I'm mostly just tired. And the bed is doing my back in. Soft beds do this a lot with me. They need to be just soft enough that I can lie on them, but firm and flat - no dips in the mattress.

I want my cats. And my house. And my bed. And my space. I want to work from my office desk instead of commuting. (Okay, the commuting might be required going forward.)

I have met some excellent people while on this work trip, but also I am tired and I want to be in spaces which are mine.

Never give up anything that makes you happy just because other people think it is silly or childish.  Especially never give up an effective coping skill!  Yes, I have stuffed animals.  I am currently most fond of Snoozimals and Squishmallows for practical use, but we also have a weird stuffy collection for artistic merit.

Dexterity and climbing ability: how ancient human relatives used their hands

Scientists have found new evidence for how our fossil human relatives in South Africa may have used their hands. Researchers investigated variation in finger bone morphology to determine that South African hominins not only may have had different levels of dexterity, but also different climbing abilities.

Diversity is strength.

Ernest Hemingway "A Farewell To Arms" (Vintage Classics)

Hemingway's semi-autobiographical depictions of his adventures hide, with terse descriptive writing, a seriously dysfunctional emotional life. The war in Italy frames Frederic Henry's affair with English nurse Catherine Barkley, a relationship that exists more out of lust and circumstance than for any deep emotional connection. Hemingway evokes sympathy for the doomed lovers despite their shallowness.

In the context of the modernist movement, Hemingway clearly expresses his generations disillusionment with the old world order of warfare as a path to honuor. Frederic Henry starts out as an idealist, trying to convince his Italian compatriates that war should be fought until resolution, despite the seeming mindlessness of the violence. It isn't until his own life is threatened by the clear stupidity of the carabinieri that he realizes he must desert and try to make a life with Catherine. With the tragic ending of the book, Hemingway seems to be saying that happiness is fleeting in our modern world - that escape from the world and its machinery of death is impossible.

What is ironic in this novel?

Frederic is in the Italian army as an American. At one point another soldier assumes Frederic is Italian-American, and is in the war for patriotic reasons. Why is Frederic in the war? Ostensibly he was in Italy studying architecture, and then joined the army as an ambulance driver when hostilities broke out. But there is a clear blurring of national distinctions, along with a dismissal of patriotism, glory, or honour as motivating factors in war. AFTA is very cynical about the nationalist tendencies of warmongers, as exemplified by the retreat scene when Fred's life is more threatened by the Italians than the Germans.

There is also a strong vein of atheism in this novel - from the bullying of the priest to Frederic's unanswered prayers at the end, faith in God is notably absent in this Catholic setting. While the modernists saw traditional religious faith as a creaking structure that falls apart in the face of the horrors of modern life and death, Hemingway is implying that faith and hope cannot stand against the tragedy of the war. Frederic says at the end of the novel that "that is what you did. You died. You did not know what it was about. You never had time to learn." Death is meaningless and inevitable, and religion naively tries to make death a part of God's plan.

Frederic is an anti-hero, in that he loves Catherine (which is the only moral belief he holds) but seems distant from her, constantly drinking and making love to her, impregnating her, but without any kind of plan for how they will go on after leaving the war. Frederic is the typical Hemingway hero in that his own ego and his self-image gets in the way of a meaningful emotional connection. While it is clear that he loves Catherine, he is never vulnerable to her. He has to keep up the facade of being in control.

So, would I recommend this book in the en?. Personally, I found his short stories more satisfying, and it is there i would direct a newcomer before tackling this novel.

It's been almost two months since I've posted here?!
  1. That can't be right. But it is??

  2. I mean, I have been in a complete slump for nearly three months now, and today is the first day in ages that I don't feel like a zombie, but still. How did that happen?!

  3. It didn't and doesn't feel like I was away from here for that long at all!

  4. But I guess that's because I've actually been commenting a lot - I've been on DW! I've been reading my flist, and replying to posts and comments! And I've been part of the 60-billion-comment club over at [community profile] sid_guardian, aka the excellent Guardian discussions happening in the comments of the novel readalong posts, and [personal profile] china_shop's delightful drama polls, where we can't shut up about our fandom. *g*

  5. What I haven't done in all that time is any real writing, other than the one exchange fic that went live last night. Just a bunch of alibi sentences and false starts. Pretty sure that made the zombie issue worse; I always feel worse when I'm not writing. But in addition to the slump, time and energy have both been at a low ebb.

  6. So, uh, yeah. Two months! For reasons, but I'm glad to finally be breaking that streak.

In conclusion, hi, everyone! I hope to actually post more again now, and not fall into a slump again right away. (Fingers crossed!)

