wolf at the door on AO3
There’s no full moon, but this thing at his door is not Remus. Or maybe it is.
Whatever the Death Eaters had done to Remus during the long months of his captivity would’ve broken weaker men. But Remus came back alive. That’s all Sirius cares about. That he came back different… Well, it’s not like Sirius is the same person now than he was before. The war changed them all, some more than others.
Remus never knocks, never asks. He just shows up, and waits, until some sixth sense wakes Sirius up and pulls him to the door. Behind it, Remus stands like he’s in pain, body hunched over, yellow eyes staring from his human face, hands curled into claws. He smells like the night, like wet earth and regrets. Tension sings in every muscle, every tendon, and Sirius knows it’s from holding himself back.
Because despite it all, Remus doesn’t want to hurt people. It would kill him.
Sirius won’t let it. He can’t heal him, can’t unravel what was twisted, but he can do this. He can let Remus hurt him instead.
Wordlessly, he steps aside and lets Remus in.
