Robin Hood 2.10 – Walkabout

It was a dark and stormy night in Nottingham... Um, what is the Sheriff doing? It looks a bit… um. He’s sporting silk pyjamas? In the Middle Ages? I… Wait, why am I surprised by this?

I really liked the nightmarish lighting and editing in the beginning. Worked well visually, genuinely creepy.

Guy is all disturbed by finding someone else in the Sheriff’s bed chambers. Also he totally walked in without knocking. Because clearly he does that all the time.

Oh Keith Allen, how are you so awesome? I didn’t stop laughing at him all episode.

Ahahaha, “What a pretty mouth you got.” The Sheriff almost gets raped by some random dude. Seriously, how do they get away with this stuff before the watershed?

The ongoing tooth-joke is never not funny.

Incidentally, Sherwood Forest seems very crowded. It’s practically teeming with people wandering around without any apparent purpose.

Guy shouting for Allan and being all toppy… nnnggghhhh. Oh Guy, you are such a pretty switch. No seriously, he is, watch him go from rage and take charge attitude with Alan and the guards to reluctantly asking for Robin’s help and to outright grovelling with Marian and later the Sheriff. It’s… mesmerising.

Allan/Guy interaction in this episode fills me with glee. They seem very comfortable somehow, like they’ve found their groove and know exactly what to expect from each other. Guy is also relying on Allan without a question here and Allan is not just obeying orders, he’s being proactive about helping Guy.

John with the goose and magic beans. Oh Much. He still needs that pet deer, but I guess goose will do in the meanwhile.

Allan! So hot in all black, sneaking into the secret lair. And the interaction between him and the gang… I… I kind of love this episode a whole lot already.

Oh Much’s face when Robin says he gave Marian the ring… *heart-clench*

Ooooh the tension between Robin and Guy. It makes my panties moist. I won’t lie.
Robin: “Ask.”
Guy: “What?”
Robin: “Ask me for my help.”

Guy refusing, but Marian persuading him and fkdgeahhjaeinmfkg’lk and oh my god, my buttons pls to keep pushing them, kthxbai.

Keith Allen’s maniacal grin is so amazing. Someone should like bottle that and sell it.

Much’s happy face about getting to go with Robin on a mission, just the two of them… My love for Much knows no bounds. NONE.

And Will being trusted with Marian’s life. He’s really becoming Robin’s 2IC, isn’t he? Just like Allan is Guy’s.

 

Oh Much… “Like good old days, back in the Holy Land.” And he’s fishing for information about the whole ring incident… And of course Robin tells that he did actually propose to Marian and that she said yes.

Robin: “This is where you’re supposed to say congra—“
Much: *wraps arms around Robin* “Congratulations.”

And I’m crying, because Much’s face. His heart is breaking, it’s breaking and he can’t, won’t let Robin see and oh my god Sam Troughton gets the balance in that scene just right. Te music on the background totally echoes Much’s feelings and there just isn’t any doubt canonically about where Much’s feelings for Robin lie because… It’s that kind of hurt you push aside because you love the other person so much that their happiness comes first even when it’s not with you, and god it cuts deep.

John sees the little people but not the bigger picture, in complete opposite to Robin. “Leaders can be wrong."

Jasper is just unpleasant. And Guy really cares about Nottingham.

Of course, the whole concept of an army coming to raid the town to the ground is ridiculous in the extreme. 

Oh John and your big heart.

Marian: “I’m not leaving you in trouble.”
Guy is so genuinely surprised and touched and he too breaks my heart in his own way. His love, so doomed.

Oooh Will and Allan scene finally! Allan is practically begging come back to Will the gang. I love how he brings up saving Will’s life last episode and Will can’t exactly deny that but he’s still so hurt by Allan’s betrayal… *clutches chest*  This episode is just determined to break my heart at every turn, isn’t it?

Much is worried what is going to happen to him once Robin and Marian get marrie, where he fits into the picture.

Allan defending Guy! I made a little fist-pump of GLEE here, because their-love-is-so-dysfunctional-yet-true.

Boy! I swear the writers troll the LJ for BDSM fic, I swear. Incidentally, this makes me want to write some. 

Forced marriage FTW!

It’s weird seeing Guy and Allan being all… heroic, defending the town, organising resistance. The scene is very reminiscent of LOTR i.e. the Battle of Helms Deep.

Allan giving Will a sword. Shaking hands! Oh the joy, possibility or reconciliation, lingering touches… *tears of joy*

Oh Much He wants to stay in the forest as a “lone outlaw” – Seriously, someone write this. He could be like… like The Phantom! If you know what I’m talking about we can bond over shared childhood memories of brief and cheesy comic book geekerdom.

Notice how Robin recognises the Sheriff’s silk pyjamas. From that time he crept into his bed chambers. God times, people, good times.

Marian you lucky girl, second proposal so soon. Oh Guy, kneeling (I do like seeing him on his knees… Well. I like seeing most people on their knees. Um.) his heart in his sleeve.

Much h/c! He’s waving Robin away all “go on without me”
Robin: “I like worrying about you.”
\o/\o/\o/ 

Um. That army just doesn’t look that threatening.

Much and Robin adventuring together is awesome and should happen every episode. Mainly because they tend to pause their adventuring regularly to have significant and emotionally charged conversations. 

Little John gets his ass kicked by little kids again.

Run Robin! Run Much! *waves arms excitedly*

Much: “Out of my kitchen!”
Ahahahaaaa! Do not mess with Much’s kitchen or Much will mess with your face.