Coming soon (I HOPE): Guardian 520 Day Reverse Exchange reveals (preview: I wrote a fic! I got fantastic artwork for one of my fics! There's a delightful bounty of stuff in the collection that I need to sit down to properly enjoy and comment on!) and also other updates.

Chapter 1: I previously read the first 16 chapters. Let's see how much I remember! In this chapter, we meet the guys who will be part of the 'spell' and a girl from the girl's academy who will get involved. The transformation happens and all but one of them come together in a classroom.

Chapter 2-3: The guys realize it happens when it rains a lot. Haruto, the dorm supervisor who's been letting them stay over it when it happens, contacts the girl's academy headmistress for help. Haruto helps Hazuki try on the girl's school uniform but trips and lands on him right when his friend Jouji walks in;;

I'm curious if Haruto has a secret and who Kaoruko thought of when they were talking.

Chapter 4: Hold up...Haruto already had one girl's uniform in his house, there was the girl from the flashback and her saying she needed to tell Kaoruko something... I want to guess that Haruto is a trans man but I may be reaching because it's a gender bender manga...

Chapter 5: Why assume all the 'girls' were from America, why couldn't they say they were from like Spain so that they wouldn't have to worry about someone trying to speak to them in English?

Hazuki gets invited to a movie by Asumi and forgets he's a 'girl' and it's not a date, but the other guys support him. Also meanwhile they talk about their love lives. 'Maki' had a fiancee? 'Madoka' currently has one. No one else is dating. Hazuki turned back into a guy and gets stuck in the women's bathroom at the theater.

I found my initial notes the first time I read it! From 2013...

old comments

Chapter 2: I really like how the appearance change from male to female was mostly subtle. They didn't all sprout moe eyes and super long hair or big boobs. It'd be really nice if this manga were more about the characters rather than 'how different the genders are'/how much it can be exploited.

I look forward to finding out more about the characters! They all seem really interesting so far, but I haven't been about to remember all their names yet.

Chapter 4: It doesn't matter what body parts they have, they're all still guys in gender. I like that they don't talk to each other any different than when in their usual state. I also liked the part where they noticed they were sitting with their legs open on the train and had to fix that, because they were wearing skirts. XP Nice touch.

Chapter 5: Sometimes I just don't get how guys think about girls (mainly how it's depicted in some shoujo manga). :/ They're not cattle, just because some guys are physically stronger doesn't mean they have all the advantages against girls.

Poor Maki, I wonder what his secret is... Same with Haruto, seems like there was a girl in his past?

Hazuki/Asumi is cute, if it was yuri I'd be okay with that pairing.

Today is cloudy and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen several sparrows and house finches, a catbird, and a phoebe

I put out water for the birds.

I set out the flats of pots and watered them.

EDIT 5/21/25 -- I did a bit more work outside.

I've seen a female cardinal.

EDIT 5/21/25 -- I potted up 2 pink-flowered 'Toscana' strawberries, each in its own pot.  I filled another pot with a purple-and-white striped 'Wave' petunia, a 'Dusty Miller' artemesia, and 2 white sweet alyssums.  I put these on the tall metal planter and tied them in place.

EDIT 5/21/25 -- We moved 2 bags of composted manure to the old picnic table.

I've seen a young fox squirrel.

EDIT 5/21/25 -- I potted up the last of the Shithouse Marigolds and Charleston Food Forest marigolds, each in its own pot.  These are the last of the ones I grew from seed.  All winter-sown pots sprouted at least one marigold, and many sprouted several.  That makes this a good approach to repeat.

EDIT 5/21/25 -- I sowed a pot with passionflower seeds.  No idea if they'll actually fruit here, but it's a host plant for multiple butterfly species who only need the leaves.  I've never tried to grow these before, and bought them on a whim when I saw the seed packet in a store, knowing that they are a valuable host plant.

I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 5/21/25 -- I sowed two pots with nasturtiums

EDIT 5/21/25 -- I took pictures of the pots where I sowed seeds earlier.  Of the 10 pots of Little Bluestem that I sowed on 2/24/25, five of them sprouted healthy little clumps of grass.  I planted these five in one of the strips of the prairie garden.  While 50% is not a great success rate, it is a useful rate particularly with native plants that are expensive to buy in pots.

EDIT 5/21/25 -- I did a bit more work outside.

I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches along with several mourning doves.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Life is full of things which are hard or tedious or otherwise unpleasant that need doing anyhow. They help make the world go 'round, they improve skills, and they boost your sense of self-respect. But doing them still kinda sucks. It's all the more difficult to do those things when nobody appreciates it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our accomplishments and pat each other on the back.

