together. And then getting together. Mostly I just want a spag check but if you've watched the movie then awesome. If you haven't you should, but you could also watch this awesome fanvid by [personal profile] sisabet. AO3 link here for comments.

Final answer to the Kinky Fuckbuddy, Vanilla Fuckbuddy, One Night Stand meme.[personal profile] dreamsofspike gave me Tenth Doctor, Crowley (Good Omens) and Crowley (Supernatural), a very clever linking indeed (especially as Mark Sheppard was also in Doctor Who... small circles!)

One Night Stand: Crowley (Supernatural)

Hot? Yes. Funny? Very. Would disembowel me without a second thought just because he felt like it? Absolutely. Out of all of these, he's the one most likely to murder you for funsies (I mean, Ten will do it if your death serves the greater good according to him and GO Crowley would only do it if you were stupid enough to threaten his angel) so all things considered, would prefer the äwham, bam, thank you m'am' night with him.

Vanilla Fuckbuddy: Tenth Doctor

Last time I did this meme, I had Ten as my Kinky Fuckbuddy. My thoughts on it being like playing wtih a very sharp knife are still valid so I wavered here, but I think this time (and with the below option) I would go with Vanilla Fuckbuddy, because (maybe because I'm older?) I actually find Ten quite deeply terrifying... And as such, I'd be reluctant to go poking around with anything that would open up his psyche too much... Let's just keep it nice and casual, fund and light with mutual orgasms and then go on our separate ways. Of course, I'm not at all convinced he's capable of that, and there is a high risk of opening your door and finding a rain-soaked version of him full of Dramatic Post-Apocalypse Feelings. He projects, he imprints, he burns planets for you... Do you really want to bring in additional excitement to that?

On that note, everyone has seen this vid right? The one that called Ten's unhinging before Waters of Mars even aired. The one that shows exactly why this version was fucking terrifying...

(Dowload here)

Kinky Fuckbuddy: Crowley (Good Omens)

Yes, I know I had him as Vanilla Fuckbuddy in a previous post of this meme BUT look at my options! By 'kinky' I totally mean taking everything I said there (praise, opportunities for service, sensory play) to the softest extreme. Have him kneel in front of you and see how long he could take hearing all the ways in which he is good and beautiful and helpful and perfect and deserving etc before he cried. I'm guessing no longer than an hour.

It's been A Week (and yes, I know it's only Wednesday) so some delicious fandom things that cheer me up.

Namely, my awesome Guardian 520 Day Reverse Exchange haul.

Kind of fell into this fandom by accident, and decided to do the exchange because it had a 300 word minimum and that sounded like a fun, hassle free way to dip my toe in... Well. Haha. Should've known better. Obviously ended up writing over 16k of most self-indulgent gift fic ever, because [personal profile] yantantether's prompt just allowed me to pour all my feelings and some porn into a thin 'undercover at a bdsm club' plot. Result. Also was super blown away by the reaction, felt like the old LJ days when one actually used to get comments on one's fic :D

Anyway, rambling. The point of this was to pimp stuff that I got! The way you did the challenge was to pick three anonymous offers and provide prompts/requests for them, but you didn't know which one you'd be assigned to. One of the offers I picked was a vid one and I asked for a BAMF/dark Shen Wei vid and provided some song prompts. When the reveals went up I basically lost. all. my. cool. I mostly just keysmashed and howled incoherently at them. [personal profile] lola had recently done an absolutely studding and heart-wrenching Guardian vid Fear of the Water which I had forced on everyone who sat still long enough, and now? Now she had made me this, the most perfect BAMF/dark Shen Wei using a mash-up of one of the songs I suggested nonetheless.

It is dark and sharp and hot as a freshly forged blade. Please watch Bury A Crown below and then leave feedback to the vidder here.

I also got an unexpected gift of art! The lovely HanHathma did this absolutely gorgeous art of the final scene of The Black Lotus Club. I mean... Look at them! Their positions, Shen Wei's hair, his hand on Zhao Yunlan's face, Zhao Yunlan's little belly rolls <3 the tenderness is tangible, everything I imagined and more. Please leave love to the artist here.

Grimm Recs!

kat_lair: (GRIMM - cometh the wolf)
***

Because I just bitched and whined about lack of quality stuff, I thought it would be only fair to showcase the numerous exceptions. Turned out there were quite a few fics worth a read though so there will be a second rec post for those in a few days. :D

All recs are Nick/Monroe. Because that's the way I rock atm.

***

FICS

Food of Love by mrsvc - Food is love. End of story. People feeding people out of love is like one of favourite fic and RL things. Lovely.

Freak Out by brbsoulnomming - Monroe's wolf side does not freak Nick out. Quite the contrary. Oddly sweet in its way, liked it a lot.

Kiss With a Fist by ?? (orphaned work) - Fight sex. With rimming. Whilst Monroe is not fully human anymore. Enough said. Except for GUHHH

Monroe's Fairytale Halfway House by mrsvc - Ahhhh I love 'families of choice' tropes and Grimm is full of troubled teenagers that could use a Grimm and a Blutbad as big brothers. Lovely, heart-warming, feel good read.

