I've got nothing, apart from a renewed interest to hang around ontd_startrek even more now. You know, with the girls and the gays!

Yeah well, I rather like my sci-fi with ladies and gheys. Also lady gheys. It's a thing. I'm crippled by my vagina though, so what do I know.

At the time, I thought that the way to react to this guy was to write a tech-heavy sci-fi story in which the male captain is cheerfully and openly having it off with the male engineer. But then I realized that that's still not what this guy is looking for - what he wants is an instruction manual on how to build and run a spaceship.

Also? As somebody who has spent her entire degree charting the gradual evolution of literature across five centuries - parallel to the political and social atmosphere of the time - I just want to tell this guy to GET THE FUCK OUT because LITERATURE DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY. The fact that this man thinks that "his" genre should be exempt from change fills me with more rage than the fact that he's apparently blaming me because it isn't.

Yes, because sci-fi is about TECHNOLOGY AND THINGS THAT GO BOOM. And not like about exploring the human condition or societal issues. Oh no, those things are girly and icky from female cooties ugh.

Also, I do believe that it is the male homo/bi/omnisexuals this guy has a problem with. I doubt female/female romance/sex causes nearly as much vexation... Masturbation yes, agitation no. YOUR DOUBLE-STANDARD IS SHOWING, BETTER ZIP UP MORON.

Yes to everything you've said, basically. It's like some desperate attempt to defend the last bastion of masculinity. Except for how women in sci-fi is hardly a new phenomenon... Change is scary, some people never grow up.

You just don't understand his manpain. And how could you really!

*sigh*

The problem with these idiots is that you can wave as much research and reasoned arguments at them as you want, but they're still only going to see a woman who clearly hasn't gotten herself a real man yet.

Gays. Women. Women Gays.

OMG.

This is an appalling article thatwould have me screaming Troll! if it were on lj.

I would feel guilt and shame for my vagina, except I don't.

And I'm pretty sure there's a lot of "moronic relationship stuff" in TOS and Star Wars and other pre-tainted sci fi.

WOMEN GAYS ARE THE WOR-- oh wait. Hee, hee, lesbians are naughty! Even though they're really just doing it to turn men on.

I kind of hope it was a troll. But even if it were, the sad fact is that there are men who think this.

Well yeah. If you want technical stuff without icky relationships, then by an engineering text book. Relationships and characterisation and emotions are what makes sci-fi interesting, it's what fucking makes it matter

Auuugh, guys like that make me want to headdesk repeatedly. "Oh noes, icky girls ruining our Boys' Club!" Wtfffff.

Seriously, his argument is RIDICULOUS and it makes me gag.

With women killing science fiction on television, the current generation of boys won’t have this opportunity to be inspired to work in these fields. There is still a great deal of written science fiction that is real science fiction so all is not lost. However, many boys who would have gone on to make scientific discoveries and invent new technologies will not do so since they will never be inspired by science fiction as boys.

I kind of really want to stab the above paragraph. YOUR REASONING. WHERE IS IT. *academic stab*

Oh, but sorry, I'm probably incapable of stabbing because I'm a ~*~girl~*~.

It really is a lot of "waah, waah, girl cooties" whining.

Oh I know there is no logic to his argument. It's the old 'either-or' thinking where giving rights to one group somehow takes them away from another. NOT SO DICKHEAD!

Well of course you are. Knives are way too phallic for you handle them with any skill.

I haz been reading/watching sci-fi since about 1959 and last time I looked I woz female. Husband likes Torchwood and Dr. Who and Being Human. Some scientist/engineer/inventor men I know like LotR, Harry Potter and music and poetry. It doesn't seem to hinder their scientific work.
Also: Blake's Seven which was also BBC had wimmin in it quite some time ago. And Ursula Le Guin has been writing for ever.
Does this guy actually have any influence anywhere or can we just ignore...?

Well, considering the complete lack of anything resembling a coherent argument and the fact that this person seems to be part of some sort of anti-feminist blog and uses a pseudonym, I think it's fairly safe to ignore him...

Yes to everything you say. And this person's concept of what constitutes 'male' and 'female' is I think universally insulting. I think men should vbe furious about the implications that they just want to blow shit up and have no interest in feelings, relationships or contemplating the human condition...
