“Take a bite.” Gretel is holding out an apple, its skin gleaming red, marred only by the neat circle of her teeth. “It’s good.” Her lips are shiny with juice and somehow redder than the apple. “Sweet.”
On the trigger of the crossbow, Hansel’s finger trembles. His mouth is wet and empty. The air smells of cider, cloudy and intoxicating. He can taste it. He can taste her.
With a blink of an eye, she’s next to him, the weapon in his hand useless. It always was.
“Please.” Gretel brings the apple to his mouth. “For me.”
Hansel bites down.