Nimble Tongue by laetificare - Nick is cursed to lie. It all spirals out from that. Really interesting premise, and nothing about this fic (not the case resolution, nor the relationship changes) comes easy

Not Helping! by LadyNyxRavus - Nick waves the red flag. With predictable consequences. I do rather enjoy this trope and this is one of the better executions of it :D

The Grimm of Portland by ?? (orphaned work) - A good case fic with additional mind control feature. The way in which Monroe gets around the compulsion to obey a particular order is... well, you'll see. Ouch.

The Wolves in Waiting by jibrailis - Nick has all the keys to Monroe's house, and his life. The writing is fantastic and I love how the author trusts the reader to get it and doesn't spell things out. Understated and lovely. Highly recced.

You be Rose and I'll be Jack by ?? (orphaned work) - It's canon that Nick is good at drawing. Turns out he has quite a preference for one particular model. A'wwwwww.

(We're Looking For) Something Dumb to Do by mrsvc - 'Woke Up Wesen Married' trope is sadly entirely underused, more of this I say! This is funny and romantic with good characterisation and Rosalee being awesome too.

VIDS

A Blutbad's Gotta Howl by TheSylverLining - A too short vidlet that vidder calls 'lulzy' and I call ajkldsjgksfjssakhsdjfk guh. Thissssssssss is what I'm talking about re Nick trying Monroe's control. I have watched it about five times already.

Clear Night in June by madtodream - Oh man, I couldn't decide whether to laugh or clutch my heart from the ~feelings~ It's Nick/Monroe set to an Eminem song and it shouldn't work but somehow it still does.

Secrets by DeWinter79 - N'awwwwww woobie!Monroe, giving all his secrets away. Ahhhhh (b)romance.

kat_lair: (SHERLOCK - sherlock)
This is the final day of vid recs for now, hope you've enjoyed them :)

***

Boom Boom Ba - Xena: Warrior Princess, Gabrielle/Xena. This is an older vid and one of my favourite Xena vids of all time. One of my favourite femslash vids too. It's sensual and seductive and just really damn sexy. There is such fluidity and burn to this. Reserve a cooling drink for viewing.

Cat's in the Cradle - House, Sherlock, Fortysomething. So, in Fortysomething  Benedict Cumberbatch played Hugh Laurie's son. Hugh Laurie then went on to play House, character based on Sherlock Holmes and  Benedict Cumberbatch of course went on to play Sherlock himself. The vidder has taken this connection and ran with it, creating a brilliant constructed reality vid where Sherlock is in fact House's son... The parallels are striking and the concept totally believable. I'm only waiting someone to write this fic now... Amazing vid.

Coin Operated Boy - Supernatural, meta. If you enjoy your meta clever and cutting, this is definitely for you. Highly ambitious vid in three parts that uses not just canon source, but also fandom works and a hired actress to the boot. Justifiably recced and awarded all over the damn place. Check it out now if you already haven't.

gonna be alright - Stargate Atlantis, John/Ronon. Mmm these boys sure like it rough. Guns and violence and oh my. A great vid that parallels John and Ronon and show their relationship in all its rough-edged, deep-seated, unspoken glory. Loved it.

Handlebars - Thor, Loki. This is fast becoming one of the most vidded songs in fandom, but it certainly suits Loki. The vid does a good job portraying his escalating megalomania and inevitable tragedy.

Hook Shot - Multi. Women kicking ass. That's pretty much it but it's more than enough: fast and hard-hitting, this is a great action vid.

Hurt - Sherlock, John/Sherlock. This delivers what the title promises. Sherlock will make you hurt. But maybe it's worth it. Angsty and heart-achy and gorgeous.

It's a Long Way Down - Supernatural. This video explores the theme of water as it is used in the show, as a saviour and an enemy. Creepy and effective, works beautifully as a black-and-white vid.

Little Lion Man - Harry Potter, Ron (Hermione/Ron). Oh Ron, you brave gorgeous boy man. This is a wonderful and insightful character study that really gets to the heart of Ron's character, both his strengths and insecurities, especially when it comes to Hermione. Great vid, great song choice too.

Marchin On - Star Trek Reboot, ensemble. Ah uplifting, USS Enterprise is full of BAMFs and they just keep marchin on, hell yeah! When is the next movie out again? This makes me yearn for more epic Trek adventures.

thistle & weeds - Lost, Jack/Sawyer. Aww man, back when I watched Lost this was totally my slash pairing of choice. The vid does a good job at capturing how Jack and Sawyer constantly fail to fully connect and understand each other due to neither of them being willing to show all their cards. They almost get there so many times and then it falls apart again; a tragedy of their own making. Lovely bittersweet vid.

kat_lair: (H50 - side by side)

Black Dove (January) - Doctor Who, River. River Song was a January girl. Gorgeous character study vid, portraying River's strength and fragility.

Blue - Hot Fuzz. Ladies and Gents, Nicholas Cage is on the job! Hee, this is such a fun, fast-paced vid that does a perfect job and capturing the film. If you're trying to convince anyone of the awesomeness of Hot Fuzz, this makes an excellent recruiter vid!

Bye Bye Miss American Pie - Supernatural. Epic, both in length (8.5mins!) and scope. This vid maps the whole saga of Winchesters and associated friends and enemies. It has such a 'bigger than life' feel and yet at the same time it is completely immersed in it; the small moments that define the story.

