Summary:
“Thanks for waiting,” Ramona says.
Destiny lifts her gaze and takes in Ramona’s familiar features. There are maybe a couple of new faint lines in the corners of her eyes, but otherwise she looks the same; flawless but in a way that still manages to be approachable, alive.
“It’s nothing.” Destiny shrugs, her reply quick and automatic. She tries a smile on for size but it comes out wobbly.
“It’s not nothing.” Ramona is serious now, the cake abandoned between them. She hesitates for a moment and then reaches over, placing her hands over Destiny’s where they are still wrapped around the coffee cup. “I didn’t think you’d ever want to see me again,” she says.
“I didn’t either.”
Author notes: Listen, I wrote majority of this in the immediate post-movie sapphic haze about three years ago in the middle of a lockdown. Then I picked it up and finished it like... last week. It is what it is; an ending they all deserved. Title obviously from Stand By Me by Ben E. King. Not betaed so if you do pick a glaring typo or a grammar boo-boo, feel free to tell me in the comments.
