“Are you doing that on purpose?”
“What?” Mikey’s expression is innocent but his eyes glitter like blood diamonds.
“That.” Mikey licks a slow stripe along his ice-cream cone, tongue gathering melting vanilla. The bottom of Gerard’s stomach tightens.
“And what would you do about it? If I were?” It waivers; a challenge, thick with want.
They’ve been dancing around this for a while. And in the end, it’s something as simple as an unseasonably hot day and a sweet treat from the freezer that tips them over. Gerard tosses his own half-eaten ice-cream to the side.
Mikey’s will taste sweeter.