Hawaii Five-0: The Movie - Hawaii Five-0. Dude, I love the 'fake movie trailer' genre of fanvids, and this one is excellent. There is a real sense of momentum and escalating tension. Watch out for damn good matching of those hard beats and clips.

My life would suck without you - Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve. Ahhhhhh all the feel goods and happy grins. This is just an uncomplicatedly happy and cheery otp vid. Highly enjoyable!

My Name Is Tristan - X-Men: First Class, Erik. The song choice is first class (pun unintended) and the vid uses it effectively to capture the tragedy and violence of Erik's life and character. Powerful.

This Is Everything - Star Trek all series. This is a tribute, in vidder's words, 'to all the queer Star Trek romances that never were' and it is both hopeful and sad. We've been waiting for the series to boldly go and move on from subtext and minor characters and almost-but-not-reallys but so far it hasn't. Lovely vid, and it makes me both love Trek more and a little less.

Tonight I'm Fucking You - X-Men: First Class, Charles/Erik. Please excuse Erik Lehnsher, he doesn't mean to be rude. It's just that... tonight? He's fucking you. Oh uhm ahaha oh god. This vid, I'm sure, means to be just as rude and suggestive and hot and dirty as it is. And damn but it works well.

Turn To Stone - Multi, scifi. Haunting tribute to science-fiction that focuses on death and loss. Beautifully realised, with a certain coldness to it that fits the subject matter perfectly.

You Told the Drunks I Knew Karate - Doctor Who, Amy/Rory. Rory Williams! Being awesome and brave. The song is brilliant and the vid makes full use of it. This will leave you grinning.

kat_lair: (WHO - rory)
More vid recs for youuuuuuu! <3

Blue Caravan - Doctor Who, Amy/Doctor, Amy/Rory. Oh this one hurts in the best of ways, A gorgeous look at Amy and Amy's boys. The vid has a lovely unhurried pace with a kind of sinister undertone that creeps up on you. Beautiful.

Bye Bye Bye - The Social Network, Eduardo/Mark. Lol the song choice is highly appropriate and makes the vid both angsty and kind of hilarious. The editing is sharp and takes full advantage of the distnictive beat of the music.

Happy Now - Life on Mars (UK), Sam character study (with some Annie/Sam and Gene/Sam elements). A great synthesis of lyrics and clips, showing Sam's slide deeper into madness... or is it happiness? The vid does an excellent job at showing the thin line between the two.

Hindsight - Glee, Kurt/Blaine. This is a 35sec vidlet that completely captures the relationship between the boys. Great attention to detail and the heartbeat like bass track lends a breathless feeling of anticipation to this. Gorgeous, amazing editing.

Man on Lockdown - Merlin, Arthur character study. A powerful and sobering take on Arthur's character, focusing on his unwillingness to rebel in action the way he does in his heart. Will make you look at the show from a different, more critical angle; painful and challenging.

Marchin On - Harry Potter, ensemble. One of the best HP vids I've seen, perfectly captures what was always the best part about the series: friendship and love that endures and grows. Vid uses footage from all the films, showing the evolution of relationships. The focus is on the trip but the vid also lets the minor characters shine. Uplifting and epic in the true meaning of the word.

Take My Hand (Take My Whole Life Too) - Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Oh jesus christ, this is one of those vids where you start with 'aww lol the song' and 30 seconds later you're bawling your eyes out because 'oh god the songggggg and and johnandsherlockohmyheartttttttt'. Firstly, the song (Ingrid Michaelson's cover of 'Can't Help Falling In Love') is so unexpectedly heart-breaking in the context of this fandom that it works perfectly. Secondly, the vid makes wonderful use of colour (full, black and white, over-saturated, tinted...), overlaying of images and gaze (oh man the long glances are killing me). Gorgeous vid.

The Colonel - Stargate Atlantis, McKay & Sheppard. This is a great video looking at the relationship between the two men from and angle I haven't seen explored before in vid format: the reluctant almost unconscious hero worship that grows into a deep friendship. Great use of footage to tell a story, including a lot of rarer clips.

Something In The Wind - Merlin, unrequited Morgana/Arthur, Merlin/Arthur. An older Merlin vid, using only season 1 footage, this makes me actually buy and almost root for Morgana/Arthur. A beautiful and painful vid, which will strike a chord with anyone who's ever been in Morgana's position.

Your Biggest Fan - Supernatural, Sam/Dean (note that to d/l the vid you need to sign-up for 4shared but it's free and worth the few clicks). Oh goodness, this feels like one of those old school wincest vids about the epic love and devotion between the brothers that require everyone viewing to exclaim 'oh Dean!' every few seconds. Dean's endless propensity to sacrifice himself for his brother makes for some delicious angsty viewing. The overlaying of young Winchester with their older counterparts is done for the maximum effect and there's a real feeling of continuity here. The ending packs a punch as well, because... of course Sam would do the same.

Greetings!

