Graveyard Date on AO3

“I’m sorry,” Nick says, for the third time that evening. “I swear I’ll make…”

“It’s fine,” Monroe interrupts, also for the third time that evening. “Nick. It’s fine.” He doesn’t even look like he’s just saying it to make Nick feel better.

They’re crouching amidst wet grass behind a mausoleum in the graveyard in the middle of the night and Monroe is smiling, maybe a bit exasperated but mostly fond, his eyes all crinkled and kind and Nick… Nick feels terrible.

“Still,” he carries on, whispering so as not to be overheard. “I promised dinner and I knew you’d wanted to try that restaurant and now we’ll need to wait at least another month for a table.”

The place was new and extremely popular, and Monroe had been raving about their menu (all vegetarian of course) for weeks. Nick had called in at least three different favours to get them a table. It wasn’t a date but… It wasn’t not a date either, both of them careful not to put a label on the thing and pretending like going out to a fancy restaurant was completely normal and in no way significant.

But Nick had hoped.

And then someone started digging out fresh corpses and leaving the remains for the dog walkers to find.

Which is why they are here, peering at the shadows between gravestones instead stealing glances at each other over pumpkin ravioli.

“Then we’ll wait a month,” Monroe says, pulling Nick out of his thoughts. “Or three. I don’t mind.” He’s looking at Nick now, eyes serious, steady and Nick’s many things but he’s not stupid. And, well, the message isn’t that subtle. ‘I don’t mind wait for you,’ Monroe means.

Nick draws in a long breath, watches it escape in a white cloud. Then he reaches over and squeezes Monroe’s arm. “Okay,” he says. “Me neither.”

And well, the Grimm diaries had said nothing about Blutbad blushing but there it is. Nick’s not planning on adding that detail in either. This is just for him.

“And, well, in the meanwhile…” Monroe is digging into his bag, clearly trying to hide how flustered he is, but it’s not like Nick’s doing any better so he lets him.

“Here!” Monroe pulls out a thermos and a box of…

“Cookies?”

“Yep,” Monroe says, looking smug over Nick’s reaction. “And some proper coffee.”

Nick accepts the treats, hoping that whoever is dining on the dead bodies keeps quiet just for a little while longer. They tap their plastic mugs together, settling against the marble wall of the mausoleum. It may not be a fancy restaurant, but next to him, Monroe is a steady, warm presence, here, with Nick, despite everything.

And that’s better.
