After utterly failing to do anything with [info]planetkiller’s original prompts for her birthday drabbles she threw me a bone and asked for some SGA.

She gets a ficlet, her preferred pairing.

Stargate Atlantis – Chuck/Kavanagh – PG – 466 words

Beginnings
(prompt: chocolate)

Chuck gets on well with everyone. As long as he remembers, he’s been that nice young man or a good guy or a fine employee with excellent people skills. He’s never resented any of those labels or the ones that got him on Atlantis (well-balanced, adaptable, high emotional IQ) and he’s never known anyone else to have a problem with them either.

So when he makes room for Dr. Kavanagh who’s come to perform maintenance on the gate console, it’s a bit of a shock when the other man turns to him with a contemptuous sneer. “Save your Mr. Nice Guy routine for someone who cares,” he says and in his mouth the word nice sounds like an insult.

Dr. Kavanagh doesn’t get on with anyone, nor does he seem to want to. If Chuck was a different sort of man, he would leave it at that and let the snappy scientists lie in peace or whatever the proverb of the week on Atlantis was.

However, the incident keeps bothering him. So much so, that he finds himself watching the other man; warily at first, but then with growing interest. And once he starts noticing he can’t stop, and the things he notices… well, they sort of accumulate until it feels like he’s full of secret knowledge and little snapshots of Dr. Kavanagh; his sweet tooth, his hands with their long narrow fingers dancing over a keyboard or under a console, how young he looks without his glasses, softer somehow.

Chuck starts saying hello every time he sees Dr. Kavanagh. It takes two weeks of how are yous until he gets more than a quick flicker of eyes in response. But then one evening they are both late for dinner, rounding the corner to the mess hall literally on each other’s heels.

Chuck is first in their line of two. There is only one piece of chocolate cake left and, well, it’s been a tiring day and he really wants it. But he kind of wants to see Dr. Kavanagh smile even more.

Chuck passes the cake by, opting for some furry Athosian fruit instead and finding an empty table. He watches Kavanagh pick up the slice and then hesitate, the tray held close to his chest. Finally he moves over to Chuck’s table.

“This seat free?” he asks, slowly, like he fully expects Chuck to tell him no, he would prefer the company of his invisible friends, thanks all the same.

“Yep,” Chuck says, nudging the chair out with his foot. “Sit down, Doc. How are you tonight?”

Kavanagh settles, fiddling with his napkin and placing it neatly in his lap. “I’m… I’m fine,” he says, looking up. It’s not quite a smile on his face, but it’s something. It’s a start. “How are you?”

Fin.

Sweet and schmoopy and I never thought I'd say that about Kavanagh.

I have no idea how you managed to make that not only strangely sweet but also absolutely work for me!

That would make two of us then. One of the great things about doing these birthday drabbles is that I end up writing pairings and genres I never would otherwise.

Anyway, very glad that this worked for you! Thanks for commenting!

I love how you´ve given two background characters a personality with so few words. Nicely done.

Thank you very much! The lovely thing about minor characters is that you're given an almost-blank canvas to work with... I'm glad you liked what I filled it with :)

Oh, how sweet!
I love that someone's writing Kavanagh - and so well! Also, Chuck! Yay! *cuddles Chuck for being so persistent*

Thank you! To be honest, I was only writing these two because [livejournal.com profile] planetkiller asked... But it turned out to be surprisingly fun! Glad you liked the fic!

Kavanagh! Yay! Chuck! Yay!

Kavanagh and Chuck together... well I never thought about it before, but Yay! Cause this is just too sweet not to make me love it.

Comment! Yay!

I never really thought about them together either but in the end it was surprisingly easy to write. I'm glad you liked it and took the time to tell me so, thank you very much!

YAY! Thank you so much! This is awesome and sweet and I love it and I love you. *hugs*

If you don't mind, I'm going to rec this at the comm. Because it is awesome and I can't *NOT* share it with someone.