My beloved Finngirls are meeting this weekend but due to being in the wrong country at the wrong time I cannot physically be there for fangirl shenanigans *sadface* One of the traditions of the fanmeets has always been watching fanvids together, so I thought I would contribute to the cause by timing my planned vid rec posts accordingly. Kat Recs All The Vids - Day 1

Disarm - Harry Potter, Draco character study (Draco/Harry). This is a gorgeous character study vid that draws some striking parallels between Draco and Harry, particularly in the context of family ties. There is something almost fragile about this vid, and the editing makes excellent use of symbolism.

High Voltage - Stargate (all shows), Ancients. Wow. I mean, wow, you always kind of knew that the Ancients weren't the benevolent gods they liked to play but this vid manages to condense just how scary and power-crazy they actually were. Great use of clips form all three Stargate series and the song choice does an excellent job at conveying the relentless drive for more, everything, now that the Ancients have.

If It Be Your Will - Lewis, Hathaway character study. In the interest of full disclosure I'll confess that this vid was made for me, from my prompt and song choice. However. However, it is about a hundred times more awesome than anything I pictured in my tiny head. Couple Leonard Cohen with Hathaway's struggle with his faith and you're left with something that hurts in all the best ways. The use of gaze and the matching of clips and lyrics is amazing, and the ending is the only possible ending a vid like this could have had.

Matches to Paper Dolls - The X Files, Scully/Mulder. Dana Scully, my hero. This is a wonderful character portrait, capturing Scully's strength and persistence as well as her relationship with Mulder, which was as destructive as it was powerful. The vid uses some unusual clips and that match between those and the lyrics is layered enough to surprise me even after several viewings.

Rolling in the Deep - X-Men Movie Series, Charles/Erik. When 'First Class' came out, everyone was all over this pairing. And yet, for me, it was the stellar (and sadly underused) performances of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen that really portrayed the painful and complicated relationship between them. This vid does an excellent job at showing the continuity and development of the two complex individuals and their relationship. Some excellent use of overlaying of images.

Take Me Home - Multi, femslash. Awesome ladies being awesome together. This is a great look at some of most intense female relationships on tv, with a nice dose of antagonism as well. The song choice gives me severe nostalgia.

The Glass - Multi, meta. I've seen this recced far and wide and deservedly so. This uses a powerful and beautifully carried visual metaphor of queer subtext, its representation in the media and how fandom breaks through it. This is some truly moving stuff right here. I was fine until it got to the Primeval clip (you'll know what I mean) and then I almost started bawling.

There! Right There! - X-Men: First Class, Charles/Erik. The most burning question at the X-Men mansion is whether Erik is gay or just... European? Oh godddddd, the crack is priceless, the song choice (from Legally Blonde the musical) exquisite, and the resulting hilarity may cause peeing in pants.

Tonight - McFly, Dougie/Harry. Right, firstly, you do not need to be in the fandom, know anything about the band or even like their music to enjoy this vid. Secondly, if you are even a little bit interested in watching power dynamics in action then run, don't walk, to watch this right now. The d/s vibe in this is amazing, all the wall pushing and restraining and bossing around... This is one of the best and sexiest rps vids I've seen, with great editing and song choice.

We Go Together - Multi, watersports! Yes, you read that right. This is a vid about watersports (and no, I'm not talking about surfing or sailing here...) and 'lo it is awesome and hilarious and even almost a little sexy at times. The sources are fantastic and the song choice too. Plus, dolphins! *cackles*

kat_lair: (LEWIS - sir)

I know I promised more fic rec posts, but 2-5 min fanvids are the extent of my non-thesis attention span right now. Plus there are some real gems here that I can't bear to deprive you of any more.

Vid Recs!

Alone With You (the shared madness) - Bandom, Patrick/Pete. Oh goddddddddd. Remember back in the day when Patrick/Pete was the pairing in the bandom? Remember all the angsty fic where Pere was a mess and Patrick was... the anchor and the leaking liferaft or maybe nothing but a phantom on Pete's fucked-up psyche? Yeah, you remember that? Well, this is all that in a 3-minute video. Set to a song by Brand New (I know for a fact that this is a selling point to at least one of you). What the fuck are you still doing here and not watching this vid?

Strange Days - Being Human, ensemble (canon pairings). I know I ramble about song choices a lot, but these are my recs so I can. This is song I used in a Wincest fanmix eons ago, and a long-time favourite of mine and so perfect for this. Oh show. This is a gorgeous, bittersweet vid with a wonderful use of the supporting characters. Definite tissue-warning for this.

Distance - Glee, Finn/Kurt (could be friendship). Okay, if anyone was going to sell this pairing to me it would be Fabella. The song is one I always associate with one of my favourite Ianto/Jack vids, but damn it's poignant here too. The hazy overlay (idk, there's probably a technical vidder term for it) lends this perfect dreamy quality. Use of colour (and lack of it), the subtle effects... but beyond that, the emotional impact is immense. This vid makes the point the show laboured at, and makes it far better.

White Blank Page (d/l link amidst the comments, ask the vidder) - Glee, Brittany/Santana. Okay so I thought the show itself twisted the knife in my heart with the storyline of these two. But that was like a pin prick compared to the this. Jesus Christ. If you do not choke up from watching you have no soul and I don't think we can hang out any longer. The bleached colours, the overlaid clips, the clear storytelling, the editing that brings to focus the frankly excellent acting... I don't care if you hate Glee, this is beautiful, go watch it now.

