Fic Round-Up 2023

Compared to the last two years 2023 was a fucking success writing wise. I smashed the 75k [community profile] getyourwordsout goal with the final total of 78k. Not all of that is finished/published so, according to AO3, the total published word count is ~58k

Wow Kat, what's that sound? Well, glad you asked. It's the sound of me SMASHING through my 75k [community profile] getyourwordsout goal! BOOM! We're currently >78k and there's still a day to go.

*smug*

Much of the words came from a) co-writing done with [personal profile] dreamersdare and b) because I churned over 24k for Spooktober fics/ficlets, even if some of that churning happened after Christmas lol. Posting most of them back-to-back was a really interesting experience actually and I have some reflections.

(under the cut, it's all very self indulgent) )

I was always going to do a Spooktober Masterlist for my own amusement. I know I'm about to list all of these for the 2023 Fic Round Up soon (well... Sometime in Jan?) anyway but there everything will be by fandom so let me just induldge my love of lists *pets the list* so, here, Spooktober Fics in posting order (links will take you to AO3 but if you prefer DW for reading, everything is under the spooktober 2023 tag.

List under a cut due to length! )

I have signed up [community profile] getyourwordsout again because I love their spreadsheets. I've gone for the 150k optimistically even though I've never achieved that. It's good to have goals or something?

Finally, I wanted to flail about being podficced!!

The lovely [archiveofourown.org profile] pezzax_podfics podficced under his wing (TXT, Choi Soobin/Choi Yeonjun) and turned a tiny ficlet into a full-blown audio drama with music and sound effects and it is so, so extremely cool I absolutely lost mine when listening. Also, please appreciate the cover art! (akdkjsj wings!)

The most awesome [archiveofourown.org profile] pieces0fstars podficced Volcano (Stray Kids, Han Jisung/Lee Minho) and holy shit the emotional impact the recording packs... Look, I obviously had a lot of emotions about the concepts which I wrote immediately after the song dropped. But the thing is, I wrote the fic so I knew what was in the fucker and yet, YET, I was absolutely choked up, clutching my heart, because the performance got that exact frayed, desperate edge I tried to convey in words and... Yeah, please listen.

Firstly, surprise: I'm not dead. Just... Work has been absolute bugger and we shall not discuss the number of overtime hours. So, not dead, but just Knackered = haven't had energy to even sign on to DW for weeks and weeks and Weeks. And I miss people and fandom and I miss who I am among my people and fandom here, but it's just been work, eat, sleep with maybe some mindless media consumption in form of tv or fic in between. For the last couple of years I've given up reading fanfic for Lent but this is not the year to do so not even doing that.

Anyway. Making no promised but it may be that I've broken the back of some work things and may be that I will have some energy for actual updates and other posts before summer. Mayyyy  be.

However, in the meanwhile, whilst it's still at least the first quarter of the year...

Fic and Art Round-Up 2020

Well, despite it being A YEAR and the fact that I failed both my [community profile] getyourwordsout goal (wrote 86k/150k) and my auction commitments, I did produce some things.

Meme Questions

Total: 24 fics + 4 art + 1 mix
Total Word Count Posted: ~92k (includes all the co-authored round robin fics)

Leitmotifs of the year:
  • Round Robins fuck yeah! [personal profile] pushkin666, [personal profile] dreamersdare and I had many fangirl vid nights to make up for the loss of originally planned in person ones (though we did manage it in July) and started writing Round Robins to get the creative juices going and it was So Much Fun! Otherwise... New fandoms, old fandoms, all the fandoms?
  • And also Big Fat Nothing in the latter quarter of the year because work got shitty

Most popular story:
By metric of hits and kudos, it's Toss A Bone To Your Witcher. By metric of comments, Fac Mihi Viam, which also comes close second with hits and kudos. First I kind of understand because Witcher fandom is still indiscriminately thirsty. The second was the unexpected runaway success of the year. It's older fandom, it's gen... Would not have bet on this story to get the attention it did.

