Summary: The dream demands a price.
Author notes: This is the first of the
fandomtrees fics I wrote. I really dig Dreamcatcher but I wouldn't call myself as being in the fandom... However,
miss_ingno's request was to go with the MV AU which made it less intimidating to have a go! And if you're not familiar, this is the MV in question. Title from the song lyrics
fallen/saved on AO3
The dream demands a price. Yoohyeon sits on the throne and pays it. Yoohyeon kneels on the floor and takes it. Yoohyeon sleeps under the blue roses and the red blood, Yoohyeon picks up the sword, again and again and again because the dream does not end.
She does it all to ensure the dream doesn’t end. So that she doesn’t.
It’s not all bad. There are parts in between with friends and laughter, with feasts and pretty dresses, with purpose that drives her to overrule, and then another that drives her to overthrow.
And then there’s Jiu.
Jiu who slides into the last free seat next to her, Jiu who smiles like she has a secret and that secret is Yoohyeon, Jiu who says ‘your majesty’ and means ‘darling’ (and then later, ‘traitor’ except the meaning is still the same). There is Jiu who is the first (always the first, every time, the first) to wrap Yoohyeon’s hands around the hilt of the sword, to guide her arms just so, adjusting her stance for stability, for maximum force.
In a way, the good parts outweigh the… other ones. There are more of them. They last longer. They come again, and again, as long as Yoohyeon keeps paying the price, keeps collecting it. And every time Yoohyeon remembers, she makes the decision to do so, to carry on.
Sometimes, in the long seconds between the sword and her throat, between the sword and Jiu’s back, she wonders if Jiu does too. If she’s choosing the same as Yoohyeon. If she’s choosing anything at all, or if it’s all Yoohyeon, doing it for the both of them.
She never asks, not because she’s afraid of the answer, or doesn’t care. Yoohyeon cares.
Just not enough to risk losing what she has.