Cupid's Chokehold
- Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve. Man, I love it when fandoms collide. Here Steve and Danny's meet-cute to the infectious tune of that Gym Class Heroes song you can't get out of your head for five hours after listening (mmm Travie and Patrick). Anyway. This is Nel's vid so quality is guaranteed. This is sweet and light-hearted, perfect antidote for all the angst. (Smile moar, Danny! *gazes*)

Harbors of Our Own - Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve. Ah, oldie but goodie (...does a fandom this new even have 'oldies' yet?) Anyway, possibly everyone has seen this already but since I haven't recced it yet... Basically, this is a vid about how inconvenient love can be. It won't ask for permission or schedules or whether or not you'd prefer your working hours explosion free or your pizza without fruit. Such is love. Danny is learning it the hard way. Lovely vid with strong storytelling.

Trouble - Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve. . :DDD Pink is one the very few celebrity women I wouldn't mind a little personal playtime with. Um, that wasn't relevant to the vid per se, was it? Anyway. Steve is trouble. Danny pretends to mind. Awesome action vid, uncomplicated fun. Everyone needs some of that.

Ego - Merlin, Arthur/Merlin. Aaaaahahahahaaaahahahaha. Merlin is Beyoncé. Of course he is. It makes perfect sense. Anyway, so okay, here's the thing, Merlin has a big sword cock ego. And he can back it up. And then some. A vid full of phallic symbolism (just like the show!) and a dramatic slash dragon (also, like the show!). You owe yourself to watch this.

Animal (youtube, no d/l link that I could find) - Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Okay, I admit it: I clicked on this vid because I had some hazy hope it was made to NIN's Closer (...seriously, where is the Sherlock vid to that? I need it in my life.) It wasn't. But it was a sill an awesome little lovestory of a vid. There's something oddly romantic and kind of... soft? about this vid that appeals to me. The colouring is gorgeous.

Sherlock: The Musical - Sherlock, some implied John/Sherlock and Moriarty/Sherlock scenes. Okay, so this does what it says in the tin; a medley of songs and clips. This is hilarious, often in a slightly wrong way. Ahahaha, the Mycroft part is maybe my favourite. No, John's theme song. No, everything about Moriarty (Lady Gaga! perfect!). No, maybe... You get the idea.

Sherlock Audio Fun - Sherlock, some implied John/Sherloc, Moriarty/Sherlock, Anderson/Sherlock (no, really) and Sherlock/Mrs. Hudson (ahaha, genius) scenes. So this is done in the same vein as above (medley of songs) but also uses a variety of dialogue clips from other sources. Also moar musicals (Sherlock = Belle, trufax). And Glee (Sherlock does not want to go to rehab!) This vid actually makes me kind of buy both Anderson/Sherlock and Moriarty/Sherlock and even find them, sort of, um hot? My favourite is probably still John asking Sherlock not to turn him on...

Sherlock'd In His Pants - Sherlock, John/Sherlock. So you know the Supernatural vid to this song, right? Right?! Good, so you know what to expect. Ahahaha, what wonders clever editing can do. Many, many hilarious lyric-clip combos, will possibly ruin (improve?) Sherlock's latex gloves for you forever but totally worth it. *dries tears of mirth*

I Wanna Do Bad Things With You (youtube, no d/l link that I could find) - Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Nghgkldsguhhh. Um yeah, it is indeed set to the John Everett song made famous by True Blood and damn but it fits well. I loved the darker edge of this and how predatory Sherlock is portrayed as. Good use of dialogue, which can be a hit and miss, but works well here.

Brokeback Baker Street
(youtube, no d/l link that I could find) - Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Ahahaha, so I am a sucker for these reimaginings. By the same vidder as above, this is Sherlock done like the Brokeback Mountain trailer and I am unashamedly emotional over it. C'mon, who wouldn't watch this movie?

Lucky Ones (vidder's LJ is flocked and I've no idea if there is a d/l link somewhere) - Star Wars Prequels (with a couple clips from the Original Trilogy), Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon. Fine, fine, so I've been on Obi/Qui fic binge over the last two weeks, what of it? It's the power difference thing. Think about it, the whole Jedi order is only one sideways step away from institutionalised bdsm what with all the Masters and training bonds and suggestive weaponry, what was George Lucas thinking?. I cannot resist that shit even when the ratio of purple prose, soul bonds, and release of sexual energy into the ~Living Force~ is alarmingly high. I also cannot resist watching and rewatching this vid and maybe having some serious heartache because of the EPIC AND TRAGIC LOVE. This is not fandom I've seen many decent vids for so to find one is awesome. Sepia-coloured angst that manages to convey the larger than life feel of the Star Wars universe. Well drawn parallels between the Obi/Qui and Anakin/Padme storylines as well.

Runs in the Family
- Stargate Atlantis, Gen ensemble, John pov. I would like to nominate this vid for the 'ingenious song choice' award. The frantic, brassy, bitter anger of the Amanda Palmer song is perfect for John and this fucked-up family of his. Love the Teyla sequence and overall use of the Wraith in the first half, and then, gah, it gets even more twisted and... yeah. Awesome.