My best story this year:

But I love all my children? Okay, okay, Fac Mihi Viam I am actually pleased with because of the it manages to handle the subject matter with some subtlety. i have my reasons (call it my defense) delivers the atmosphere and impact. now i lay me down to sleep delivers... something. Ugh. Weirdness?

Hardest story to write:
let me hear your body talk but only because of the research element. I spent a lot of time watching muya Thai videos on youtube and googling yoga poses.

Easiest story to write:
Idk... Maybe the round robins because they were just fun things done in short bits and no one cared about plot that much. I also remember being kinda inspired for shine a light (burn it bright) because [personal profile] dreamersdare's story demanded more.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

now i lay me down to sleep? To be fair, I wouldn't click on it either, being as it is 500 words of weird gen dreamscape psychological horror.

Most fun story to write:
talk's cheap and so's your mouth because I really enjoy Jayne's voice. Oh and Toss A Bone To Your Witcher (no, I do not accept any criticism on the title) because Jaskier's pov turned out to be fun too. Oh, Retrogression because Deadpool! And actually, all the round robin ficlets because they involved [personal profile] pushkin666  and [personal profile] dreamersdare

Fluffiest story:
Hmmm...?? A lot of my ficlets tended toward fluff. Sun Crown and bright my hopes, and soft are both about flowers and feelings. Smudge, revolución del corazón, Shelter and gotta have faith all offer sweet relationship moments. Of the longer ones, the reason comes on the common tongue (of you loving me) brings the slowburn friends to lovers romance of maybe not fluff per se but feelings. Oh, oh your scent on me (for many days) has clothes sharing! That's the winner!

Most angsty story:
Idk... Liminal? Because Remus is kind of Like That. Realignment has some h/c but not really angst... Fac Mihi Viam deals with Harry's less that nurturing upbringing though not explicitly but assuming events proceed as canon it casts whole layer of angst to the thing so...

Sexiest story:
restraint (release), also affectionately known as Absolute Filth. It's 6k of edging, oral fixation and every fantasy scenario for the pairing I could shove in there and it is, well, Absolutely Filthy. You're welcome. let me hear your body talk brings the prolonged sexual tension though so if you like your edging more emotional, that's the one for you...

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
I don't know why I keep this question in... I didn't really write anything particularly outrageous this year. Incest, explicit sex, demons, dystopian themes, nightmares, dark fey all featured. Eh.

Biggest Disappointment:
Not finishing my Get Your Words Out target and not finishing my auction fics. This academic year has been the Absolute Worst I've ever experienced in terms of of issues and workloads, to say nothing of the continued remote working which brings its own challenges. Sep-Dec was mostly a wash when it came to creativity because I was just too exhausted to string a sentence together, quite literally some days. So far this year hasn't been much better either... Sigh.

Biggest Surprise:
Fac Mihi Viam because of the reasons explained above. Did not expect it to make much of an impression but apparently it did. i have my reasons (call it my defense) has a stupid hit count for something is just a little ficlet but apparently BFU fandom are still horny for demon!Shane so...

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
I mean... I'm not exactly subtle about my kinks... Beyond that, I don't think I wrote anything this year that was particularly, idk, revealing. Professional knowledge was used in some fics to a certain degree. Kinks were indulged.

Story I haven't yet written, but intend/hope to:
Just want to have the creative energy to write something, honestly. I have wips on the go and ideas but I just don't know when/how I'm going to claw back the time and mental fortitude.

Meme Questions

Total: 24 fics + 2 art
Total Word Count For the Year: ~92k

Leitmotifs of the year:
  • Old fandoms (hello SGA, Bandom, GO!)
  • New fandoms (hello Guardian, Venom, ST Discovery!)
  • Original fic (holy shit yes!)
  • Everything is typically either drabble/ficlet or well over 10k, there is very little in the middle
  • No icons and not very much graphics. Loss of all my textures and fonts in the Great Laptop Crash of Summer 2019 has kind of taken the wind out of my art sails. But I did sign up to do art for [community profile] smallfandombang and [community profile] het_bigbang again soooo...