What are some of the hard things you've done recently? What are some hard things you haven't gotten to yet, but need to do? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your hard things a little easier?

Not even gonna hide the lede: THIS IS MY FAVE CDRAMA OF THE PAST 2 YEARS. It first aired in December 2024.

The premise

The story is abt Dou Zhao (played by Meng Ziyi). She's in her early 30s and has been married for over a decade to a guy she'd entered into an arranged marriage with. It's been a good life for the most part. The marriage isn't a passionate one, BUT Dou Zhao takes her role as wife v. seriously (including administrating the home AND some of her husband's business.) The first episode is set a year after she had a miscarriage (this is, IIRC, only mentioned in the first episode.) However, the loss affected her health to the point that she knows she's dying. (It's not explained what it is, but whenever she coughs and covers her mouth with a handkerchief, there's blood on it.)

ANYWAYS, one day, Dou Zhao finds out that her husband has been cheating on her with her OWN SISTER. It leads to a really bad confrontation (which includes an accusation from her sister to Dou Zhao abt their mother's death.) Betrayed and heartbroken (she might've not loved the guy, but she did cared abt him), Dou Zhao makes a public announcement that she's getting a divorce and leaves with her personal maid.

Because there's an actual coup happening in the capital (where one of the princes is deposing the emperor with the help of General Song Mo ((Li Yunri), the best general in the entire army), Dou Zhao has to go to her hometown to file the divorce. Along the way, an accident happens. She's rescued by Song Mo (!!!)--who is now at odds with the rebel prince-cum-new-emperor.

A monk named Yi Jong (played Xia Zhiguang) shows up and invites Dou Zhao and everyone else to his temple cuz a snowstorm is imminent. While there, Dou Zhao and Song Mo have a conversation that goes on until daybreak. Yi Jong comments something abt how the two of them are connected (cuz he saw it in the heavens.)

In the morning, when everyone starts to get ready to leave the temple, who shows up but Wang Ge (played by Du Yiheng) who is the head eunuch AND Wei Tingyu (played by Li Xinze) who is Dou Zhao's husband. They ACCUSE HER AND SONG MO OF BEING IN A RELATIONSHIP which the new emperor says is treason. So they have to be executed. They've brought a few soldier squads with them.

Song Mo's like "Bitch, what are y'all even talking abt?" And calls his own regiments to action.

A battle begins.

In the middle of all that, Yi Jong leads Dou Zhao, her maid, and Song Mo in the the direction of a secret passage out of the temple. Along the way, Dou Zhao's maid is killed and Yi Jong is mortally wounded. Before he dies, he repeats that he'd seen how there was a huge calamity happening, but within it there was a miracle. Also that Dou Zhao and Song Mo's destinies are connected. Then he hands Dou Zhao a v. special book, telling her that the book is a key to fix everything that has gone wrong. After that, he's dunzo.

Dou Zhao and Song Mo are running away when someone shoots an arrow that's so powerful it goes thru Song Mo AND Dou Zhao. The momentum is such that it pulls them into a chasm!

As the two of them fall and are dying, Dou Zhao thinks abt what her life had been like and wishing things had been different. She holds onto the book. Suddenly, instead of falling, she starts to float up. A drop of Song Mo's blood floats out of his body and embeds itself in the back of Dou Zhao's right ear. It becomes a red beauty mark.

She then wakes up in a new life, TWENTY YEARS IN THE PAST, with full memories of her first life AND her awareness as a 30-something year old. BUT NOW SHE'S IN HER OWN BODY WHEN SHE WAS 10 YEARS OLD!!!

Talk abt a record scratch moment! (and it's all filmed super exquisitely too.)

I first heard abt this drama toward the end of last year. The buzz was THAT strong. Fast-forward to early January this year when I decided to give it a try. IIRC, I ended watching all 34 episodes in A WEEK!!! XD

There's a TON I like abt this series. The plot, pacing, cinematography, casting, and acting were great. Motivations for the good characters AND the villains mostly made sense (there's one villain character I'll talk abt in my criticisms).

Another thing I dug abt this show was seen how Dou Zhao's meddling in her second life affected everyone else's life. Frex, some characters who had been good ppl in the first life become villains in the second one and vice versa. Because she's the viewers' touchstone in terms of this new life, it's fairly easy to side with her and, as a result, be suspicious of others' motivations. And also be shocked when a villain in Life 1 becomes an ally in Life 2.

