Author notes:
I was looking for a prompt to write something for the first challenge of [community profile] sunshine_revival and then K.A.R.D. dropped Touch. And listen, they know what their target audience (the thirsty bis and pans) want and keep them well fed. I've been low key wanting more fic for this pairing and the MV gave me this brief frame at 2.09 where the (very hot) dancer looks like he's checking Taehyung out and... Well. Longer fic has been written on a flimsier premise. Unbetaed so if you spot a typo you absolutely should tell me about it.

like what you (don't) see on AO3

“He’s looking at you,” Matthew murmurs under the guise of bending down to hand over a bottle of water.

They’re on a break, the third of today, while the director confers with the camera crew. Jiwoo and Somin are getting their make-up retouched, and the dancers are sprawled here and there, chatting.

Matthew knows some of them, has said his hellos and caught up on some industry gossip, but he’s tired enough now that finding Taehyung and sitting quietly with him had sounded like a better idea.

“What? Who?” Taehyung isn’t even looking up, uncorking the bottle and drinking, all without taking his eyes off his phone. Matthew can see that he has a notes app open but not what’s written on it, not without leaning over and purposefully looking.

He’s tempted but middle of a MV shoot is probably not the time to get into a slap fight. Somin would tell both of them off and Taehyung would only take longer to be willing show what he’s working on.

“That dancer over there. The one with the tattoo.”

And that apparently is what finally catches Taehyung’s attention enough that he lifts his head. It’s probably petty and immature, but something inside Matthew bristles at that.
His presence alone didn’t do it but a tattooed dancer…

“Oh,” Taehyung says. He’s clearly spotted the guy in question, elbows leaning on his knees, the phone held loose in his hands as he checks him out. “Nice tattoo.”

Matthew glances over as well, finds the dancer still watching, that same dark, intense look in his eyes. Matthew knows that look. The guy is interested. Not obnoxious about it, not pushing, but making it clear nonetheless.

“Yeah, I guess,” he says. “A bit over the top.” It’s stupid. There’s nothing wrong with the tattoo. Taehyung is right, it looks good, the dancer himself looks good, moves well too, treats everyone with respect as far as Matthew has seen during the shoot. There’s no reason for him to feel this… Irritated. Uneasy.

But he does.

“I like it,” Taehyung says. “Suits him.”

The uneasy feeling doubles. Triples, when Taehyung pushes to his feet and slips his phone into his back pocket.

“The break’s not over yet,” Matthew says, like an idiot, scrambling up as well because… He didn’t expect this. He thought Taehyung would be mildly amused, distantly flattered, maybe even flustered, and he and Matthew would laugh together – not mean, no, just a small, shared moment like they’ve had countless times – over this dancer so blatantly checking Taehyung out, thinking he’d have a chance.

“I know.” Taehyung’s eyeroll is familiar. “I’m just going to go say hi. Unless…” He looks up at Matthew, in that quiet, serious way he sometimes gets despite the baseline of jokes and high energy. “There any reason I shouldn’t? Like… Do you know him? Is he an asshole or something?”

For a moment Matthew thinks about lying, about making up some rumour he heard about the guy. And then for another moment he thinks about just saying the truth, that he doesn’t want Taehyung to go because he wants Taehyung to stay with him, to pay attention to him, to share what he’s working on or talk about the comeback or his acting plans or ask after Matthew's brothers or… But that’s selfish. And for all his flaws, Matthew has worked hard at never being that.

“No,” he says. “No reason. I don’t know him. Seems like a good guy.” The words stick in his throat and the smile he gives Taehyung feels brittle around the edges. He can’t quite look him in the eye, but can’t not either, so his gaze ends up darting around like a frightened hare, bouncing between Taehyung’s face, the people around them, the floor…

Matthew…” There’s a lilt to Taehyung’s tone, one that Matthew doesn’t want to develop into an actual question. So he deflects instead.

“Go, go!” Matthew shoves him in the shoulder, grinning maniacally. “C’mon man, you deserve some fun after the last couple of years. Go get it.”

And with a one last, sharp glance, Taehyung goes, heading toward the dancer whose whole face lights up in a welcoming smile.

Matthew very purposefully walks in the opposite direction. He doesn’t need to watch to know how that conversation will go.
