Today's post is 6 random fic recs from 6 different fandoms, selected by a highly scientific method of going through my AO3 history.
we'd be good, we'd be great (BTS, Jeon Jungkook/Kim Taehyung + background pairings, College/University AU, M, 25k) An absolutely lovely stroll through the 'friends to lovers' and 'omg they were roommates' tropes. Jungkook has been waiting for his 21st birthday because Tae once (casually and not without realising it) implied that that was the magical age he would stop seeing Kookie as this gawky kid he once took under his wing. Jungkook has a plan and a lot of advice from his other hyungs on how to romance and seduce Tae's socks off (and, like, other clothes too) and he's executing it with grim determination. Tae has... no fucking clue what is happening but he is... not unaffected. Alternating pov, mutual pining, misunderstandings, idiots in love, long-suffering friends etc. This is a total comfort read and really well written. Also, bonus points for extensive use of text conversations which I love because I'm a bitch for epistolary fic and that counts.
the monsters turned out to be just trees (Stray Kids, Bang Chan/Lee Felix, Canon Compliant, M, 13k) Ahhh this is hands down one of my fave fics for this pairing (which is maybe my fave of all the possible combos). Chan and Felix definitely have more than friendship feelings for each other and they even kind of know that it's mutual but they are Nobly Denying Themselves for the Good of the Group. Except, the group is fucking sick and tired of being caught in the middle of all that sad tinted sexual tension and basically tell them to resolve or they won't sign the renewal contract. Chan's characterisation here feels like so accurate, like he seems like exactly the kind of guy who would do this kind of self-sacrificing shit even when no one asked him and then have a breakdown when he realises he can get everything he wants. The confrontation with him and Felix is *chef's kiss* and everyone is absolutely hilarious but also loves them so much. I love this fic.
One Prize I'd Cheat to Win (Guardian, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, Modern AU, T, 7k) Ye Zun is determined to find his brother a partner, except before he gets to that his idiot brother latches onto this bad boy cop and it's kind of downhill from there. Or maybe uphill, all things considered. Lovely sibling relationship and backstory of how Shen Wei originally met Zhao Yunlan. Hilarious Ye Zun pov.
Felt Like A Lie (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), Katy Chen/Shang-Chi, M, 7k) This was a MCU movie I actually enjoyed, plus I love Awkwafina and Katy so... Post-canon, friends to lovers, mutual pining. Turns out the rent is still due even if save the world and Shaun and Katy get new jobs and adjust to the newly expanding shape of their relationship. Lovely, funny and touching in turn, very in character.
Left (Sherlock (BBC), Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Magical Realism AU, M, 45k) A really interesting AU where most of the population if right-handed and all right-handed people have 'knacks', something they are uncannily good at, and left-handed have none. John's a leftie, ergo he doesn't have a knack. Except. Great plot, great action, great emotion, hot af in between that. A very satisfying read.
A Gradual Act of Arson (Hockey RPF, Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin, E, 94k) - Listen, do I care about hockey? No. Do I even watch hockey? Only like when Finland happens to be in the fight for top spot (which incidentally happened like twice this year lol). Do I even know what these people look like? Also no. I absolutely read Hockey RPF though, in large part because that fandom produces some of the best BDSM AU fics which are like crack to me. This, as it happens, actually isn't one. It is however an arranged marriage fic with 94k of slow burn and some cultural differences and, my esteemed humans, I am HERE for it. All I can say that if you enjoy this trope, you will enjoy this fic, without any need to know who anyone is.