The show has a fantastic balance of angst and humor too! Plus at least 2 extra layers of 💜GOOD ROMANCE, Y'ALL.💜

THE CP, Y'ALL. FUCKING *CHEF'S KISS* . Like, even before they get together, they have AN INCANDESCENT kind of chemistry. It's IMPOSSIBLE to not cheer for them. Theirs is a FREAK4FREAKLOVER relationship (with Dou Zhao being the FREAK (affectionately) and Song Mo being v. happy as the FREAKLOVER.)

They're also a bona fide, certified, and feared POWER COUPLE. Like, there's a moment in the story when they two of them are truly, 100% just chilling out at home…and yet some of the villains are STRESSING THE FUCK OUT cuz they're sure that Dou Zhao and Song Mo are planning stuff to bring them down, hahah. Then the scene cuts to a sweet moment between the CP.

This isn't exactly a spoiler, BUT I'm sure there are ppl who don't want to know anything abt the CP, so I'm gonna be considerate and throw in a

SPOILER WARNING
I really, really liked how the show reversed the expectations w/r/t the roles within the relationship. Because, once they get together, Dou Zhao slides into a soft femdome role. She takes care of Song Mo (bathing him in one scene) in a way that's not subservient at all. He's a leader in his own right yet he's a total softie with his wife. She's strong for him even when there doesn't seem to be any hope in the horizon.

One thing I really, really fancied abt this CP is that there's no misunderstanding OR hints of cheating or actual cheating in their romance. They hold each other's hearts thru this life, the previous one, and the many other ones to come. This show makes that v. fucking clear. One final thing I like abt this CP is that they most deffo fuck (not, like, onscreen cuz, LOL, it's a C Drama and so it had to pass censorship). However, there's a carnal aspect to the relationship that's part of their bond. Though it's technically true that Dou Zhao is a virgin in Life 2, she's playfully sensual with Song Mo (to the point of teasing him aaaalmost without meaning to, heheh) here and there.

Do I have any criticisms?

The last ONE FOURTH of the drama has a character having a v. random heel turn. For which I do blame the otherwise amazing script. As I understand it, there are a lot of hints throughout the novel (this drama is based on) of the character either being morally gray (if not 100% evil.) However, in the show, the character becomes a monster for a reason that doesn't convince me at all. I get that there wasn't enough time, but there we are.

IMO, eps. 24-27 the show gets a bit weird cuz the character's heel turn occurs and you're literally like ?????. IJS

There were also two secondary couples I didn't care abt at all. However, the show focused a bit too much on them.

What's the FMC's plot armor level?

Low-Medium.

Bad things DO happen to Dou Zhao, stuff she has to recover from (mainly physically). Occasionally, she does get outsmarted by the villains and, sometimes, her memories from Life 1 do mess her up in LIfe 2 (assuming a character is good or evil, frex) from time to time.

IMO, the show didn't exactly protected her (the way I saw with Fangfei in The Double and Niaoniao in Love Like the Galaxy.) Her knowledge and training (via the combination of her memories and the book Yi Jong gave her) explain why she's able to weasel her way out of most predicaments. Though, again, she' s not infallible either.

How does the show handle the inevitable "Oh noes, the emperor's in danger of losing his throne!" storyline?

It's fine. The bulk of the struggle kicks off around ep. 25, but the story keeps things even between that and the CP's romance. I didn't feel one way or another abt the emperor in this drama. There are both external and internal reasons why he is the way he is. Tan Kai as the emperor did a good turn in the role.

How does it address/works with the trope?

IT'S ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF THE WOMAN SET ON REVENGE/COLD GENERAL. Hits every point from Dou Zhao's initial disinterest in Song Mo, her revenge plans, Song Mo being mesmerized by her everything, him having a strong presence and being a fierce fighter, etc.

In a scale of Somewhat Threatening (1) to Having MURDER FACE 24/7/365 (10), I'm placing Song Mo at 8, i.e. Expect A Painful Death If You Ever Cross Him. Although he softens up a ton once he and Dou Zhou are an official couple.

Do I recommend it?

OFC, I DO!! It's a show that gives you action, angst, romance, and a v. entertaining journey. The HEA ending is a delight (including the quick epilogue/stinger at the end of ep. 34.) I'm giving it a 4.7 out of 5. Watched it on YouTube at least twice now. #NoRegrets

Queerness level

It's low. There's one (1) instance of a platonic soulmates dynamic that could be read as queerplatonic, maybe? Though that depends a lot on whether or not one would see one half of the ship as asexual. IDK. I did read it as such, YMMV. Interestingly enough, there's another dynamic that could be perceived as a one-sided queer crush between another character and that same male (and possibly asexual) character.