OMG is Guy really running out on Marian?? 

I love the lighting in the scene between Guy and Jasper, the sunset is used for great dramatic effect and it really works.

Guy turns back! *victory arms*
Marian: “You came back!”
Guy: “I’d rather die than live without you by my side!”
Me: *swoons*

The Sheriff shouting at Jasper is awesome. He was so nasty and horrible I like to see him put in his place (which apparently is firmly under the Sheriff’s boot).

Well of course they got the pact back.

I loved Djaq’s little anecdote!

But again Will is not telling the others about Allan and how he was helpful and not evil. Bitter much?

Overall: I… I HAVE NOTHING BUT UNASHAMED LOVE FOR THIS EPISODE. Robin Hood, bringer of thought-free entertainment and ho-yay! Never, ever change.

Next time: MUCH! Getting punched in the face! Marian revelead as the Nightwatchman! Royalty! Aaaaah! Oh and public service announcement: I will be out next Saturday, rocking it up with my kinky red boots, so no episode review until Sunday.

I though the episode what rather exhilarating. I was all flail-and-squee.

Allan and Guy are just fascinating. I was sceptical of the whole Allan-betrays-the-outlaws concept to start with but it has turned so brilliantly in terms of character development. Not to mention the wholly unsubtle BDSM references. win-win.

That scene was soo Reminicient of Helms Deep it was unreal! Think about it: Marian was Eowyn, Guy was Aragorn, Much was Eomer and Sheriff (bizarrely) was Gandalf (i.e. old man who has the power to stop the Uruk-Hai -- I mean, Prince John's army-- destroying Nottingham. And Will was so Legolas - telling Marian that all these people are going to die. It's like living LOTR all over again. Which totally does not take from the awesomeness of that episode. I fully endorse your dissection of Much's characterisation. Especially the bit about "his heart is breaking, it’s breaking and he can’t, won’t let Robin see". That's exactly it. He's pretending to be all happy for Robin, because that's what he's supposed to do, Robin said he was supposed to congratulate him, but inside him something's a little bit more broken than before.

I love how he brings up saving Will’s life last episode and Will can’t exactly deny that but he’s still so hurt by Allan’s betrayal - this feeds back into my argument of "ways in which Will is like Robin". He views Allan's betrayal as exactly that -- a betrayal, stone cold, black-and-white, no discussion. Not just that, but I always got the feeling that Will and Robin were particularly hurt by Allan's betrayal. I wonder how much of Will's attitude has been gleaned from Robin, in that respect...

Your reviews are always fun, especially your little asides, which 99.9% of the time I totally agree with. You're usually the first to point out when Robin is being an asshat, or if Guy is being amusingly whipped, or if Marian has been shopping in accessorize again.

Much just wins seventy percent of this episode by being adorable and heartbreaking. I think Guy wins the other thirty percent because his love is just utterly, utterly doomed.

All the boys were breaking my heart. There was so much hoyay in this episode I think I pulled a muscle squeeing. Much/Robin, Allan/Will, Allan/Guy... It was an explosion of poorly disguised Greek love. Beeb, I approve.

Great review! I immediately thought of LOTR with the siege bit. I loved the Allan/Will scene and I feel so bad for Guy. Cause Marian is playing him and Allan is planning on getting back into the gang. He'll end up alone and lose any shred of humanity left. But until then, we can enjoy his awesomeness and poetic lines!

I think Will would forgive Allan before Robin would, but that could just be my opinion. Yes he was hurt and saw it as a personal betrayal, but Allan saved his life and it would do Will good to see a bit of grey now and again. Once he's convinced, he and Djaq could bring the rest of the gang around (well LJ, Much would follow Robin's lead). Group pressure.

Guy barging into the Sherrif's room, being "late", Jasper's weekly meetings that Guy isn't aware of, that scene with the Sherrif and the big dude in the forrest... No slash here folks!

Poor Much. I'm really loving him this season. And yay for episodes where people don't abuse Much! What is it- two in a row? Keep it up.

I'm afraid the only way for Allan to truly redeem himself would be to be killed. Or that Guy would sacrifice his life for Marian. I hate that redemption arcs normally end in death, I mean that's the easy way out ainn'it? You don't have to keep proving yourself, living with what you did. You do a good thing, die and everyone remembers you a hero. I think someone will die in the season finale, my money is on Guy or Allan and I'm leaning more towards Guy.

Yeah, Guy is getting shafted left right and centre (and not in the good way... although...) I'm so conflicted about Allan, because his interaction has been so awesome with Guy that I want that to continue but on the other hand I want joyous reunions with Will... Oh, the agony.

I agree about someone probably losing their life at the season finale... However, part of me is afraid it'll be Much, sacrifising his own life for Robin. God, just thinking about that makes me cry.

And I’m crying, because Much’s face. His heart is breaking, it’s breaking and he can’t, won’t let Robin see and oh my god Sam Troughton gets the balance in that scene just right. Te music on the background totally echoes Much’s feelings and there just isn’t any doubt canonically about where Much’s feelings for Robin lie because… It’s that kind of hurt you push aside because you love the other person so much that their happiness comes first even when it’s not with you, and god it cuts deep.

You have hit the nail on the head. Sam Troughton is brilliant. ♥

Much and Robin adventuring together is awesome and should happen every episode. Mainly because they tend to pause their adventuring regularly to have significant and emotionally charged conversations.
