I don't have a Christmas icon for this...


Okay, folks, I watched Single All The Way, which is essentially Christmas fluff slash fic on screen. I watched it twice. Tags include: friends to lovers, oh my god they were roommates, fake boyfriends but only briefly, meddling family, the nieces ship it, blind date, Christmas fluff, amateur modelling, pining, there was only one bed, plants, children’s author. I would bet Any Money that the writer has scrolled through the m/m Christmas tag on AO3 for inspiration.

Objectively, it’s not a great movie. Some of the acting… is not great. The family investment in their son’s relationship status is So Weird. The Nativity pageant subplot is annoying. However. HOWEVER. Subjectively, this is everything I wanted right now. I have read hundreds of these fics and I will read hundreds more, and as these things go, this gave me visuals. The leading men do have chemistry and there are some genuinely cute moments between them, and Philemon Chambers as Nick does a great job with some subtle pining (or maybe it’s just because I’ve read all those fics I can fill all the internal monologue of ‘why is it never me’). The blind date actually ends up being a decent guy rather than an evil caricature which is nice. The movie also features Jennifer Coolidge, Kathy Najimy and Jennifer Robertson who are always incredibly watchable. Special mention to how much husbands love their wives in this, and how there is Zero Angst about the gay part of this gay romance. I would have written the Peter/Nick feelings reveal differently but it wasn’t bad. And also, no sex scene because you know, Christmas fluff on Netflix.

I admit that there’s a part of me that would like to write read fic of this done a bit better BUT I still enjoyed it immensely and genuinely hope this will be a first of many cliched movies in this vein because I Am Here For It.