(As usual, I can't pick just one answer to any of these really...)

Most popular story:
How to measure? I mean the last two were only posted very recently so there's not much to say about their popularity yet (although a surprising number of comments on take this longing from my tongue). Hits/kudos/comments suggest that The Black Lotus Club takes the crown (geddit?) here. I was really blown away by how enthusiastic the fandom is. A Fine Day comes as a surprise second because I don't even really go there but... Venom fandom easily pleased? Good to know I guess!

My best story this year:
Vlarian Oath or so people tell me. I am pleased with the world-building. here to collect your heart because of the pacing and delivering the impact. I don't write a lot of dark!fic but on occasion... The Black Lotus Club because of some of the language and descriptions. Lose A Kraken, Gain An Angel because I'm pleased with the style, the footnotes, the fact that it has made people laugh and cry.

Hardest story to write:
Vlarian Oath, take this longing from my tongue and until the end, until this blood all very difficult but only because of the time pressure. Each was pretty much written in less than a week all together, though with pauses in between. until the end, until this blood certainly was squeezed out between Christmas and NY. Last minute winner! I didn't write anything with like emotionally difficult themes this year.

Easiest story to write:
Hmmm... Maybe some of the Character Sketches or Substitute cos I wrote those drunk :D But also Lose A Kraken, Gain An Angel, because I find the Pratchett'esque irreverence and liberal use of footnotes rather relaxing.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Idk, the fic with lowers hits/kudos are the short ones I never expected much for anyway. I guess maybe Lose A Kraken, Gain An Angel but then again GO fandom is super oversaturated with excellent fic atm. But like, my original fic got way more hits and kudos that that which is puzzling! Art most underappreciated though: Uber Mood Board! I'm really proud of it but it's such a small fandom indeed... Would btw recommend the story!

Most fun story to write:
Lose A Kraken, Gain An Angel because irreverence and footnotes! I also had fun with Carte Blanche which was pretty much pure id fic. Oh, and A Fine Day because Venom voice is something I enjoyed a lot!

Fluffiest story:
Sweet Tooth, Sweetheart is pretty sugary, literally :D And Warmer Together just has some pre-poly snuggles so...

Most angsty story:
Depends how you look at it. Like until the end, until this blood has some consent and 'fuck or die' related angst. The Black Lotus Club has the 'I'm trying to keep away for your own good but feelings' angst that is given for SW/ZYL, also a heavy feature of the Shen Wei Character Sketch. However, for proper angst I'd go with here to collect your heart because... No happy ending in sight.

Sexiest story:
A surprising amount of explicit sex this year! Vivat Regina, Carte Blanche, Substitute and non nobis solum were all explicitly porn focused. All the longer fics also had sex scenes, though they weren't the focus per se. Except maybe for Vlarian Oath were getting in some alien tentacle f/f action was totally the driving force (just required a lot of world building to get there lol). Personal winner for me though is The Black Lotus Club though because the drawn out d/s ust and manhandling and SW controlling the pace while SYL rides him... Special mention for the scene with the chocolate tasting in until the end, until this blood.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:

I don't think I did anything newly outrageous. There was some alien tentacle sex in Vlarian Oath (tentacles done before), incest in until the end, until this blood (incest written A LOT, although this was first time for Sentinel!AU)... Oh, maybe the outright non-con in Vivat Regina and the implied vore in here to collect your heart?

Biggest Disappointment:
I'm not really that disappointed about anything writing related. 92k is fucking good going. *pats self on the back*

Biggest Surprise:
Vlarian Oath has done way better than I expected, considering it's original f/f with a rather niche concept. It also got recced. I also got a really long rec on an older fic (that Hansel/Gretel one...) which was such a lovely surprise. Oh and all the awesome art HanHathma has done, including several pieces I'm still trying to convince her to post on AO3 and not just like WhatsApp me.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
I mean... The Black Lotus Club is pure id fic. Never made any secret of that. But also Vlarian Oath in a way.

