I'm not holding my breath but thought I'd ask anyway... I've finished my [livejournal.com profile] serialkillerbb fic which is just above 9k in length. Would some kind soul be willing to do a beta read (grammar check only really but other comments welcome too) for me? The posting doesn't start until1st of September so there is no great hurry with it. Here is the key info re warnings etc:

Fandom: RPS, Telephone AU
Pairing: Beyoncé(HoneyB)/Lady Gaga
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Serial killers, violence (including sexual), child abuse (including sexual) and neglect, prostitution, all around fucked-upness
Summary: How do little girls turn into serial killers? Well, it has something do with rats. And men. And society that leaves little girls to them. It’s not all bad though. Eventually, sitting in a diner and looking scratched and golden like she’s fresh out of a fight with King Midas, Gaga finds a woman whose scars match hers. And that isn’t even the start of the real story, none of this is. – A pre-canon fic, or a long prologue to the music vid itself, and my consequent ‘show me your teeth’ series.

I know this is a rare fandom and a dark fic to the boot so interest will always be minimal. Nevertheless, I'm quite proud of the fic and would like to ensure it goes out without any pesky mistakes. Any help appreciated!

kat_lair, dreamersdare and pushkin666 are plotting a fannish weekend in Broadstairs in September.

Broadstairstintype corner purplewording2

Broadstairs is in the Garden of England (Kent), and is situated on the South-East coast. Think quaint English sea side town, with excellent fish and chips, ice cream, local beer and cider and fannish fun.

The plan is for it to start Friday afternoon and go through to Sunday lunchtime. Programme is a WIP, but will be quite easy going, including hang outs, fannish things, vids, going out for a meal, sand, sea and ice cream.

Depending on numbers we might look into booking a function room, or equivalant rather than cramming into Kat's living room/garden, which would mean a small fee to cover costs.

Before we go completely overboard with the planning (la la), we would like to know if you would be interested in joining us for Broadstairs Bacchanalia 2014.

Please comment below if you think you could join us and with the weekend(s) that you prefer.

5th - 7th
12th - 14th
19th - 21st
26th - 28th

Feel free to pimp, or pass on details of this.

Had an awesome day yesterday, morning spent mooching around Covent Garden with [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 (managed to find some Christmas presents too) and afternoon spent hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] trialia who was in town for the Doctor Who Con.

Then! Ha! Guess who managed to score a ticket to see the 50th Anniversary Episode at the cinema for less than retail price? Yep, I did! \o/ By virtue of being in the right place at the right time, we randomly got offered a spare ticket by a lovely gentleman who' brother-in-law couldn't make it after all due to being unwell but who was happy to sell it another fan. So yay, I got to watch on the big screen in 3D with tons of other excited fan many of who had dressed up (best were the two ladies in protective suits who wheeled in Cassandra, as a face painted on a sheet, they got a round of applause).

Also at the start;
Screen reminder: Please turn off your mobile phones
[livejournal.com profile] trialia: If you don't, someone will kill you
Random person in the audience: Probably Doctor Who
Rest of the audience: *applauds*

Anyway, the episode, it gave me feelings )

[livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 and I were wondering if there are people around who would be interested in meeting up for pre-Christmas fannish chats/drinks in London?

Very casual, with opportunity for fannish socialising and hitting London for Christmas shopping before/after if you so want.

Please go comment here if you're interested and let us know which date (Sat 30/11 or 14/12) you would prefer.

Hah! Finally have finished the first lot of the request icons. I may have gone a little overboard with this lot but it's all [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666's fault because she wanted icons of some really lovely FOB photos and well, so much pretty...

Anyway, teasers!

All of the icons here are open for grabbing (with credit pls), [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 is generous like that.

The days before a holiday I find it increasingly difficult to actually motivate myself to do some work. All I've done today and yesterday is wield various emails regarding this conference handbook I'm organising, and copy-paste text around in an effort to put together the skeleton of my next teaching portfolio assignment. Word-count wise I think I'm actually almost 50% there, although it doesn't translate to actual effort still needed for it. But I just can't muster the energy to care. Here are the mental justifications for what is essentially laziness:
1. I am actually more than half done with this teaching portfolio now (nevermind that I still haven't got any formative feedback on it and if that turns out to be not so positive I may very well have to redo stuff)
2. The deadline for this is not until end of October (nevermind that I have conference paper, resit grading, and at least ten lectures to pull out of my ass by then as well)
3. Just because I've got two weeks off and mum is here, doesn't mean I can't do some work. She's got books and crafts with her and doesn't need entertaining 24/7 (nevermind that I was hoping to use such spare time to write my challenge fics and make some icons)
4. All in all I have 10 unused holiday days and no time to take them so surely doing barely half days for a couple of weeks is justified

*handwaves*

Anyway, today and yesterday I've also had some builders around to sort out my bathroom roof and other small things that needed fixing. Which has been another convenient excuse for not getting much work done.  But, at least house things are now fixed.