Love the Teyla sequence and overall use of the Wraith in the first half, and then, gah, it gets even more twisted and... yeah. Awesome.

kat_lair: (SGA - memories)

For those of you following the RL drama, I'm happy to report that I'm back home (since Thu night) and that my bathroom once more has a floor and other essential parts. [livejournal.com profile] moth2fic and her husband are very hospitable and generous people. My landlord is also mostly great except when he locks the bottom lock on my flat door, the one he never gave me a key for, forcing me and the cats stand in the hallway for 20mins, waiting for him to come and open the door. Sigh.

Then last night my upstairs neighbours invited me for drinks, which was... interesting. But nice. I had many drinks and by the time I made it to bed, world was spinning alarmingly. I'm pretty sure I texted [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 something about flowers but I have no idea why or what it was about.

Aaaaaaanyway. I have many other things I'd like to ramble at you about, but I kind of feel like it's all boring to anyone who isn't in fact me.

So instead: recs. I also have soooooooooo many things to rec you that I'm going to have to spread them out. Today you'll get the vid recs, fic stuff another day.

Vids Recs

Anything You Like - Primeval, Abby/Connor. Primeval can be louded for giving me one of the few het canon couples in TV that I actually like. No, not like. Adore. Because that's what they and this vid are: adorable. This is fun and flirty, the song choice works surprisingly well, and there are some hilarious jokes with lyris (Connor 'tries a little Freddie', it don't work out *snicker*). Finally, ngl, I'd bang Connor Temple like a church bell in a hurricane. Nnnggh.

How Far We've Come - Primeval, Gen Team. This vid is in the same post as the above one. Oh teeeeeeeeeeeeeeam. I love, love this vid but watching it makes my heart ache (especially the Nick/Stephen scenes - yes, dammit STILL BITTER ABOUT THEM). Epic team goodness; good times, bad times, and all the love and friendship in between.

Extreme Ways - Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve. This is different from most of the other H50 vids I've seen. The washed-out effect on the colouring coupled with some interesting clip choices make this feel very... contained somehow, almost claustrophic. Danny and Steve, orbiting around each other, caught in the ugly never-ending fight that is their job. Unsettling.

One Week
- Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve. Steve has a history of taking of his shirt. Yes, of course. This song was made for this show. And well, every fandom ever, really (check e.g. the House M.D. vid to it I recced ages ago here). Nel's vids are consistenly awesome and this is no exception. The lyric/clip matching is funny and clever and the vid goes effortlessly between humour and serious moments, just like the song.

One Week
- Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Oh look. Here's the same song again, this time used for a different flaily couple of flailiness. Vid captures brilliantly the sheer absurdity of living with Sherlock Holmes and the fond if long-suffering way John deals with that. Also, the vid gets a  gold star for the best clips ever for the lyric 'boom anime babes that make me think the wrong thing' - I've seen it like three times now and that bit still makes burst into laughter.

War Drums - Sherlock, John character study. Oh my. Here's another song that happens to have another amazing vid made to it (recced here) so when I found a Sherlock vid using it, I had to watch. And wow. I am a huge fan of John who is much darker, harder and twisted than he lets the world to see, John who came back from the war changed, and not necessarily for the better. This vid portrays perfectly the kind of unhealthy mutual dependance between him and Sherlock; violent and exhilarating and scary. The ending is brilliant.

Thistle & Weeds - Stargate Atlantis, John character study. John has issues. Many, many issues. Some of those are about how fucking much he needs his team and exactly how far he'll go to keep them. This is an achy, yet oddly hopeful vid that makes my chest feel hollow and too full at the same time. The pace and editing are amazing and the vid just sweeps you along, relentless. There are sections here where the combination of the music, lyrics and the clip absolutely break me.

Sigh No More - Stargate Atlantis, Gen Team. Same vidder, using another song from Mumford and Sons. This vid is life-affirming and uplifting. Like the song says: "the beauty of love as it was made to be". Gorgeous.

Pornstar Dancing
- Multi fandom. The vidder summarises it thusly: "Being a thoughtful, sensitive, and nuanced examination of gendered expressions and characterisations of desire. (Also known as: Let's Objectify Men.)" I feel that it is an entirely accurate description. Man flesh. Plenty of it. Bonus points for Domme Morgana putting men on their knees *approves hard*

True Who - Doctor Who. This is a Doctor Who intro credits done in style and to the music of True Blood. It works unexpctedly well, making the show seems pretty darn... sleazy. *g* I'd watch it! Delightful.

Fidelity - Life on Mars, Gene/Sam. Regina Spektor and LoM is an unexpected combination that somehow makes complete sense after you've seen this. Because Sam's emo is both angsty and hilarious, and utterly useless when faced with the force of nature that is Gene Hunt. There is somehing very charming about this vid that endears it to me greatly.

Some Peace - Angel the Series & Buffy the Vampire Slayer, various characters and canon relationships. Absolutely gorgeous look at the personal journeys of some of the key characters in the two shows. The song choice is excellent and there is a palpable feel of sacrifice and grief to the vid. There are no happy endings here, but there is maybe some peace.