Story I haven't yet written, but intend/hope to:
The [community profile] smallfandombang fic, the first draft of which is due in, oh, four weeks. Haha. Ha. Anyway, I really hope I can pull it off and don't have to withdraw last minute. It's going to be Amos/Alex from the Expanse and in the well-loved genre of 'then they all had some space adventures together, probably had to pretend to be a couple at some point and maybe some d/s vibe happens too, as it does. in space'. The 4th season is out now but I haven't watched it and not sure I'm going to incorporate much canon beyond the basic premise. More likely set somewhere between seasons 2 and 3. Otherwise, I both nominated and plan to sign up to [community profile] chocolateboxcomm for the first time. I would like to also write the purely self-indulgent Guardian porn about Zhao Yunlan's oral fixation that I've had in my mind for ages. Generally, I just pledged at [community profile] getyourwordsout like a fool so... That's happening.

Vid Recs!

Mar. 26th, 2011 03:47 pm
kat_lair: (SGA - memories)

For those of you following the RL drama, I'm happy to report that I'm back home (since Thu night) and that my bathroom once more has a floor and other essential parts. [livejournal.com profile] moth2fic and her husband are very hospitable and generous people. My landlord is also mostly great except when he locks the bottom lock on my flat door, the one he never gave me a key for, forcing me and the cats stand in the hallway for 20mins, waiting for him to come and open the door. Sigh.

Then last night my upstairs neighbours invited me for drinks, which was... interesting. But nice. I had many drinks and by the time I made it to bed, world was spinning alarmingly. I'm pretty sure I texted [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 something about flowers but I have no idea why or what it was about.

Aaaaaaanyway. I have many other things I'd like to ramble at you about, but I kind of feel like it's all boring to anyone who isn't in fact me.

So instead: recs. I also have soooooooooo many things to rec you that I'm going to have to spread them out. Today you'll get the vid recs, fic stuff another day.

Vids Recs

Anything You Like - Primeval, Abby/Connor. Primeval can be louded for giving me one of the few het canon couples in TV that I actually like. No, not like. Adore. Because that's what they and this vid are: adorable. This is fun and flirty, the song choice works surprisingly well, and there are some hilarious jokes with lyris (Connor 'tries a little Freddie', it don't work out *snicker*). Finally, ngl, I'd bang Connor Temple like a church bell in a hurricane. Nnnggh.

How Far We've Come - Primeval, Gen Team. This vid is in the same post as the above one. Oh teeeeeeeeeeeeeeam. I love, love this vid but watching it makes my heart ache (especially the Nick/Stephen scenes - yes, dammit STILL BITTER ABOUT THEM). Epic team goodness; good times, bad times, and all the love and friendship in between.

Extreme Ways - Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve. This is different from most of the other H50 vids I've seen. The washed-out effect on the colouring coupled with some interesting clip choices make this feel very... contained somehow, almost claustrophic. Danny and Steve, orbiting around each other, caught in the ugly never-ending fight that is their job. Unsettling.

One Week
- Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Steve. Steve has a history of taking of his shirt. Yes, of course. This song was made for this show. And well, every fandom ever, really (check e.g. the House M.D. vid to it I recced ages ago here). Nel's vids are consistenly awesome and this is no exception. The lyric/clip matching is funny and clever and the vid goes effortlessly between humour and serious moments, just like the song.

One Week
- Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Oh look. Here's the same song again, this time used for a different flaily couple of flailiness. Vid captures brilliantly the sheer absurdity of living with Sherlock Holmes and the fond if long-suffering way John deals with that. Also, the vid gets a  gold star for the best clips ever for the lyric 'boom anime babes that make me think the wrong thing' - I've seen it like three times now and that bit still makes burst into laughter.

