Midnight Premiere on AO3

She knew who it was as soon as the knock woke her. The clock at the bedside table read seven minutes to midnight. She’d been asleep for less than an hour.

Getting up, Scully grabbed her robe, pulling it on as she walked through the apartment, turning small lights on in passing. She wasn’t surprised or annoyed, and briefly she wandered if she should fake either. Might make him smile.

She checked the peephole only because he would know if she hadn’t and nag her about safety for the next three days. As expected, Mulder stood on the hallway, holding two shopping bags. He grinned and did a little wave when he spotted the peephole cover being moved.

Scully rolled her eyes and opened the door.

“Trick or treat?” Mulder asked.

“I already handed out all the candy,” Scully said, motioning him to come in. There were a couple of new families in the apartment building, and it had been a busy evening of little monsters and superheroes. There had even been a couple of aliens. Scully may, or may not, have given them an extra helping.

“Ah, no,” Mulder said, putting the bags down on the counter. “I meant you. Pick.”

Scully raised an eyebrow, but it did nothing to stop the corner of her mouth lifting up as well. She pointed at the bag on the left. “That one.”

“Ta-dah!” Mulder opened it to reveal a carton of ice-cream and a bottle of wine.

“What’s the trick then?” Scully nodded at the other bag, already pulling out bowls and spoons.

Mulder peeled back the plastic to reveal a selection of horror films, some classics she recognised like Nosferatu or The Shining, some leaning heavily to the camp side. Killer Klowns from Outer Space sounded like an acquired taste.

Scully glanced at the clock on the wall. It was technically no longer Halloween. Then she looked at the tapes, at Mulder’s face, tired and a little sad, a little hopeful, underneath the puppy eyes and boyish charm. She watched as he opened the correct drawer to find the bottle opener, the correct cupboard to find wine glasses, moving through her kitchen with familiarity.

“This one first,” she said, picking up Gremlins and heading towards the sofa. There was a reason Mulder was here tonight, a story she’d get out of him with some patience. Which was fine. They had all night.
