Removed from everyday experience - it's noticeable that a lot of slashers, maybe the majority, enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, historical fiction or other things that are removed from everyday experience. I don't think that's only because of what's available on television and film; I think it is a deep desire for total escapism!! The fascinating thing about m/m sex for a female writer is not only that we don't experience it, but that we can never experience it. So we have to work hard at getting inside the heads of our characters in much the same way that the writer of Daleks or rabbits or mediaeval knights does. That provides part of the excitement/stimulus/challenge/mystery all of which have a part to play in eroticism (as opposed to 'pure' porn). I think, anyway!!