War Drums - Sherlock, John character study. Oh my. Here's another song that happens to have another amazing vid made to it (recced here) so when I found a Sherlock vid using it, I had to watch. And wow. I am a huge fan of John who is much darker, harder and twisted than he lets the world to see, John who came back from the war changed, and not necessarily for the better. This vid portrays perfectly the kind of unhealthy mutual dependance between him and Sherlock; violent and exhilarating and scary. The ending is brilliant.

Thistle & Weeds - Stargate Atlantis, John character study. John has issues. Many, many issues. Some of those are about how fucking much he needs his team and exactly how far he'll go to keep them. This is an achy, yet oddly hopeful vid that makes my chest feel hollow and too full at the same time. The pace and editing are amazing and the vid just sweeps you along, relentless. There are sections here where the combination of the music, lyrics and the clip absolutely break me.

Sigh No More - Stargate Atlantis, Gen Team. Same vidder, using another song from Mumford and Sons. This vid is life-affirming and uplifting. Like the song says: "the beauty of love as it was made to be". Gorgeous.

Pornstar Dancing
- Multi fandom. The vidder summarises it thusly: "Being a thoughtful, sensitive, and nuanced examination of gendered expressions and characterisations of desire. (Also known as: Let's Objectify Men.)" I feel that it is an entirely accurate description. Man flesh. Plenty of it. Bonus points for Domme Morgana putting men on their knees *approves hard*

True Who - Doctor Who. This is a Doctor Who intro credits done in style and to the music of True Blood. It works unexpctedly well, making the show seems pretty darn... sleazy. *g* I'd watch it! Delightful.

Fidelity - Life on Mars, Gene/Sam. Regina Spektor and LoM is an unexpected combination that somehow makes complete sense after you've seen this. Because Sam's emo is both angsty and hilarious, and utterly useless when faced with the force of nature that is Gene Hunt. There is somehing very charming about this vid that endears it to me greatly.

Some Peace - Angel the Series & Buffy the Vampire Slayer, various characters and canon relationships. Absolutely gorgeous look at the personal journeys of some of the key characters in the two shows. The song choice is excellent and there is a palpable feel of sacrifice and grief to the vid. There are no happy endings here, but there is maybe some peace.

Sleepwalker - The OC, Ryan/Seth. I've only seen a few episodes (and several fanvids) of this show, but once upon a time I binged myself on the all the good fic out there (sadly, not nearly enough). Anyway, this video, and Seth and Ryan, break my heart like I gathered the show breaked the hearts of its fans. Angst. Angst, angst, angst. But so, so beautiful. Like with many Fabella's vids there is a dream-like quality to this, with the backflash/memory sections effortlessly overlain with with the sections showing Ryan's bloody and bare-knuckled way of dealing with them. Painful but absolutely mesmerising. The song choice is inspired (love it when fandoms collide) and one of my favourites of Adam's as well.

Home Being Human (UK), ensemble, friendship (canon relationships). Spoilers for the whole series so far, so if you haven't seen the finale yet and don't want to be spoiled then don't watch. And when you do watch... Have a metric ton of tissues ready because this will make you fucking wail. Or at least it made me. Annie, George and Mitchell found a home with each other, if only for a while. A beautiful, heart-breaking/healing/breaking vid. I want so much OT4 fic now.

Vid Recs!

kat_lair: (SGA - memories)

Oh teeeeeeeeeeeeeeam. kat_lair: (GEN - story time)
So I wake up deciding to definitely, maybe, sort of, have a proper sick day. Three hours later I've: washed the dishes, done some hand-washing, cleaned and changed cats' litter day, checked flist and left/answered comments, done a tiny little bit of thesis work and drank two mugs of coffee. Um. I should maybe also eat something? And like, find the cold meds? (For those of you interested, my voice is slowly returning, today I can actually make some sounds, though they are not particularly melodious).

Anyway, there was point to this post and it was RECS!

***

Here is another extremely mixed bag of recs of the 'I've read/watched these recently and enjoyed them' variety. I made some attempt to group them by fandom, but that's about it. Old and new stuff both.