Le Trailer

This is a teaser clip from when the show was being filmed. IMO, the official trailer gives way too much away. I chose to share this video instead cuz it showcases the cinematography and overall LOVEY-DOVEY (but in an an ADULT WAY) vibes.

The rest of Sunday ended up being kinda fuzzy, mostly due to the warm and having cider during Rogue One so my focus was a lil off. (And then my laptop was all ‘update! There’s an update!’ During dungeons and dodongos which was an annoyance)

In the night I started Code Of Silence which was pretty good. Then I watched the Quatermass Experiment cause I saw it on Amazon prime and I’d seen it mentioned a lot of the last Who boxset. It did start pretty promising (and had someone I recognised from the Marple films) though damn it did lose something as it went on.

I found it funny that the wife of the surviving astronaut complained he was being tested on in the lab, wanted him in the hospital to get treated instead and the almost immediately plotted to get him out of there to take him home. Like girl what are you even doing??

Monday was uneventful for the most part (other than fic reading woo!)ut I did unlock General Grievous on Fortnite, yay! He looks so cool! I also won a code for Shovel Knight dig, which I had a go on last night and I can tell it’s one of those games that’s gonna be tricky as hell to get through but it should be fun to do some runs.

Tuesday I was at the library to cover Joy, but I mostly just read the Seven Dials Mystery some more (and there’s already been another body!). I love that Lord Catterham is back from Chimneys, there’s something so funny about him and how he’s despairing about everything. I might read more after this post

There was an announcement that James Marriott was gonna be doing a signing tour for his album, which made me glad I’d held off getting it. After a scare (the site said tickets were unavailable😭) I did manage to get it so I’ll be off to the Birmingham date, yay! I got the cd, though I might get the vinyl on the day too.

Last night after A LOT of delays, I was finally able to get back to Stranger Things, yippe! Annoyingly I misclicked and so skipped the previously (which would’ve been a helpful reminder but I couldn’t seem to get it back) again it was essentially four plot lines (until two of them came together right at the end).

First the simplest, the boys in the van trying to find Eleven, which felt like it would be more comic relief until Will and Mike’s talk which was so obviously Will saying how he really felt to Mike only substituting Eleven’s name. I just wanted to give him a hug.

Then there was Hopper, Murray and Joyce escaping the Russian prison which had a creepy moment of them in a lab with Demogorgon’s in tubes which gave me vibes of Alien Resurrection (which also had Winona in so surely it was intentional). I did half expect the glasses to smash though.

Then there was Eleven dealing with her past memories and the doctors messing her up and trying to stop her from going. Like her ‘Papa’ (I’ve forgot his name) is such an ass trying to control her, threatening Owen’s, drugging her and then trying to get her to forgive him as he’s dying. I’m glad she didn’t.

Then there’s everyone else back in Hawkins. Damn that sportsball captain is such a dick intimidating Nancy like that. I think she should have hit him with hammers (or shot him since she had a gun).I feel their whole plane is gonna go so wrong though, like they just think they can walk up to Vecna in a trance and kill him. Nah that ain’t happening at all is it?

But also! EDDIE WHY DID YOU CALL STEVE BIG BOY? Like he is so absolutely blatant about wanting him damn. I love that for him though.

I do wanna see what happens (though how everyone is gonna get back to Hawkins to be of any use feels doubtful!) so I hope I’ll get to see it the next few days. The only issue is the length of the finale is over 2 hours so my focus has to be good for it. (So it might be Thursday or a Friday)

Today we went down the road to pick mum’s meds up. I had just hoped to go slow to make it quick but no, mum wanted to go to cause Sainsburys clothes had a sale on which… ugh ended up being so annoying. At least I got some cheap things and the Lego Star Wars magazine I was hoping to get and mum’s friend was there and offered us a ride home.

When we got back the new Doctor Who magazine was here, which came with a free book of Ghe Wheel In Soace which I might have to read cause the ep hasn’t been released cause it’s missing. I just read the preview of the finale eps which didn’t reveal much (there’s not even a cast list!) but the synopsis is what I’ve seen people theorising).

After lunch a storm rolled in with hapeavy rain and thunder, but sadly it didn’t last too long which is a shame.

Tonight’s plan is the new series of The Chelsea Detective, an Agatha Christie thing (with David Suchet!) and then it depends how tired I am.

This book is the best of the bunch so far, but I'm not sure if that's because the author is becoming more comfortable writing them or because it took place in Cabot Cove, as I mentioned. I'm giving it four hearts.
