Meme Questions
Leitmotifs of the year:
- Ah yes, multifandom bitch at heart. Five new ones, returning to some old ones.
- K-pop is here to stay (pun intended), BTS and Stray Kids holding strong
- Did a lot of co-writing with dreamersdare but we did not manage to finish anything to actually post lol
- Writing as a coping mechanism. I dealt with the pre-moving stress by writing my way through Spooktober
Most popular story:
By every AO3 metric imaginable, Volcano takes the trophy with the kind of margin that leaves other fics weeping. It's an active fandom (in fact 4 of the most popular fics this year are in this fandom and the 5th one is BTS lol), one of, if not the most popular pairing, and I wrote and posted it as a very quick response to a canon event (release of song of the same name by Han Jisung who is the other half of this incredibly popular pairing). So the timing was perfect, and then it also got podficced by a pretty well known podficcer in that fandom some months later, and the results are predictable.
My best story this year:
if the sky that we look upon - I started this such a long time ago after seeing the movie and being filled with sapphic yearning for a happy ending. There's a lot here about repairing a friendship and accepting a shift to something else, and about a found family, that I'm really happy about. Honourable mention goes to little red, little dark which is a twisted retelling of Little Red Riding Hood in poetry format. Not for everyone but I'm pleased with it. Oh, and actually, softly, softly (from the shadows) because I think I got Moghedien's unhinged thought pattern down.
Hardest story to write:
Idk, nothing felt too hard this year. I did agonise over the ending of Primacy Effect for a long time and am still not fully happy with it but oh well.
Easiest story to write:
A lot of stories poured out pretty quickly, including all the Stray Kids ones because I have a lot of feelings about those boys at the moment. Special mention here to Volcano which I wrote in two sittings, and Whatever that was created because I legit dreamed the central dialogue exchange and then had to write out.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
I'm honestly pretty happy with the love my fics have gotten. There are a lot of short ficlets in the older fandoms that have very low hit counts but honestly that was to be expected, especially for the ones that are gen. I'm going to say Halloween Pride, though, because it's a continuation to if the sky that we look upon so I was hoping people who'd read that and loved it, would enjoy this too...
Most fun story to write:
respect the diabolical because demon!Shane is so fun to play with. Whatever because of the group shenanigans at the start. Hauntingly (Meet-)Cute because Pete is ridiculous. a familiar bond because I got to make up a lot
Fluffiest story:
Haha 90% of what I produce comes under here. Fizz, Bang, Pop is 10k of 'look at all my feelings about Felix and Chan' and has love confessions and emotional sex etc. lift you up (hold you when you fall) has a d/s vibe that is Extremely Soft. been saving it all for you ('cause only love can last) plays with the virgin sacrifice trope in a way that's all fluff. Sweater Weather gives you exactly what you expect from the title. Primacy Effect is all about friends to lovers confessions, as is Whatever and... Okay, I'll stop now. *gestures at fic back catalogue as a whole*
Most angsty story:
Senseless has character death which is something I almost never write, but it was a Spooktobed fic so... Maybe also wolf at the door, Necessary Evil, Remembrance. Volcano and Unintended have some emotional angst that gets resolved.
Sexiest story:
Hmm... Fizz, Bang, Pop is the only one with an explicit sex scene, which is apparently hot. lift you up (hold you when you fall) and true colours (shining through) have some ~tension~ that gets delayed in the first one and realised off page in the second one. Maybe Ablaze.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Eh... *hand-wave* There was some gore and gristle in Dinner Time. Delayed Reaction had some underaged incest, albeit only feelings and no doings. In Gift I wrote some Santa Claus slash based on the Posten Norge advert :D Co-dependent sibling incest is a recurring theme.
Biggest Disappointment:
Little progress on some of my bigger WIPs.
Biggest Surprise:
Honestly? The amount I actually managed to write this year, including actually finishing my self-imposed Spooktober challenge (albeit with some delay!) Story wise I did not expect Volcano to do what it did.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
By this point all my secrets are out already, yes? Marshmallow feelings often wrapped in d/s packaging. Oh, apparently true colours (shining through) reveals that I'm familiar with dyeing my hair. I know, a shocker, right? :D

Best summary?
I mostly use excerpts as summaries so a lot of this doesn't appeal, but I had to take a moment to laugh at my own joke here, sorry. So award for 'best summary' goes to... It’s the New Year and Felix is about to start it with a Bang. (Fizz, Bang, Pop) because I could not believe the fandom has not made more terrible puns of Bang Chan's name and felt duty bound to rectify this.
Best first line?