Fics:

After the Nile (LJ link), Due South, Fraser/RayK. Every now and then I return to this fandom to wallow in the epic fic it produces. This takes the typical 'post-canon quest for Franklin's hand' premise, but makes it something almost lyrical, but in the funny, gritty, foul-mouthed pov of Ray Kowalski. Hugely enjoyable.

Flowers Can Grow Between the Cracks in the Sidewalk, The Fast and The Furious, Mia/Letty. Here's a fandom not especially known for its femmeslash, but this fic does an excellent job at correcting that in a very believable way. As usual, it's the women who are left to clean up and get on with things after the dust settles.

The History of Two Conversations (On Paper). Merlin, Arthur/Merlin. I have such a soft spot for epistolary fics; here Arthur and Merlin scribble notes on the margins of a spell book. Adorable.

Distraction and its sequel My Object All Sublime, Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Sherlock wears a collar, but it doesn't mean anything if he puts it on himself. Good thing John is there to take over that bit. Oh god, oh godddddddd. This, this is how you do collar and discipline kink. So, so hot, and not really about sex at all (except in the ways it sort of is). Highly recced.

The Death and Resurrection of the English Language, Sherlock, John/Sherlock. This is the way I like my Sherlock; twisted but so very aware of it; knowing what is Fine and what is Not Fine to want, but wanting it anyway, and working out the way to get it. And by 'it' he of course means John Watson. All of him. In every way possible. Forever. This is a fascinating trip inside Sherlock's head; dark and intense and full of absolutes. A raw, visceral, scorchingly hot fic. Can't recommend it enough.

The Shape I Found You In, Sherlock, John/Sherlock. Sherlock goes to Stockholm on a case. He and John exchanges texts and emails and talk about some things it's high time they talked about. This is the epistolary fic of my heart. Have read it a couple of times now and it makes me melt into a puddle of happy goo every single time. Highly recced.

In Which We Change, Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/McCoy, AU. An interesting take on werewolves. I was left wanting more, though I can also appreciate why the author finished where they did.

Unwritten, Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/McCoy, AU. Jim is YA author who also works for a publishing house. Leonard McCoy is a recluse author who is about to be rediscovered whether he likes it or not (spoiler: he doesn't). I came for the pairing, but stayed for the excellent meta on writing.

Office Hours, Star Trek Reboot RPS, Pine/Quinto. College AU. Zach is young adjunct professer. Chris is his student. Kat enjoys this fic probably way more than she should. Nnggaaaah, such a guilty pleasure fic but oh god, could not put it down. Hot. Hot hot hot.

hit it hard enough and even skin will tear
, Bandom, Patrick/Pete. Nnngghhh. One of my all time d/s favourites for this pairing. Filthy in the best of ways.

Nightingale (And Not the Lark), Bandom, Patrick/Pete, background Brendon/Ryan and Jon/Spencer. CSI AU. There is something both very unnerving and yet beautiful about the way the author writes Pete and Patrick here. I was equal amounts fascinated and uncomfortable, and not sure whether to be relieved or disappointed when the fic didn't go to the dark place I was fully expecting it to end up in.

Overheard ("Less Talk, More Rock"), Bandom, Patrick/Pete, some others. Omg how have I not recced this before? This 35,000 words of dirty talk and it never gets boring, not once. Pete tells the world that Patrick has no game. Pete, it turns out, is very, very wrong. Unf unf unffffff.

Put Down Your Weapons, Bandom, Patrick/Pete. Patrick stops talking, because it's just easier like that. Lovely.

Chiaroscuro, Bandom, Patrick/Pete. Art school AU. Utterly delightful. Pete is an idiot but he gets the clue eventually. Loved the photography details and cameos of everyone.

