kat_lairSo. I saved the episode until after work today as a reward for myself. I was already quite hyped about it, for I had been reliably informed by sugaration that there would a significant MOMENT. And that this MOMENT would be exponentially better than last week's THUMB CARESS OF FORBIDDEN LOVE. Could such a thing really exist? (Why yes, I will be using a lot of CAPS in this here review. You can either deal or move along.)
I pressed play with baited breath. And lo, it was good. Reactions and meta under the cut.
Rehash of last week, Dean's emo still the prettiest.
Haunted Hotel! Bring on the Shining homage!
Ooh, creepy kids. And creepy dolls! ZOMG dolls that move! aaaaaaand apparently commit suicide (dollcide?) by hurtling themselves down the stairs. No wait, it killed he moving man! And ugh, that twisted neck is gruesome.
Oh Boys! Sam's looking for Ava (yay for continuity) while Dean's tackling along with the quest because it's important to Sam.
ahahaaa The patented Sam Winchester way "angst, droopy music and staring out of rainy windows... Yeah, I'll shut up now."
A month? They're skipping ahead a whole month? And they're going the "Ava got kidnapped by the demon" route? I'm still thinking she might have just gone darkside...
Dean: Wow. That attitude is just way too healthy for me. I'm officially uncomfortable now, thank you.
Don't you just love how the ROCK kicks in when the Metallicar comes cruising around the curve? *glee*
Dean's utter joy about the old skool Haunted House... "Might even run into Fred and Daphne while we're in there... Mmmmm, Daphne. Love her." LMAO Oh Dean, you're such a perv.
Dean: "Don't you think this place is a bit too... whitemeat for hoodoo?" *snigger*
Okay. The other little girl (Maggie) is actually a ghost right? And we see her only because Tyler does? Am I right?
And yessugaration, then there was MUCH FLAILING. Because AHAHAHAA, antiquing and you looked the type and Kingsize bed. (fanfic cliche #158) And OMG Dean's face! And look how Sam is the one doing all the protesting while Dean just sort of freezes, completely lost for words. And that seems very out-of-character, because if this was nothing, then surely he would be ready with a wisecrack? But instead we just get this fake smile and "Why do you say we look the type?" Interesting...
And Dean, having to tip the old guy, probably for the first time in his life.
Dean: "The most troubling question is, why do these people keep thinking we're gay."
Sam: "Well, you're kind of butch. But I think you're overcompensating."
Now this was funny. But. Dean's face, and his eyes during and after this exchange? Not funny. The way they kind of fleet up and around Sam, but not really daring to look, avoiding direct eye-contact. And that smile was ten kinds of fake.
On a shallow side note: See how JA and JP can't properly walk side by side down that hallway, because their shoulders/chests are just too damn wide to fit. *drools*
Oh Boys! I loved the whole doll-collection interplay between them, joking and trying to pull one over each other. Plus Sam's face was priceless! Playing dress-up on dolls, indeed! *wipes tears of laughter*
On the other hand, I'm thinking this is Dean trying to deflect Sam's attention away from his frankly uncharacteristic reaction to the whole gay couple-thing...
WTF, there's a creepy old lady in the attic? For real?
And wow, the dolls are creepy. Really, really are.
And oh. Oh oh oh. This is what you were talking aboutsugaration? Sam drunk! All uncoordinated and emo and making Dean promise something we all know he's never going to keep. Sam's red-rimmed eyes and desperation and Dean's "Don't ask that of me." And Sam PAWING AT DEAN'S FACE all broken and looking for something only his brother can give: safety and love unconditional and oh my poor heart .
On another shallow note: That little sliver of skin we see when Sam flops of the bed, tiny hint of hipbone and the small of his back. Is it wrong that I nearly wet my panties at the sight of it?
And there we have it people, homage to The Shining! A lovely atmospheric scene at the hotel bar.
Oh Sam, being sick in the toilet, while Dean razzes him (fanfic cliché # 285) and then Dean's "bet you don't remember anything from last night?" (fanfic cliché # 418) Also, Jaegermeister and Whisky and Tequila? Duuuude. Not cool.
Poke her with a stick? LMAO, Dean Winchester does not do sensitivity.

Sam rescuing Tyler! Pretty cool. The scene with Rose and Maggie... sad, and really quite creepy.
Aww, Sam got a hug! And of course he hadn't forgotten about Dean's promise. The boys seem to conduct most of their emotional exchanges either over the roof on the Impala (Bloodlust) or in it (Hunted)...
And why yes, we got the bit about how Rose became a little girl again and stayed behind as a spirit to be with her sister. And yes, sisters staying together forever, even after death? We got the parallels there too, no anvil necessary.
Overall... There was much squeeing and flailing yes. And emotional porn aplenty. The actual case seemed a bit blah, but visually it was lovely, muted grey-scale and shadows.
And yet... I dunno. The episode seemed kind of sad to on the whole, even Dean's jokes felt forced. It's like this whole "I might have to kill my brother if he turns to the darkside" thing is weighing so heavily on them, they can't shake it. And yet they refuse to really talk about either, not properly. Sam talks about it when he's angry or drunk. Dean would prefer never to mention it again. And it's difficult, because Dean can't do it, and yet Sam needs that ultimate safety net to be there, to know that if he fucks up Dean is there to pick up the pieces.
But this is quite selfish on Sam's part, although unconsciously so. Even after Croatoan, he still doesn't get it. I just don't think Sam really believes that were he to die, Dean would not be far behind. He'd take out whoever was responsible and quite possibly get killed during. If not, he'd just go after the meanest supernatural nasty he could think of, something that would be sure to finish the job. And, if he were the one responsible for Sam's death? Dude. There's only one way that would end. Dean would be dead before Sam's body grew cold, and I for one have no trouble believing that it would be by his own hand. But Sam doesn't really get this, doesn't yet understand just how deep this thing between them goes, and how utterly reliant Dean is on him. Sam might be able to go on his own (not perhaps live, but at least survive), but Dean's never made much of a secret of the fact that he can't do this alone, and is unwilling to even try.
*deep breath*
So. I dunno. Someone (not me) somewhere made this prediction about the season finale, and I think it's very plausible: Sam is going to go over to the darkside (if only temporarily) because something makes him utterly believe that Dean is dead, and that's the thing that pushes him over. This I can see. This I want to see.
