Halloween Pride on AO3
“Mercedes…” Destiny trails off, looking at the rainbow capes; progress pride flags sewn onto a shimmering fabric matching the three fairy godmother dresses Mercedes – who had discovered a passion for sewing during her pregnancy – has made. “What…?”
Mercedes, already dressed like a queen in her own gown and also wearing a cape with the pride flag, looks chagrined. “Look. I’m sorry I didn’t ask,” she says. “And truly, if you don’t want to, you don’t have to, I didn’t think… It’s just, we…” She glances at Annabelle pleadingly.
Annabelle’s eyes are wide and welling up. “Oh my god,” she says. “We’re like… outing you without your consent, aren’t we?” She sounds horrified. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry! We…”
Ramona, who had been silently eyeing the outfits, interrupts her with a hug. “Hey, hey, hush now.” She looks at Destiny over Annabelle’s shoulder for confirmation. “We’re not mad,” she says, pulling off so she can address Mercedes too. “We’re just…”
“Surprised,” Destiny finishes. “And, well… Are you sure you want us to wear these around here?”
Mercedes, Dragon and baby Blake are living in what is almost the suburbs now. It’s still N.Y. so diverse enough that none of them stand out too much, but this is a different type of visibility to what she and Ramona have dealt with all their lives and…
Mercedes’ chin juts up. “Listen,” she says. “If any of my neighbours shun trick or treaters because of this,” she holds her cape out, “then we’d rather know about it. Makes it easier to avoid those bigots in the future.”
“Screw avoidance,” Annabelle says. “We’ll go and egg their houses later.”
A wave of love rises up within her, fast and fierce, leaving Destiny blinking back tears as she looks at her sisters. She reaches out a hand and finds three others grabbing it, Ramona’s other arm wrapping around her waist.
“You ladies ready yet?” Dragon’s voice comes from the other end of the house. “The kids are gonna vibrate out of their skins if we don’t go soon!”
“Be right there!” Ramona shouts back and snags one of the capes, pulling it over her shoulders.
They are quite a sight when they file out and onto the streets, lined up with pumpkins and lanterns. Mercedes and Dragon are dressed as queen and king, their precious little prince sporting his own felt crown in a pram decorated to look like a royal carriage. Lily – the only one really in the trick or treat age bracket – is wearing iridescent fairy wings and a wand with a rainbow at the end. Juliet, who has – much to Ramona’s puzzlement and Destiny’s amusement – gone full goth, is playing the part of Lily’s ‘demonic guardian’. Her all black ensemble is adorned with badges, from Black Lives Matter to Protect Trans Lives to Extinction Rebellion. And then there are Annabelle, Ramona and Destiny, Blake’s fabulous fairy godmothers, all beautiful and proud and unapologetic.
Destiny holds Ramona’s hand all evening, her heart full, happiness diffusing every cell in her body. This is how she wants to spend every Halloween, every Christmas, every single holiday and celebration, big or small; free from fear and surrounded by her family.
