Yep, yep, the pain fades fast. I have just signed up for fandomtrumpshate again. I both upped my bid to min $15 and ticked the 10-20k box because let's face it, the fic is going to end up there anyway. This year I'll be offering are Good Omens, Guardian and Harry Potter. As usual though, I am open to discuss any other fandoms too as long as I know the canon or have a reasonable chance to familiarise myself with it.

The sign-ups are open until 31st of Jan, and you can browse the bids from 17th of Feb. The actual bidding period is short and intense, 24th-28th of Feb. Check the community for details! I'll link to my offer once it goes up in case you are interested in bidding.

However! I also really wanted to boost the project the community mods are doing: Boosting Fan Labour, i.e. beta reading (and equivalent to vids, art etc), expertise offered in e.g. cultural or professional knowhow, translations...

Check the link for all the details but I thought this was a really cool and worthwhile effort! They are looking for testimonials from fan labourers and those who have benefitted from their efforts, so maybe consider doing that (shout out to my two most recent betas fledge and dreamersdare here!). In addition, they are setting up a 'Regiment of Fan Labourers' to support the FTH writers mostly, where people can donate to the charities listed in exchange for help. You can sign up for that if you don't want to/can't offer fanworks!

I'm excited about this one! Sounds like you did it last year? Did people generally stay at the original minimum bid, or did people bid higher? I wasn't quite sure what to do for the signup, so I just stuck with the default.

Yeah, I did it last year. The last two long fics I posted (SGA and Bandom) were both for this, for the highes and second highest bidder.

I think it varies. I'm relatively unknown so I didn't really get many bids at all, or possibly just wasn't offering in 'hot rn' fandoms. There are some offers from well known authors in hot fandoms that can go high but there are also a lot of people who don't get bids so in a way a lot of bargains to be had. I bid and got an author last year (for $40) and it was honestly the best money I spent because she wrote way above and beyond (like, over 100k plus a 30k treat...) - I'm going to be donating some extra as a thank you when I've finished reading!

Interesting. Wow, $40 would be great... to me it's as much about donating to the orgs as it is about the fanwork, you know? I guess given both my personal obscurity + the very very small fandoms I write for I can't really anticipate getting high bids for my own sake, I'm just hoping people will want an excuse to donate to worthy causes!

There are other options, like offering to Brit pick or simply finding some bargains for getting the fic you'd want :)

Yeah, so like if a non-British author is writing in a British fandom/setting, they may want someone to check they're using right terms or not making mistakes on how society works here (it's A&E not ER and you don't pay to use it etc). There's equivalent of that for all cultures of course.

The fan labour thing? I think they're just pooling entries to one convenient place, and pooling donations. So instead having to find individual beta and bid for them, you just go to the pool, find someone who can do it, donate, done. I think. It's a good idea.
