Blueberry Harvest on AO3

“Here you go, Mr Frodo,” Sam says, putting down two baskets on the kitchen table.

“More?!” Frodo shakes his head in amazement, hands on his hips as he surveyed the bounty. “How are you even finding the time?”

“Ah, Mr Frodo, a few hours in the evenings, it’s nothing.” Sam waves his hand dismissively. “It’s been a good year.”

“Sam…” Today is the third time Sam had come by with baskets full of freshly picked blueberries. It has, most definitely, been a good season for them; just the right balance of rain and warmth, the constant hum of pollinators filling the spring forest.

That doesn’t mean that the harvesting is in anyway ‘nothing’. Blueberry picking takes time and clever fingers and patience lest you pick too much other things (leaves, twigs, curious insects) to make the cleaning tedious.

The blueberries Sam has brought him are perfect and could fetch a pretty penny at the market in Bree.

Frodo tells him as much.

Sam looks offended. “No, Mr Frodo, I’m not wanting for extra income! I picked these for you.”

Frodo has two working hands and has been thinking about going blueberry picking for a week now, but, well, there’s not much point when Sam carries the fruits of his labour straight to his kitchen.

“You are a treasure, Sam,” Frodo tells him, sincerely. “And I hope you know how much I appreciate these delicious berries,” he snags and handful and throws them into his mouth, “and you, of course.”

Before the quest, before Mordor, Frodo would have thought these things but not said them aloud. And Sam would have not let him, anyways. Now, he just blushes, pleased and proud. Frodo relates, it is a good look on his friend, one he is determined to put on Sam’s face as often as possible in the days they’re granted. There are, after all, so many more of them now than either of them thought on the slopes of Mount Doom.

“Well then,” Frodo says, clapping his hands briskly, “I guess one can never have enough blueberry jam.”

Sam laughs. “Wise words, Mr Frodo. Very wise.”

The blueberries make very nice jam indeed, on their own, and mixed with strawberries and raspberries too. The shelves in Frodo’s cellar are lined with jars of it. During the long, dark evenings of the winter, he and Sam eat the jam on pancakes, on porridge, as cake filling, smeared on toast and sometimes, just by the spoonful. Because life, when you have it, is made to be enjoyed to the fullest.

And everything tastes sweeter when shared with friends.