*hugs back* Whew, Ii'm so glad you liked this. Never written either character before so... But at least I knew the fandom for this prompt *shifty eyes*

And wow, thanks for the rec! That's really awesome of you.

Hee. I'm queen of the random fandoms! It's like a super power, but far less interesting. And I still pimp Criminal Minds. I know you're a psychology person, but from what I understand, it's actually close to real life. They've a real ex-BAU person on the staff. And all my mam's ever actually complained about is that the real BAU is in the basement and on the show it's not.

Also:

and:

The power of the pretty compels you! :)

That's really awesome of you.
You say this now, but just wait until you are enudated with my minions fellow anons.

Hee! The power of the pretty is rather compelling. I am psychology person and I have to say that's usually the reason I stay away from programmes like this. Because I'm afraid that when they start doing the criminal profiling in the show I'll just end up hitting my head against a wall. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe that IRL offender profiling can be a useful tool for criminal investigations, it's just that there are flaws in the traditional FBI method that I'm unfortunately aware of (thanks for my background studies). Still, I don't think I've ever actually watched the show so this is all prejudice.

Ahahaha, I'm already flummoxed by the amount of comments this fic has received. I'm pretty sure I have you to blame/thank... Seriously, I never expected a rare pairing like this to be so popular but somehow all the Kavanagh and Chuck fans are coming out of the woodwork. Scary!

Fab-u-lous! I play Chuck in an RPG, and it worked out (quite unplanned) that Chuck and Kav became an item. Nice to see someone else play with that pairing, LOL.

*g*

Thank you so much! Hee, that's pretty funny about your RPG... Never considered this pairing but my f-list often makes me go into new fanfic directions...

This was all nice and sweet, even if I had to look up who Chuck is (if he's on screen with Sheppard or Ronon, I tend to forget to look that way), and Kavanagh is, well, Kavanagh.

Hee, thank you very much. I'm flattered that you took the time to read even when you weren't sure who the other character was!

Well, I'm trying to branch out *g*

It's just, well, he's Sheppard, and him doing things like breathing and walking gets me to make these soft happy noises in the back of my head. I don't quite understand it :D

OMG THIS IS MADE OF WIN!!!

Ahem. I mean, er, lovely ficlet, thanks. Seriously though, you have done an awesome job here, 'furry fruit' - damn, that Chuck is just tooo nice. I love the way it's a challenge to him to know Kavanagh better. That invisible friends line is brilliant :)

Oh wow, and here I was thinking that no one (besides [livejournal.com profile] planetkiller) would be interested in the pairing or the fic... Thank you so much for reading and leaving feedback, it means a lot.

Hee! Well, yeah, I know what you mean. But I wrote some Chuck/Kav a while back, and it's had more than a thousand views at Wraithbait, and a nomination in the SG fanfic awards, so I think it must be everyone's secret fave pair LOL
Your fic really made my day, and this line has had me all happy all day for some reason... Chuck is first in their line of two.

I'll shut up now.

Except maybe to say I will rec this at [livejournal.com profile] chuck_campbell if that's okay :)

=D

Hmph! Now you have me reading your fic, all distracted and curious and invested in a pairing that I didn't even know existed a few days ago...

Hee, thank you again! I'm really happy that my little ficlet has brought such unexpected joy... I should warn you though that quoting stuff at me makes me all squirmy and excitable...

And that's a silly question! Rec away if you want, I'd be flattered!

I'm biased, because I love Kavanagh, but this is a perfectly lovely fic any way you look at it. And really, honestly sweet, which, considering it's, well, Kavanagh, is very hard to achieve. Thank you for sharing this!

Nice - and all the nicer because normally , when we see the word 'chocolate' we expect Rodney. This brought alive the desires and motives of minor characters. I hope he got more than a smile eventually...

Sometimes it nice to write minor characters as it's a blank canvas to play with. Glad you liked! I'm sure chocolate cake and smiles lead to other things...
