Oh fuck you, 2016! George Michael was another one of those singers whose songs travelled with me from teenage years to adulthood, revealing whole new aspects as I grew up. Very sad to be waking up to the news of his passing this morning :(

I don't understand why 2016 was so lethal to entertainers. Then we got the news of the death of astronaut Piers Sellers - as he was a personal friend, that even overtook George Michael in the disaster stakes. We knew Piers had cancer but thought everything was on the way to being fixed.

Didn't know about Piers Sellers, but I read a couple of articles just now, seems like an inpirational guy. Very sorry about your loss of a friend :(

A paragliding friend of C's married one of twin sisters. Piers married the other.
We first met Piers when he and his wife came over from Houston for her twin's funeral (cancer) despite being in the midst of getting treatment for their older child (cancer - child is currently fine). We've stayed in touch and followed his career. He was a very charming and interesting guy. We were angry recently when Tim Peake was widely heralded as the first Brit astronaut. Piers was totally Brit but was forced to take US citizenship in order to qualify to go into space under whatever rules NASA were sticking to at the time.

Dual citizenship in the US is a complex issue and in most cases, as I understand it, people are forced to renounce their old citizenship... somehow telling of US mentality!

I saw and loved! I think George would have liked your story too!

The BBC can't really go by obituaries because they have stuff prepared for loads of people who then die at a comparatively ripe old age. This year's 'crop' all went before their 'expected' time.

Yeah, I think they acknowledged the flaws of the measuring system in the article if I remember correctly. It is the unexpectedness of many of these deaths that's really hitting people I think.