Walk The Line
, Bandom, Spencer/Ryan. Oh the the other BFF pairing of my heart. Boys feeling their way from 'experimenting with a friend' to 'boyfriends'. Slow and gorgeous.

this year’s love, Bandom, Spencer/Ryan. Mmmm ust. Plays beautifully for that 'suddenly seeing someone in a new light' cliche that I'm very fond of. Also, Spencer is devious.

planes mistaken for stars, Bandom, Brendon/Shane. Achy and realistic. Sometimes wanting to be with someone isn't enough.

Conversational Japanese, Plus Frogs, Torchwood, Jack/Ianto, but really this is about the friendship between Ianto and Tosh. Absolutely delightful, great character study of both Ianto and Tosh, funny and touching in equal measure.

The Assist, Torchwood, Rhys/Ianto/Gwen. Author summarises this as: "Three adorable Welsh people have sex." which is exactly what happens. And 'lo it is indeed adorable and hot.

Eight Crazy Pilots Serenity Didn't Keep, Multi (Firefly, Farscape, SGA, SG1, Star Wars, BSG). Title says it all. Funny, heartbreaking and absolutely brilliant.

Ten Song Drabbles, Supernatural, Bandom, Stargate Universe. I'm pretty sure the author didn't bother pimping these anywhere *glares at her*, which is a crying shame as they are all excellent and well worth checking out.

Vids:

Rock Star, (download link) NCIS, ensemble. Rock on, the NCIS team! I've grown unexpectedly fond of this show and the vid is just relentless and action-packed.

Rabbit Hearted Girl, Supernatural, the Harvelle women. Strength, sacrifice, love. All the meta you ever wanted about how the show treated Ellen and Jo, in a 4 minute video that will make you bawl your eyes out.

Ki- ki- kiss me, Supernatural, Castiel/Dean. I'm fairly neutral about this pairing, but I can really get behind by the 'teetering on violent' tension this vid creates. Hot.

This is the Picture, Whedonverse multi. Very, very clever vid. Works better if you're familiar with most of source material as the parallels are pulled forth and laid bare. Harrowing and human.

Alone, Merlin, Arthur/Merlin. Arthur has ~feelings~ that can only be expressed through an 80's power ballad. Genius. I laughed so hard I almost peed myself, for reals. Bonus points for the best use of the slash-dragon ever.

The Tower
, Merlin, Morgana character study (from before she got a personality transplant). Gorgeous, the song choice is just perfect. I want this Morgana full of ambiguity, not the one the show insists on giving me.

Brickhouse, (Link goes to vidder's homepage as requested, go to vids, scroll down to miscellaneous fandoms), Multi-source, Gina Torres. A worthy tribute of a smoking hot lady. Unf.

Black Velvet, Glee, Kurt. Inspired song choice. Also, I love Kurt, I really do, and this brings all the sublime tragedy to the fore.

REMEMBER TO LEAVE FEEDBACK TO THE AUTHORS AND VIDDERS!

kat_lair: (Default)

From the Heavens a bright ligh shone down and on the field the shepperds covered their faces with rags and keened in fear. For lo, the 5th Edition of Kat's Vid Recs of Doom was upon them, and it was portentous.

...

You know that feeling when you get excited and fannish about a TV-show and you want to squee and point and make absolutely everyone watch it, because it’s just that awesome? Well, that’s what this and the next set of vid recs are all about. These are the some of the best “recruiter videos” I’ve come across; the ones that somehow manage to distill what’s best about the show into just few minutes that’s everything you love about it and everything everyone else should too.

ZOMG Watch Mah Show! Part 1

REMEMBER TO LEAVE FEEDBACK TO THE VIDDERS!

Vid: Church
Vidder: Gianduja Kiss aka [personal profile] giandujakiss
Fandom: Buffy The Vampire Slayer & The Angel
Genre/pairing: Show overview, action, Gen
Rambling reason why you should watch this vid: Oh Jossverse, how I miss you so. This is one of the best ensemble vids I’ve seen, showcasing the good guys, the bad guys, and everyone in between Despite the epic feel and clever, clever use of imagery and metaphors and other deep shit like that (no really, there are profound things about authority, higher power, unity, rebellion, and how the generational war really doesn’t have anything to do with age), the video is highly entertaining. It also fills me with strong urge to spend money that I don’t have on purchasing full DVD boxsets of both Buffy and Angel, because it reminds me of how totally awesome those shows were.
Download link and info: From the vidder's website here.   Or view at IMEEM here.

