dance me through the curtains (that our kisses have outworn) on AO3
The ballroom is full of moonlight and shadows, music drifting in from somewhere, faint and crackly as if from an old record player. In the middle of it, Bruno is moving slowly, his steps smooth as he glides through a waltz, his arms empty of a partner but his posture perfect regardless.
He looks younger like this, features smoothed, smile serene. By the door, Craig presses a hand against his chest, against the familiar pang of loss that hasn't lessened no matter how much time passes. One of these years his heart will simply give out and he'll join Bruno in this dance permanently, not just for a night when the veil is at its thinnest.
"There you are, love," Bruno says. "I've been waiting." Three beautiful turns and he's in front of Craig, hand extended in invitation. "May I have this dance?" he asks, an old joke between them that Craig responds to on instinct.
"Always." He takes Bruno's hands and lets himself be pulled onto the floor. The light turns golden, and the other dancers come to focus, the ballroom full of couples of all ages, all periods, each dancing to their own song. Craig can feel the way his body grows stronger, spine straightening, the ache in his bad hip gone like it was never there.
They waltz around and around, love in every step, undiminished by grief, moving together easily with practice of a lifetime.
And beyond.