Tomorrow I have a tutorial with my challenging dissertation student (will she ever finish it? WILL SHE EVER LEAVE? I just don't know) followed by attempt to further my teaching portfolio assignment some more. [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 is coming for the weekend and may be roped into cleaning the house with me. On Sunday afternoon I'm going to head over to Gatwick airport, stay overnight at the Premier Inn there and pick up mum bright and early Monday morning.

Ugh, right now I think I'm going to go and organise some paperwork in the office and call British Gas about fitting smart meters. That should assuage my guilt of not working a little. But first, a meme I snagged from [livejournal.com profile] beedekka a while back.

Meeeeemeeeeee )

Dearest all!

Just to remind you that Week of Poetry is starting tomorrow and it's not too late to join in!

What is involved? Basically, you pledge to post a poem per day every day. This could be a poem you wrote yourself or a poem by someone else.

Who is involved? Well, me, over at [livejournal.com profile] boneverse. And because I don't like to do these things alone, I have pressured convinced a few flisters (waves at [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666, [livejournal.com profile] teithiwr and [livejournal.com profile] darkangel_0410) to join me. You should totally do the same! Look, I even made a banner! (Why yes, I am a little sad. But look, pretty colours!) Which you can totally snag!

And, by request, the code for the banner linking to this post!

If that is not enticing you, I don't know what will. But you can tell me and I'll see what I can do...

I had [livejournal.com profile] moth2fic and Mr Moth for a 12h visit as they stopped over here for the night on their trek toward Portugal. It was supposed to be a slightly longer visit but thanks to Mr Moth faffing over god knows what they didn’t get here until late last night. They have, however, promised to make up for this on another occasion. I waved them off toward Dover and ferry to Calais this morning.

Since then I have betaed approximately 589390 (it felt like) ficlets for [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 (some which were extremely traumatizing) and vegged out on the sofa bed watching Kerrang. It’s sunny outside but I don’t want to leave the safety of my nest (I did put laundry on the line which surely counts as some kind of accomplishment).

Anyway, today’s post was going to be about poeting (I like to call it that. English language is crazy and I like to coax it over the edge). Which is something I’ve been trying to get back into again.

It occurs to me that I have some new flisters who may not know, but poeting, being poetish, and writing emo lyrics things with verses are things I do. Occasionally. Sometimes even often. I do all these things over at [livejournal.com profile] boneverse because a while back I decided that I wasn’t comfortable doing it my main LJ anymore for reasons that don’t need elaborating at this juncture.

This year had a slow start but it’s picked up and lately I’ve written stuff inspired by [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666’s writing prompts (We Are Learning To Make Fire, black books), spending a day admiring my squidgy self (In July, I am fascinated by my own body), and Panic at the Disco’s new single (Mr Anywhen) – incidentally, I make no apologies for the latter because sometimes Brendon just needs a metaphorical bitch slap and them’s the facts.

Anyway, all the stuff there is f-locked but if you are morbidly curious mildly interested, go ahead and friend it. Anyone I’ve currently friended on this journal will get automatically added there if they so desire.

More to the point, well, the actual point: The July Of Posting is almost over. But, because I am crazy I would like to follow that up with a Week of Poetry. This is something I’ve done before, often with the fellow poetess [livejournal.com profile] teithiwr, and it usually results in at least one decent poem amidst the mediocre ones.

Thusly, a challenge! *throws down the gauntlet with a dramatic flourish and a flip of hair*

Do you poet? Do you verse? Do you Sylvia Plath or John Keats or even Pete Wentz? Then join me for A Week of Poetry on 5-11 of August! Poem a day, come rain or shine or rainbows full of unicorns!

If you don’t want to try your hand at poeting yourself, pledging to a week of posting other people’s poems, e.g. some of your favourite ones, is also accepted!

I’ll even promise to combine a master list of all Week of Poetry participants’ posts at the end of it too! How good is that?

