Well, I wrote this back in January but only getting around to posting now. Also claiming this for #11 for Snowflake Challenge 'create a fanwork' so now we're moving on with that as well. Who knows, maybe I'll actually get back to creating something new (posts, fics, art?) before my holiday is over. o_O

Title: Averment
Author:
kat_lair / Mistress Kat
Fandom: Star Trek: Discovery
Characters: Sylvia Tilly & Michael Burnham
Rating: G
Word count: 406
Disclaimer: Not mine, only playing.
Summary: It would be wrong to say that Tilly is expecting the question. She's just not not expecting it either.
Author notes: If this isn't canon for season 4, there's no justice in the world. The ficlet also counts as #22 of my 100 Fandoms Challenge. Joint AO3 Collection here.

It would be wrong to say that Tilly is expecting the question. She's just not not expecting it either.
Of course, because it's Michael, she manages to subvert both expectations and lack of them in one swell swoop.
"Lieutenant," she greets her, when Tilly gets to her quarters that evening and then before she's had a chance to do more than open her mouth, Michael tosses something at her.
Tilly catches it on reflex and one-handed, frankly a little impressed with herself. Then she looks at the shiny new insignia in her hand and has to sit down.
"What?"
Michael grins, bright and unrestrained. It's a good look on her. "C'mon," she says. "This can't be a surprise."
"This..." Tilly rubs her thumb over the innocuous piece of metal and high-end tech and feels a bit like crying. "This is a surprise." She wants to contact her parents and tell them. She wants to tell May.
Michael's smile softens into something more contained, something that is just for family. "You know you deserve it, right? Ten times over." She comes and sits next to her on the bunk. "We didn't even have to talk Admiral Vance into it or anything. He pretty much signed on the dotted line straightaway."
"We?" Tilly asks.
"Saru and I." Michael reaches over and plucks Tilly's Ensign's insignia off her uniform. "He's sorry to have missed the moment, but I told him you'd prefer it this way, with no audience." She catches her eye then, head tilted. "I wasn't wrong, was I?"
Tilly shakes her head. She wants to be able to smile and hug and accept congratulations, to celebrate with the rest of them. But for that she needs to get over this initial shock first.
"Thought so." Michael nods decisively and pins the Lieutenant's insignia on. Tilly's fingers drift up at their own volition to touch it again.
"Alright then," Michael says, getting up. "I'll see you on the Bridge tomorrow morning. After all," she adds over her shoulder, the grin firmly back in place again, "wouldn't be right to start my first mission as the Captain without my First Officer." With that, she winks - the nerve - and leaves, the door closing silently after her.
Tilly blinks. God damn her, god damn, she didn't even ask.
Then again, Tilly admits to herself after a few minutes caught somewhere between amused and annoyed, guess they both already knew the answer.
