Meme answers and other things

These are answers to yesterday's meme where I asked you to...
Name a character and I'll tell you three (or more) facts about them, from my own personal pseudo-canon.
Three things about Ash
1. Ash doesn’t smoke half as much pot as people think he does. At least not anymore. Not when he knows that any moment something really majorly bad and fucked-up could happen, and that extra second on your reaction times may end up being the only thing saving your life.
2. Ash was raised by his grandmother Elise, who was a fierce lady with a keen interest in baking and motor sports. Ash never knew his dad. His mom was fifteen when she left Ash with Elise and moved to
Those are also the times Ash still lights up, even at the risk of being too slow to duck out of the way if the Big Bad comes calling.
3. Elise died when Ash was seventeen, just after Ash had started at MIT. Ash flunked out after a year – not because he couldn’t do the work (because, dude, he could do it in his dreams with both hands tied up behind his back), but because he didn’t deal well with structure and held moral objections to the concept of deadlines and assignment specification.
Three things about Rodney McKay
1. This may be cheating, but my personal canon for Rodney’s background is pretty much summed up in Points of Origin.
2. Rodney wakes up at least three times every night. Sometimes it’s nightmares, sometimes it’s ideas that he has to write down straight away, sometimes it’s his headset coming to life with yet another emergency requiring his full and immediate attention. Sometimes it’s simply the need to pee that drives Rodney from his bed, stumbling to the bathroom in the middle of the night, his hand trailing the wall because to turn on the lights would be admitting that he’s actually awake.
Occasionally Rodney wakes up for no apparent reason at all; one second he’s fast asleep and the next he’s lying amidst the crumbled sheets, listening to his own even breaths and the crashing of waves from the outside. He likes those times the best. The five minutes it takes for him to slip under once more, is usually the most peaceful part of his day.
3. Rodney is ambidextrous, but he only utilises the skill when he is alone or when they’re in a middle of situation so dire that everyone is too busy averting a catastrophe to pay any attention to which hand the chief of science is using to save their collective asses.
It’s silly and perhaps ultimately futile, but Rodney feels that keeping it hidden gives him some sort of back-up superpower. If no one knows about it, they can’t take it away. Like if the Genii get him again, they might hack off his right hand thinking they’d crippled him, but they wouldn’t think to cut off both and therefore Rodney would win. It’s his insurance policy, an inadequate one to be sure, but he doesn’t have that many left.
Three things about Radek Zelenka
1. Radek lost someone very important during the Velvet Revolution. They didn’t die or anything (as it was a fairly bloodless upraising), but he lost them nevertheless, as painfully and irrevocably as if they had.
2. Radek actually speaks and understands English perfectly. Also Russian and German, and lately he’s been taking Japanese lessons from Miko. He retains his accent for a variety of reasons, not all of them clear to even himself. At first it was a bit of an in-joke for the crowd of one, and yeah sure, he knows that the ladies like it and he can usually score an extra pastry with his tea (no, he doesn’t drink coffee) from Marisa at the kitchens. The accent is an excuse, a protection, a permission, a way to stand out or to hide. It’s also a reminder, both to himself and to others, that being different isn’t always a bad thing. Out here, surrounded by Wraith and Replicators and Genii and thousand other hostile races, it can be difficult to remember that sometimes.
3. It’s true that Radek is the person to talk to about scoring some liquor in Atlantis, and it’s even true that he designed and started the distillery that operates in the level 9 biology lab C (the botanists are now running it themselves though, with some unexpected help from the two SAS guys with matching tattoos). Radek himself, however, only drinks very little and only occasionally. There was a period in his life, not long before he got recruited to the base in
Nowadays he let’s go in other ways.
