SPN 2.10 Hunted

kat_lairsugaration wanted an excuse to squee over the latest Supernatural episode. And I know several other people have succumbed to the seductive sin of Sam and Dean.Hence. Thusly. And Therefore. Here are my long rambly reactions and unabashed , uncritical flailing. Coherency is underrated. Beware of the spoilers.
White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane on the background of the opening scene where Scott talks to psychiatrist.... Genius. Creepy as fuck.
We return to the boys were we left them at the end of 2.09 Croatoan: sipping beers and having a long overdue heart-to-heart. Only, because they're Winchesters, it's more like raw, barely restrained emotion, and ANGST, and more pretty than you can shake a shotgun at.
The big secret was a bit of cop-off. Because we still don't know if Sam is in fact a demon-spawn. Instead we find out that John told Dean he might have to kill Sam if he couldn't save him (presumably from turning into a psycho-killer). Uh-huh.
a) 99% of the fandom already guessed this was pretty much what he'd said
b) John did not only do a really shitty thing by putting Dean in that situation, but showed a true lack of understanding his son(s), because it's pretty fucking clear that
c) Dean would never kill Sam. I don't believe he would do it even if Sam turned evil. In Croatoan we saw what will happen if Sam ever gets taken out of the game; Dean will just give up and GO DOWN WITH THE SHIP. For Dean it's not black-and-white anymore. It's not even shades of grey. It's just Sam. And the rest of the world can go fuck itself.
So, in light of this, this "revelation" doesn't really shake me much. There's no way I buy Dean having any angst about whether he's going to kill his brother or not. It's a moot question
Anyway, rant over. On with the show.
Let's just say that this whole scene killed me dead. Dean's face! With that little lip-curl of inside-my-hear-is-breaking. And Dean BEGGING! OMG I melted like butter on a frying pan, I really did.
Also, how much do I love it that he uses "Sammy" when things get emotional? A lot. And holy God, did Sam/JP just get taller and wider? That's some serious shoulder span there people.
Yeah. I had to pause the player for a while after that scene until I stopped hyperventilating and climbed back on the sofa. On the side note, I made my partner watch this scene (emotional porn needs to be shared, even if it is with unwilling participants) and he made two observations: 1) they're supposed to be brothers? and 2) this was so sincere it killed parody. *sniggers*
Then we had the vision. Which wasn't Sam's vision, but Ava's. Only, I didn't even catch on to the fact that it was a vision (until Sam was blown to smithereens that is, and I could really have done without that blood splatter) and just kept groaning over Sam's emo "I will runaway from home like a martyr that I am".
But. Competency-kink! How hot was he stealing the car? So very, very hot.
Sam goes to the Roadhouse and turns into world's largest and cutest puppy in front of Ellen. Sweet.
Also, when Ellen asks "What's going on between you two?" referring to Sam and Dean, Sam just goes through some really interesting facial expressions before completely and utterly changing the subject. Just saying... *pervs*
Jo's buggered off to become a proper hunter. This instantly made her more appealing to me.
Ash, aka Dr. Badass, is still awesome. Him casually swiping Sam's beer after he's gone is never not funny.
Ava! I liked her. She looks and sounds very sweet and normal. And I quite enjoy the interplay between her and Sam.
And Ellen gives Sam up in a heartbeat! Yay! Very in character. Also, oh Dean, who's clearly been doing nothing but driving around for days and calling every contact he can think of to find Sam.
The scene with Ava in the therapist's office is really funny. And her little: "I just helped you to steal some dead guy's confidential psych files. I'm awesome!" *GLEE*
Dean drives onto the motel parking lot, sees Sam through the window.
Dean: "Thank god you're okay."
Sam moves, Dean sees Ava through the window too.
Dean: "You're better than okay. Sa-a-a-m, you sly dog."
He's clearly down with watching some of that *gg*
Shots being fired. GORDON'S BACK ZOMG! And so much yay for some fucking continuity. Loved Dean wailing on him "You do that to my brother, I'll kill you!" Although Gordon gets the upper hand too easily here. But then again Dean's been driving around without sleep and sick with worry for days now. That's the explanation I'm sticking to.
Sam spouts off some detail about the discarded ammo shells.
Ava: *gapes* Du-u-ude!
Sam: "Er, I, uh, watched a lot of T.J. Hooker"
ahahahaa! the most unconvincing cover-up ever!
OMG CODEWORDS! FUNKY-TOWN. "He thought of it" ahahaha, of course he did.
I love it to bits when the little details of their fucked-up outside-the-law, beyond-normal life are revealed. Plans and codewords and back-up plans and ways to find each other when they're separated... It s hot like a burn of a thousand suns.
Sidenote: I cannot get over how broad JP's chest is. Honest to god, you could lay a picnic on that chest. Wait. His chest is the freaking picnic. I'll have me some that for every meal.
Dean's angst when he's tied to the chair, unable to do anything but wait... It's a beautiful, beautiful thing.
And then when the grenades go off and Dean goes a bit nuts in the chair, looking like someone's ripping the heart from his chest. *swoons*
Sam with a gun is disturbingly hot. Sam beating Gordon to pulp is even more so. And then "It's Sam." That's right Gordon old boy, there's only one person alive who can call him Sammy and it sure ain't you.
Oh god... After Sam unties him, Dean can't get his hands on his baby brother fast enough. And the THUMB CARESS OF FORBIDDEN LOVE. erm. Well, you know. *flails* Also the way Sam grabs Dean by his jacket. Because I'm a giant obsessive perv.
ahahahaa, Sam's anonymous tip!
Dean: "You're a fine and upstanding citizen, Sam."
Gordon't bitch-face promises retribution...
Am I the only one that finds it interesting that Dean is making that call to Ellen from outside the car. Because there was no real reason to do that. Unless he just wanted to be out of Sam's hearing range when he looses it just a bit with Ellen, about how Sam was almost killed...
The entire conversation in the car, finished off what little was left of me after the episode. Amsterdam! "Screw the job!" Sam thanking Dean. Bitch! Jerk! Sam's blinding smile! *dies*
The ending... I'm confused. Is Ava's engagement ring supposed to be a sign that she's been abducted by the demon or that she's gone over to the darkside and killed her fiancee herself.
Generally... Look. I know the episode wasn't perfect. I know that the show isn't perfect. I am, however, finding it very hard to gain any sort of critical distance from it. It's just... Oh Boys. And their pretty, pretty, emotional porn. This show is like fangirl crack. And I'm happily addicted. *goes of to read and write some wincest*

Ava! I liked her. - I did too. I liked the mix of kooky and freaked out, and Sam and Ava had some lovely chemistry going on. I really do hope they bring her back - I suppose after that ending it's obvious they will.
Also, SPN writers, Ava? That's how you write a convincing female character. Jo? Yeah, not so much. How glad am I that's she faffed off, hopefully for the entire season.

Like say... maybe she was the one who sold out Sam. Maybe she's going to side up with the Gordons of the hunting community and go after the psychics? Maybe she'll (attempt to) seduce Dean in order to get close enough to Sam to kill him. Now, that would be worth watching.
JA does subtle heartbreak like no one else. He killed me in the "Sam, I'm begging you." scene. Really, really did.
