At night, the sound of Soobin’s wings is a comfort. The dry, leathery rustle of them, the scratch of claws on floorboards as he moves from room to room, the steady inhale-exhale-inhale proof of his presence lull Yeonjun into that grey twilight between sleep and awake. Frost creeps up the windowpanes in a spiderweb of condensed pollution, while the four of them huddle in middle of the floor, buried under dirty blankets. Hunger gnaws at his insides and the constant worry for the kids eats at his heart but for a few hours every night there is peace. There is Soobin and the raspy whisper of his wings, the certainty of knowing that nothing can hurt them, not when the most dangerous thing out there is already in here, with them.