Sleepwalker - The OC, Ryan/Seth. I've only seen a few episodes (and several fanvids) of this show, but once upon a time I binged myself on the all the good fic out there (sadly, not nearly enough). Anyway, this video, and Seth and Ryan, break my heart like I gathered the show breaked the hearts of its fans. Angst. Angst, angst, angst. But so, so beautiful. Like with many Fabella's vids there is a dream-like quality to this, with the backflash/memory sections effortlessly overlain with with the sections showing Ryan's bloody and bare-knuckled way of dealing with them. Painful but absolutely mesmerising. The song choice is inspired (love it when fandoms collide) and one of my favourites of Adam's as well.

Home Being Human (UK), ensemble, friendship (canon relationships). Spoilers for the whole series so far, so if you haven't seen the finale yet and don't want to be spoiled then don't watch. And when you do watch... Have a metric ton of tissues ready because this will make you fucking wail. Or at least it made me. Annie, George and Mitchell found a home with each other, if only for a while. A beautiful, heart-breaking/healing/breaking vid. I want so much OT4 fic now.

kat_lair: (GEN - story time)
So I wake up deciding to definitely, maybe, sort of, have a proper sick day. Three hours later I've: washed the dishes, done some hand-washing, cleaned and changed cats' litter day, checked flist and left/answered comments, done a tiny little bit of thesis work and drank two mugs of coffee. Um. I should maybe also eat something? And like, find the cold meds? (For those of you interested, my voice is slowly returning, today I can actually make some sounds, though they are not particularly melodious).

Anyway, there was point to this post and it was RECS!

***

Here is another extremely mixed bag of recs of the 'I've read/watched these recently and enjoyed them' variety. I made some attempt to group them by fandom, but that's about it. Old and new stuff both.

Fics:

After the Nile (LJ link), Due South, Fraser/RayK. Every now and then I return to this fandom to wallow in the epic fic it produces. This takes the typical 'post-canon quest for Franklin's hand' premise, but makes it something almost lyrical, but in the funny, gritty, foul-mouthed pov of Ray Kowalski. Hugely enjoyable.

Flowers Can Grow Between the Cracks in the Sidewalk, The Fast and The Furious, Mia/Letty. Here's a fandom not especially known for its femmeslash, but this fic does an excellent job at correcting that in a very believable way. As usual, it's the women who are left to clean up and get on with things after the dust settles.

The History of Two Conversations (On Paper). Merlin, Arthur/Merlin. I have such a soft spot for epistolary fics; here Arthur and Merlin scribble notes on the margins of a spell book. Adorable.

Distraction and its sequel My Object All Sublime, Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Sherlock wears a collar, but it doesn't mean anything if he puts it on himself. Good thing John is there to take over that bit. Oh god, oh godddddddd. This, this is how you do collar and discipline kink. So, so hot, and not really about sex at all (except in the ways it sort of is). Highly recced.

The Death and Resurrection of the English Language, Sherlock, John/Sherlock. This is the way I like my Sherlock; twisted but so very aware of it; knowing what is Fine and what is Not Fine to want, but wanting it anyway, and working out the way to get it. And by 'it' he of course means John Watson. All of him. In every way possible. Forever. This is a fascinating trip inside Sherlock's head; dark and intense and full of absolutes. A raw, visceral, scorchingly hot fic. Can't recommend it enough.

The Shape I Found You In, Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Sherlock goes to Stockholm on a case. He and John exchanges texts and emails and talk about some things it's high time they talked about. This is the epistolary fic of my heart. Have read it a couple of times now and it makes me melt into a puddle of happy goo every single time. Highly recced.

In Which We Change, Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/McCoy, AU. An interesting take on werewolves. I was left wanting more, though I can also appreciate why the author finished where they did.

Unwritten, Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/McCoy, AU. Jim is YA author who also works for a publishing house. Leonard McCoy is a recluse author who is about to be rediscovered whether he likes it or not (spoiler: he doesn't). I came for the pairing, but stayed for the excellent meta on writing.

Office Hours, Star Trek Reboot RPS, Pine/Quinto. College AU. Zach is young adjunct professer. Chris is his student. Kat enjoys this fic probably way more than she should. Nnggaaaah, such a guilty pleasure fic but oh god, could not put it down. Hot. Hot hot hot.

hit it hard enough and even skin will tear
, Bandom, Patrick/Pete. Nnngghhh. One of my all time d/s favourites for this pairing. Filthy in the best of ways.

Nightingale (And Not the Lark), Bandom, Patrick/Pete, background Brendon/Ryan and Jon/Spencer. CSI AU. There is something both very unnerving and yet beautiful about the way the author writes Pete and Patrick here. I was equal amounts fascinated and uncomfortable, and not sure whether to be relieved or disappointed when the fic didn't go to the dark place I was fully expecting it to end up in.

Overheard ("Less Talk, More Rock"), Bandom, Patrick/Pete, some others. Omg how have I not recced this before? This 35,000 words of dirty talk and it never gets boring, not once. Pete tells the world that Patrick has no game. Pete, it turns out, is very, very wrong. Unf unf unffffff.

Put Down Your Weapons, Bandom, Patrick/Pete. Patrick stops talking, because it's just easier like that. Lovely.

