Writing done. Writing to discuss.

Hah! I am DONE with the long MA assignment (except for ref checks and appendices but pfft) and because almost all the note-taking has been completed for the two shorter ones I'm pretty much at least 70% with all the MA assignments. Unless they come back with major revisions from tutors... *crosses fingers*
To celebrate and help my brain relax, I thought I'd do the Grill the Writer Meme again, just in case someone has questions.
Ask a question about my writing and I'll try to answer it:
1) What I was thinking at the time I wrote a story/series or a question about my writing as a whole. It can be absolutely anything including about my WIPs. (I don't post WIPs, but I guess you can ask about them in general re fandoms or pairings or quotes, idk)
2) Pick a character/pairing I've written and I will explain thetop five some ideas, concepts, etc. I try to keep in mind while writing that character/pairing.
3) Quote a few lines from something I've written and I'll comment on them.
4) At AO3 I have posted xx works. Pick a number from 1 (the most recent) to xx (the first story I posted there) and I'll tell you three things I currently like about the story. IDK why this is so complicated a question and also, as much as I love AO3, the casual assumption that everyone posts fics there is annoying. Well. I do post most of my fics there. But not all, e.g. none of the
unmarked_place stuff is there because of reasons. Anyway, rather than play with numbers, why not just randomly select a story and then I can tell you some things about it. Probably not 3 and probably not why I like it. But things.
Oh yeah, you can find my fics via LJ Masterlist or via AO3.

2) John, Sam, Dean?
Take or discard any of this, as you wish.

on 2014-07-30 09:58 pm (UTC)Full Tang - Dark fic is like bdsm and switching for me: I happily do a lot of things to others (write) that I wouldn't want done to me (read) unless I really, really trust the author (play partner). Well, the metaphor ends there though because I don't actually write that much dark fic at all :D However, when I do I really enjoy it. This fic started as a quite simple idea and was only going to a short ficlet but then grew into something a bit longer because I wanted to kind of explore that dynamic more. There's particularly that ambivalence of consent there that interests me; you could say that Dean consents, even initiates, what's going on here but then again, how much choice does he really has? Or, how much choice does he believe he has? Is he essentially lying to Sam here by indicating consent when it isn't clear if it's freely given... Idk, it's all just shades of grey and messy and that's what appealed to me. Also, from a shallow pov, Sam with a knife and Dean with the marks. Mmmm. :D
2) Sam & Dean (I haven't written John a lot so I'll skip him) - that's such a complicated, painful, unhealthy, essential, bone-deep relationship and I think that's the main concept for me; that everything is complicated and layered, even the good bits, even the love.

Interesting!
the metaphor ends there though
:-)

Yesyes! That was interesting!
And from a more shallow pov, Dean waiting for permission, and his realization that that might be his reason(self awareness is hot). Dean's bared throat. Sam's control of the knife in the slippery sweat. "it feels nothing so much like release, bright and pure like no Winchester has ever been".All that want and not want flying around.
Sam and Dean -

on 2014-07-30 10:07 pm (UTC)1. Do you only write fanfiction or do also write original fiction and or academic work? And do you write stories in Finnish also?
2. Grimm/Monroe

on 2014-07-30 10:36 pm (UTC)1) Yes I write both original fic and academic work. At the moment though, a lot of the original fic is kind of fanfic with serial numbers filed off type of stuff; aus in what are essentially small or non-existing fandoms, although there are a couple of completely original stories too. These tend to be co-written with
My academic work tends to me assignments towards my MA, journal article drafts out of my PhD, report that I should be writing out of some research colleague and I did... stuff like that.
I also write poetry, mostly in English and very occasionally in Finnish. That tends to be the only Finnish writing I do nowadays unfortunately. Poetry can all be found at
2) Damn, I really need to a) watch season 3 and b) finish that damn trilogy! This pairing appeals to me immensely because it has the 'from friends to lovers' (this is my all time bulletproof trope) AND the power dynamics (second on the list of favourite themes) potential. Plus everything about werewolf/wolf lore/reality that you think to use! I really love the hierarchical society potential of wolves with everything that implies. When I write them I try to keep those things in mind, that Monroe comes essentially from a different culture, a Wesen and Blutbad one, from Nick and there in potential for misunderstandings on both sides.
One of my head-canon things for this pairing is that if power dynamics come into play, it's Monroe who'll be the more dominant one. I can understand the reasoning for a switched take on that but I just can't feel it as strongly that way.

on 2014-08-01 01:04 pm (UTC)I probably should have figured this out, but what is your academic field?
We’re very much in agreement what concerns Nick/Monroe. Friends to lovers is pretty much a bulletproof trope for me as well and I do tend to lean towards stories that portray an unevenness somehow, be it power or something else. And the fact that they do come from different cultures is an interesting factor and I love the moments on the show when this is showcased. I never seem to be fixed on my take of who would be dominant or who would top, I just simply don’t care about that and will read stories with both takes.

I have finally managed to catch up with s3 of Sherlock so Grimm catch up is next on the line; after I'm back from Finland (mum's internet is veeeeeeeery slow)

no subject
on 2014-07-31 05:47 pm (UTC)Oh man Jack/Ianto... This is a pairing that I actually feel I've said all I can in the single long fic I wrote about them which wrung me out emotionally: the odds are there to beat (http://kat-lair.livejournal.com/247387.html). I don't think I'll ever go back to that pairing, at least not in a serious way. The main thing for me about them is that this is a couple who did their best to live in the moment, to be happy with what they had, what time they had. And that's an important, hard, lesson for everyone.

on 2014-07-31 05:50 pm (UTC)Brendon/Jon/Tom as a relationship/proto-relationship (from Access All Areas) - what prompted that particular rare mix-up for you? I had (still have, really) an unreasonably strong fondness for that relationship as you wrote it which I've never been able to understand myself.
(Also, kudos on your MA awesomeness)
