Author notes: For
goodbyebird's prompt of 'Bair & Egwene, patience' in in the 3.04 Episodic Prompt Meme over at
tar_valon. The prompt grabbed me by the throat in the middle of 18h travel during an airport layover.
Patience on AO3
She ripples like water, the air around her wavering, currents of her One Power shifting in and out of the Dream like the barrier isn't even there. Because for Egwene, it isn't. Bair watches her watching everyone, and never seeing the waves that carry her along, the way they push her high, pull her deep, twist around her, murky green, off-white like old bones, blue like Bair imagines an ocean to be, unbearably beautiful, unfathomably dangerous.
Egwene ripples like water, and Bair sees people will die for her as readily as they'll die for water, for a chance of a mouthful, a droplet on their upturned faces, their swollen tongues, bestowed like an unthinking mercy. If they are lucky, if the Wise Ones have the patience to let Egwene find her own stream and only direct when necessary, she may even realise it before too many lay their lives on the banks of her power. She may become a bridge as well as a raging river.
Without one, you can drown in a Dream and never wake up. Bair knows. She's seen it happen.
She fears she will see it again.