So... how about it? *eyes you all challengingly*

So, whilst admiring [livejournal.com profile] margaret_r’s lovely photos the other day, I got the idea for today’s post. I enjoy playing around with graphics so I thought I’d offer to make some icons for people, in case there was interest.

So, first ten people to comment will get an icon (though likely more than one) made of the picture and/or text of their choice. Please comment with photos/quotes and I’ll have a go. I'll promise to make you at least one icon but feel free to provide several options just in case I'll get inspired. Also, let me know if there is something you’d particularly like, e.g. a text, colour, crop...

Greetings and salutations! (I occasionally use that greeting at the start of a lecture and it always makes the wee 18-year-olds look slightly alarmed, it's great)

Anyway. In a combined effort to liven up LJ, both [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 and I will be posting something every day in the month of July. *pauses to give you time to digest the momentous joy this no doubt elicits* For an organised schedule of ficlets, memes, pictures, writing prompts etc you should head over to [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666's journal. Here on my journal you will encounter the usual, only now at more frequent rate: disorganised rambling, whining, and occasional fic.

I've been enjoying a week's epic holiday with [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666 during which we, among other things, did tequila shots, sang power ballads, slashed historical figures, scored a free penthouse stay for a night, and oh yes, finished our first novel :D More on all of those later this week, including photos. Today was a first day back at "work", meaning I sat in the garden with a laptop, catching up with emails and faffing about with a lot of other stuff that felt necessary but probably didn't actually progress anything.

Still, I got so distracted by writing up awesome essay questions that by the time I looked up I would've had to run to make it to the train I need to catch for my belly-dancing class. So, that's a second week on a row I skipped that. I did, however, finally tested out my new Wii Fit Plus. I have some minor gripes with it, mainly that I can't change from imperial to metric on measurements, and that I can't delete the previous owners' avatars as they are password protected. Still, the exercises themselves were fun the few I tried tonight, although I'm undeniably crap at most things. Still, it was enjoyable and I am certain I'll get on it regularly.

Right, I can't actually think straight any more (the weather is making me muzzy and headachy) so it's time to eat my last pancake and sign off for tonight.

It’s been very quiet around LJ for a while (at least on my flist, where are all you people?) but, for me, the other social networking platforms just don’t fill the hole of blogging and interacting and talking with people and writing about things at length, like LJ does. So, in a concentrated effort to be a part of the solution, not the problem, I’m doing something inspired by the 100 Things Challenge (sadly, it doesn’t seem to be updating any more so I haven’t officially signed up).

*pause for collective snort of disbelief.

Yes, it’s true. No, I don’t know if I’ll ever finish it but that’s not really the point for me. The point is to have a reason for creating LJ content and to do the things that I have signed up to do. I’ve divided the 100 things into two groups, so I’m doing 50 books I've read with short reviews (including work-related academic books) and 50 recipes I’ve tried/created with comments. Doing both with only a few months' 'backlog' so everything is recent stuff, not something I read/cooked years ago.

I’ll be posting both in the groups of 5 as I finish the books/recipes so watch out for those under the relevant tags.

***

Speaking of quiet LJ and creating content, I have two other ideas but I would like to know if anyone (read: YOU) would be interested in joining in and pimping them. Because otherwise I’ll be all sad and pathetic :(

Idea 1. Fandom-friendly friending meme, tentatively titled ‘Still LJ’ing!’ – I’ve seen a couple single-fandom ones going on and then I’ve seen some general ones, but a) I’m chronically multifandom and b) the latter sometimes appears to attract people who are vehemently anti-fandom, which makes me sad.

Idea 2. Anonymous porn meme – For people to talk about porn/erotica (fanfic, commercial fic, pics, art, clips, films etc.), e.g. likes, dislikes, turn-ons, turn-offs, recs, opinions, dirty jokes, serious commentary, requests, fills, random porny ficlets…

So… thoughts, comments, suggestions?

It's been a very, very good year for me, getting my PhD and a job but I've been so busy this autumn with the move, said job, new house and everything that I haven't had a chance to really internalise the changes properly. And then yesterday, after finishing all the marking the previous evening, and coming back from the shop in the morning, I sat down and completely unexpectedly burst into tears, because I was living in this beautiful house in a seaside town and I had job that I loved and was qualified for and that paid regularly meaning I didn't have to count every penny any more and I had my kitties and family and friends. And it was Christmas.

And I was, am, happy. And so thankful, to be where I am right now.

I wish you all the love this holiday time.

And so do my kitties )
