Pumpkin on AO3
With a satisfied hum Bilbo pats the side of the pumpkin, one of the many glowing in the afternoon sun like large orange jewels. The kind any hobbit would value more than the gems mined from the darkness of the mountain. Although, he thinks, earth-stained thumb idly rubbing over the glittering betrothal bead in his braid, those have their uses too.
Still, these pumpkins will bring their own kind of wealth. Gently, he pries one of the largest free of its vine and leaves, grunting a little from the weight. This one would be enough to be turned into a patch of delicious soup, maybe even little sweet pies, spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon. And the seeds… Well, they were good roasted, tossed with a little salt, maybe chillis if he was feeling adventurous.
Bilbo carries the pumpkin to the work bench where a set of kitchen tools, a courting gift from Thorin, is already waiting. If he’s careful, he can get the flesh out with the gourd intact. He’ll make a lantern, Bilbo thinks, with runes for home and family and blessings of the season carved onto the skin.
Singing softly to himself, Bilbo gets to work, the autumn sun warming his back. Though not as much as the knowledge of the home and family waiting for him inside, and the blessings he knows he already has.