Vid: What About Everything
Vidder: [personal profile] calapine
Fandom: Doctor Who (all incarnations)
Genre/pairing: Show overview, Gen
Rambling reason why you should watch this vid: Ships and aliens, friends and enemies. Companions gained and left behind. And always the Doctor, at the centre or in the sidelines, but always there; apart and helplessly, hopefully connected. The amount of source material the vidder has had to shift through is staggering, even more so because every single clip feels just right and perfect. There is love here, not just for this show, but for the whole (Brit) sci-fi genre, and it filters through. The video is great in every sense of the word: not larger-than-life, but just-like-life, Doctor Who style.
Download link and info: From vidder's original LJ post.   Or view at youtube here.

Vid: Midnights and Cups of Coffee
Vidder: Miruku Koohii 05 aka [profile] miruku_koohii
Fandom: Due South
Genre/pairing: Show love letter (the best way to describe it), ensemble, Fraser/Kowalski (could be friendship)
Rambling reason why you should watch this vid: This video is here for the benefit of the younger F-listers, most of whom, I presume, may have never seen the awesomeness that was Due South. This thought makes me very sad. *shakes head despondently* The show had it all: culture clashes, deaf wolves, judgemental ghosts, fantasy sequences, action, friendship, domesticity… a repressed, exiled mountie and twitchy cop with experimental hair finding love together. (And Callum Keith Rennie who I would jump in a second even if he is a Cylon nowadays…). Anyway, I was supposed to talk about the vid, wasn’t I? Well, the best word to describe it is… heart-warming. Really and truly, this vid fills me with the kind of nostalgic love that burns like slow embers inside, warming me from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. The clips, like the show, are sweet but not cloying, and the song choice equally so. This is one of my guaranteed feel-good videos, that I indulge in every now and then, usually when I need the good kind of cry. Watch the video people. Then buy the DVDs. Then hit me for some fic recs.
Download link and info: From the vidder's website. Scroll down half-way.

Vid: Anodyne
Vidder: [personal profile] sdwolfpup
Fandom: Scrubs
Genre/pairing: Character-centric (JD plus the ensemble), Gen
Rambling reason why you should watch this vid: You should watch the video so that you know why you should watch the show itself. I haven’t a clue how they do it, but Scrubs manages to be both stomach-crampingly hilarious and genuinely touching at the same time. Seriously, this is the show the proved to me that it is, in fact, possible (but not pleasant) to laugh and cry simultaneously. The video is wonderfully upbeat, absurd, sweet and poignant, and maintains the feel of the show perfectly (especially the part about JD’s and Turk’s friendship makes me aaawww all over the place). Excellent introduction to the wacky world of Scrubs.

Vid: Setting Sun
Vidder: Martouf Marty aka [profile] martoufmarty
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Genre/pairing: Action, show overview, Gen
Rambling reason why you should watch this vid: I’m a pretty wordy gal. By that I mean that when it comes to music, it’s the lyrics that usually clinch the deal for me. Which is why I’m always utterly awed when someone can make a video work so spectacularly for a song like this. Well, yes, there are some lyrics here (and pretty fitting and interesting ones at that), but really, it’s mostly about the sound rather than words, and the vidder knows this to the last beat, the last wail of synthesizer. This video is doped up on pure adrenaline (or probably Wraith-enzyme), and the action is just relentless. The editing and clip-choice… I can’t even begin to describe how fabulous those are (the flip-and-reverse scenes fill me with glee, and every time I watch the part with the explosion from Trinity I stop breathing). Everything is somehow very physical and raw and beautiful. Really, it’s like good sex. And with that endorsement I really have to wonder why you’re not downloading the vid already?

Part 1
