Random fun stuff! I hit reblog on that first post *so* fast! And the Buffy one was cool as well.

Also, thank you for assisting in my epic procrastination this evening. I've been trying to write fic since this afternoon. Number of words added to document today so far? 10. And then I found this post and was distracted again :-)

I can't deal with Tumblr format at all (I'd miss talking to people and I prefer to have stuff flocked/private when necessary) but I can't deny that it is full of awesome stuff I need to share :D

I'm always happy to aid with procrastination! Sometimes writing just isn't going to work and that's that, give yourself some guilt-free browsing time!

The only reason I got onto tumblr was because that's where Atlantis fandom seemed to be (the lj Atlantis comm was largely just me posting stuff, and my friends from Primeval fandom who also happened to watch Atlantis joining in with me!). I do much prefer lj in terms of being able to have proper conversations with people, and also more of a sense of community. Tumblr mostly seems to be about the pretty pics and gifs.

Sometimes writing just isn't going to work and that's that, give yourself some guilt-free browsing time!

This is true. I did eventually manage about 1.4k of words yesterday, so it wasn't a complete loss. Unfortunately, the fic deadline is tomorrow, and I was supposed to be working on it again today. So what happened? I opened the doc, and then spent an hour and a half on tumblr. I may just default on this challenge and say sod it to the fic. I'm beginning to think that if I *actually* wanted to write it, I would have been working on it rather than procrastinating at this point :-(

A lot of my old LJ friends have moved to Tumblr so I'm sad not to see them on my flist them anymore and occasionally stalk their tumblrs and steal awesome staff like what's on this post. But what I miss is what people don't do in tumblr (understandably because of the format) is the posts about every day and real life stuff.

Yeah, I've been avoiding all kinds of fic challenges or exhanges because I just can't commit to deadlines at the moment. Did you end up defaulting?

LJ is definitely more friendly for RL posts and stuff, especially with the friends lock and custom friends groups, for those posts that you want to share with people you know well, but don't want the world and their hamster to know about!

Amazingly, I actually managed to finish the fic and did not default. To be fair, I finished the fic at about 2.00am this morning, and was posting it at about 4.00am this morning, and the perfectionist in me is utterly horrified at how little proof reading and editing I've done to it, but I got it posted in time for the deadline.

But still, very impressed with you for finishig the fic! My writing mojo has been notable in its absence lately so...

I am hoping this leaves us one step closer to BRYAN FULLER'S GOOD OMENS. He's working with Neil on American Gods right now, and OMG PLEASE MAKE IT HAPPEN, WORLD.

I have mentioned that I have a lot of feelings about Hannibal, right :)?

Interesting, interesting. Internet tells me he's also working on a new Star Trek series. Alas, I have largely negative feelings about any shows centred on serial killers so I've never watched Hannibal (see also my aversion to Dexter and Criminal Minds) though I can appreciate the brilliance of the writing. Should be interesting regardless who ends up working on the series.

I will mention that Hannibal is entirely a different sort of television show that happens to SORT OF be about serial killers. It's far darker, more operatic, and less moralizing, and quickly breaks free of the idea of PROCEDURAL to turn into a twisted queer love story. I can't believe they got this on American television.

(It's also my favorite piece of media of all time, so I'm a bit too close for perspective.)

It sounds fascinating. And like nothing I really want to watch, at least right now. I think it's at least a partly a reflection of what I teach but my media consumption tends to exclude a lot of gritty/realistic/dark/twisted type of things. A cop show like Grimm is great, because while it gets dark, the supernatural elements keep it in fiction. I'm still watching H50 that started as shiny and bright, but have become increasingly intolerant of it because the repeated violation of human rights and procedure. I both love and hate a lot of Stargate series now because the older I get, the more disturbed by the US-cenric worldview I become and so on.

I can on occasion write the twisted queer serial killer love story (for reference: http://archiveofourown.org/works/2538593) but I don't really want to watch version of it, I need something that breaks away from stuff I teach more if that makes sense.

The older I get, the more I respect the dark/twisted/gritty realism part. I get frustrated at the "light procedural" shows that put them through hell for 45 minutes a few times a season only to have them bounce back and be perfectly back to normal the next day.

It's one of the things I responded to in Person of Interest - they accumulate and honor their damage.

Also, dear god, the police procedure violations in Hawaii 5O drive me crazy. Their conviction rate must be ZERO, if they ever have a suspect left to bring in! NONE OF THIS IS ADMISSIBLE!

(Hannibal is definitely NOT FOR MOST PEOPLE! I am amazed that a million people went on that journey with me to begin with!)

Oh I can definitely relate to your first thing and I happen to love POI. And yeah, that's pretty much my rant about H50. At this point I'm mostly watching it for shots of Chin on a motorbike </ shallow>

Mostly, Bryan is a nerd, a fellow fanperson, a gay man committed to queering the male gaze of television, and is currently working with Neil Gaiman :) I think he'd bring a lot to Good Omens

Thanks for sharing :) I will read the first one on the way to school a little later. I have some thoughts about this actually, that have been jumping around in my head lately. Maybe I will be able to get something down on paper too.

Hope your day is a good one :D

I found it to be a great read that nicely articulated a lot of my feelings on this. When LJ started getting quiter I had a number of flister who 'left the fandom', with the kind of posts of 'oh I've grown up and gotten over these things and moving on' and it just really puzzled and annoyed me, the implications.

Working from home today mostly, okay day.

They both look awesome, and it's great to see them together. I always found Gabrielle more attractive of the two I must say, but then she is more my type :D

Lol yeah, there sure was a few orgasm charts there where I went 'uh huh yeah, exactly so' :D

They do indeed, but it's jarring because they made Lucy up to look more rugged and ragged in AoS i n he second series, and she's actually very fresh faced.

*snorts* Me too!!

That first article struck a chord!!
The felt dragons are beautiful - I must not tell my daughter about them because they are far too expensive for casual purchase - even though I appreciate the work that has gone into them and hope the creator does get purchasers.
I love the music 'breakdown'!!

It stuck a chord with me too!

Yeah, the felt dragon are adorable and I want to cuddle them all. Judging by the creators 'sold' gallery there are willing customers a plenty.

Heh, the music breakdown chart seemed very accurate.

p.s. the community header graphics are going to the list for next weekend so I haven't forgotten about them. Did you have a size in mind; I usually go for 500x700 for headers which the approx size of mine... Would that be okay?

Oh, cool! You know, I actually thought about this the other day; I was having a brain fart and I couldn't remember if I'd dropped the ball again and forgot to send you the photos. o_O

I compared your journal style to the style at the DW comm (http://outside-the-mcu.dreamwidth.org/) and it would appear to me that the banner would need to be slightly wider than the one you use here. But that's coming from someone who knows fuck all about graphics, so . . . Thanks again!

on 2016-05-06 06:10 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] kat-lair.livejournal.com
Wider is better because there are a lot of pics to fit in. I'm probably going to go something with discrete boxes rather than very blended. And something in the colour scheme that fits the comm layout. Something's come up for Saturday but I'll hope to veg in front of TV on Sunday and play with this then.

I don't know if I made it clear that you don't have to fit all of them in (aside from the ones I mentioned as being vital to my existence *g*), I just wanted to give you options.
