I was told to watch it about two years ago. I got through about ten minutes of it and gave up. I hated all of them and I just didn't find it funny.
Then someone else assured me I had to keep watching, so I tried, and fell in love with it. Like you I found myself rooting for the characters. It was also exactly what I needed in 2020.
And, it only got better when Patrick arrived, he's such a lovely balance, not just to David but the whole family.
Ooh, good point that he's a balance for everyone! I'd even extend that to the rest of the cast. He serves a similar role that Stevie does in being the voice of reason, but he's less snarky and withholding, and he's the heart but rarely passive aggressive (like Jocelyn can be) or ditzy (like Twyla).
ETA: Not a dig at any of those characters, of course. I LOVE Stevie, Jocelyn and Twyla. Just saying that it's nice to have another personality in the mix.
