“I’ll do it,” Patrick says when Pete asks him to join the band. “But there’s a price.”
“I’ll pay it.” Pete doesn’t ask what it is because it doesn’t matter. He needs Patrick and his voice and his music that breathes life to Pete’s lyrics, that makes his soul sing like nothing and no-one ever has.
“Deal.” Patrick grabs Pete’s hand, unfurls his fingers and presses a kiss against his palm. It burns like a branding iron, searing and welcome. “Sealed.”
Pete looks at the sigil on his flesh and laughs. The price of never being alone is worth paying.
