Crossing on AO3
I knew the moment he noticed me, his already grim face taking on that particular brand of stubbornness and rage that was doing his heart no good.
“No,” Dr Cox grunted between chest compressions, “Not today, Satan.”
I let it go. We’d had this chat before, he knew I wasn’t Satan. But everyone needed a coping mechanism.
Carla exchanged a look with another nurse but didn’t comment. I liked that about her. She took strange things in her stride. Like her husband.
I liked him too. I’d tell them both eventually, but not for a long time yet.
“He doesn’t give up, does he?” Mrs Layton commented. She sounded sad, but for Dr Cox, not herself.
On the table, her chest was still rising steadily, thanks to the ventilator.
“It’s what makes him a great doctor,” I answered. And a good person.
The look Dr Cox sent me would’ve frozen the blood in my veins, if I had such things. He saw Mrs Layton next to me and cursed soundly. Still, he didn’t stop.
“Will you tell him it’s okay? That it’s not his fault,” she asked. Her gaze was already focused on something beyond the room, something even I couldn’t see. I was only here to ease the transition, but most people didn’t actually need that much help. Some, like Mrs Layton, had been preparing for a long time.
“I will,” I promised. I was pretty sure Dr Cox could hear her too, his movements finally slowing down, shoulders rounding in defeat. I’d tell him anyway. I always did.
He hadn’t believed me yet.