Chiaroscuro, Bandom, Patrick/Pete. Art school AU. Utterly delightful. Pete is an idiot but he gets the clue eventually. Loved the photography details and cameos of everyone.

Walk The Line
, Bandom, Spencer/Ryan. Oh the the other BFF pairing of my heart. Boys feeling their way from 'experimenting with a friend' to 'boyfriends'. Slow and gorgeous.

this year’s love, Bandom, Spencer/Ryan. Mmmm ust. Plays beautifully for that 'suddenly seeing someone in a new light' cliche that I'm very fond of. Also, Spencer is devious.

planes mistaken for stars, Bandom, Brendon/Shane. Achy and realistic. Sometimes wanting to be with someone isn't enough.

Conversational Japanese, Plus Frogs, Torchwood, Jack/Ianto, but really this is about the friendship between Ianto and Tosh. Absolutely delightful, great character study of both Ianto and Tosh, funny and touching in equal measure.

The Assist, Torchwood, Rhys/Ianto/Gwen. Author summarises this as: "Three adorable Welsh people have sex." which is exactly what happens. And 'lo it is indeed adorable and hot.

Eight Crazy Pilots Serenity Didn't Keep, Multi (Firefly, Farscape, SGA, SG1, Star Wars, BSG). Title says it all. Funny, heartbreaking and absolutely brilliant.

Ten Song Drabbles, Supernatural, Bandom, Stargate Universe. I'm pretty sure the author didn't bother pimping these anywhere *glares at her*, which is a crying shame as they are all excellent and well worth checking out.

Vids:

Rock Star, (download link) NCIS, ensemble. Rock on, the NCIS team! I've grown unexpectedly fond of this show and the vid is just relentless and action-packed.

Rabbit Hearted Girl, Supernatural, the Harvelle women. Strength, sacrifice, love. All the meta you ever wanted about how the show treated Ellen and Jo, in a 4 minute video that will make you bawl your eyes out.

Ki- ki- kiss me, Supernatural, Castiel/Dean. I'm fairly neutral about this pairing, but I can really get behind by the 'teetering on violent' tension this vid creates. Hot.

This is the Picture, Whedonverse multi. Very, very clever vid. Works better if you're familiar with most of source material as the parallels are pulled forth and laid bare. Harrowing and human.

Alone, Merlin, Arthur/Merlin. Arthur has ~feelings~ that can only be expressed through an 80's power ballad. Genius. I laughed so hard I almost peed myself, for reals. Bonus points for the best use of the slash-dragon ever.

The Tower
, Merlin, Morgana character study (from before she got a personality transplant). Gorgeous, the song choice is just perfect. I want this Morgana full of ambiguity, not the one the show insists on giving me.

Brickhouse, (Link goes to vidder's homepage as requested, go to vids, scroll down to miscellaneous fandoms), Multi-source, Gina Torres. A worthy tribute of a smoking hot lady. Unf.

Black Velvet, Glee, Kurt. Inspired song choice. Also, I love Kurt, I really do, and this brings all the sublime tragedy to the fore.

REMEMBER TO LEAVE FEEDBACK TO THE AUTHORS AND VIDDERS!

Happy Saturday Flist!

Yesterday's conference presentation went well and my paper garnered compliments and expressions of interest. Also, so did my glasses. IDEK, but it was nice. Better than all that was that my supervisor called my presentations slides "impressive" which made me preen like a freshly groomed labra-doodle.

To celebrate this, I'm going to spend the weekend doing other things (read: non-uni-related things). I have lots of stuff on my Epic To Do List that needs crossing off. But I also want to write some fic and mess about in fireworks today and pretend I know what to do with graphics (ahahaha, but um, I have fun?). I have Amaretto coffee (wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!) and plan on staying in bed until such time as Merlin starts and I have to drag ass to the lounge where the TV lives.

Speaking of Merlin, did you know that Colin and Bradley write songs together. Where is my band AU, that's all I want to know.

Have a couple of recs. Because I'm awesome like that.

Fics:
Speech, Star Trek: Reboot, gen. Uhura and language, breath-takingly gorgeous.
Drowning Man (+ sequels), Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Eeeeeveryone's probably read it already, but in case you haven't you should get on that. Commended for keeping my attention even after it moved into established relationship (notoriously difficult to do with me), characterisation is A+ all around.
An Act of Charity, Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Another one that has been recced all over but justifiably, Sherlock has two lists. Dark and sharp is how I tend to like my Sherlock and this delivers.
Sauntering Vaguely Downwards, CWRPS, J2. Boys are geeks who end up and roomies at Dragon*Con. Pure mind candy, schmoopy as hell but very entertaining. Also: Jensen cos-playing Crowley from Good Omens. Why yes, just imagining it makes me happy in my pants.

Vids:
A Study in Time, Doctor Who/Sherlock, trailer. I need this show in my life desperately. BBC should get on that pronto.
A mock season six promo, Supernatural. Completely amazing fan-made season six promo, literally made me clutch my heart.
Unnatural Selection, Multi. Post-apocalyptic. Chilling.

Oh, and My Chem discover colour! I approve and cannot decide whether I want to molest them or pinch their cheeks for being so adorkable. MAYBE BOTH.

In conclusion: MOAR COFFEE!