Ten hours before the song drops, Chan asks “Are you sure?”, Chan says “You don’t have to,” says “Whatever you want, Sungie. Your call,” both hands on Jisung’s shoulders, massaging him a little bit, the weight of it grounding. Ten hours before the song drops, Jisung thinks about backing out, about playing it safe but he’s so tired of doing that, knows he’s only still doing it for his own sake, to protect himself, not anyone else. Not Chan who told them as soon as the dating ban was lifted that there were no unspoken conditions, that he would accept and support whatever relationship they chose. Not his members who already know, who only care for their happiness. Not Minho who…
Not Minho, who met Jisung’s nervous, stuttering ‘Hyung, I think… I think I like boys as well as girls’ with an honest ‘me too’ all those years ago, who made him feel like it was okay, who helped him believe it really was. Not Minho, who would never withhold his smiles or his comfort no matter what Jisung fears. Not Minho who loves Jisung with teasing smiles and sideways looks, with quiet care and steady hands, who loves Jisung in ways that make him hope.
“Release it,” Jisung tells Chan.

“Innieeee!” Hyunjin screeches, wailing dramatically as he chases after him. “You can’t mean that! My love! My baby!” There’s a sound of running steps and a door slamming shut.
Chan winces a bit but the apartments are pretty well sound insulated. Which is good since…
“Oh my god,” Minho says, slapping a hand over Jisung’s mouth mid-note, trapping his flailing arms with ease. “There are people in every French-speaking country right now feeling inexplicably offended because of how you are murdering their language.”
Jisung forces Minho’s hand off his mouth for long enough to shout “But mon amour!!” before Minho manages to gag him again.
Felix falls onto the sofa, flopping there like a giggly, fluffy starfish and Chan has to stop himself from flopping right on top of him. Instead, he divests himself of his outerwear, and wanders into the kitchen for a bottle of water and the random detritus of his belongings that he’d dumped there before dinner.
Seungmin is raiding the cupboards for snacks and piling them into Changbin’s waiting arms.
“Didn’t you just eat?” Chan asks, amused.
Seungmin shrugs and drops another bag of something or another on top of the pile. “This is for later,” he says.
Chan glances at Changbin who is very determinedly examining the ceiling, refusing to meet his eyes.

With Star gone, mom gone, and grandpa gone, there is only him and Sam, rattling around an empty house after school, eating junk, watching trash on TV (which they now have thanks to mom’s new position) and doing the bare minimum of homework. It’s great, comfortingly familiar, to have his brother right there, with him.
Michael loves it.
It takes him months to realise why he loves it so much, that perhaps not all of the changes reverted with Max’s death. It's true that he’s no longer a vampire, or on his way of becoming one. He can’t fly, he doesn’t shy away from the sun, and, most importantly, he doesn’t look at people and feel a thirst rise in him like a tide, red and all-consuming, doesn’t look at his brother and want…
Except. Except he does.
Michael looks at his brother, at the dusting of freckles over his face, at the smooth skin of his arms, still skinny with youth but starting to gain the same kind of definition as Michael’s. He looks at Sam’s bright grin and the way his nose scrunches up, the lean twist of his body, hanging off the sofa or behind the wheel of the car and he…
And he wants.
He sits in his room, late at night, and digs the heels of his hands into his eye-sockets, supernova of pain and pressure keeping him put. In the bath, next door, Sam is singing along to the radio. Michael bites at his lip until he draws blood, until the truth of what he is and what he must do sits on his tongue, tasting like a bad penny.

Most angsty story:
Senseless has character death which is something I almost never write, but it was a Spooktobed fic so... Maybe also wolf at the door, Necessary Evil, Remembrance. Volcano and Unintended have some emotional angst that gets resolved.
Sexiest story:
Hmm... Fizz, Bang, Pop is the only one with an explicit sex scene, which is apparently hot. lift you up (hold you when you fall) and true colours (shining through) have some ~tension~ that gets delayed in the first one and realised off page in the second one. Maybe Ablaze.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Eh... *hand-wave* There was some gore and gristle in Dinner Time. Delayed Reaction had some underaged incest, albeit only feelings and no doings. In Gift I wrote some Santa Claus slash based on the Posten Norge advert :D Co-dependent sibling incest is a recurring theme.
Biggest Disappointment:

Biggest Surprise:
Honestly? The amount I actually managed to write this year, including actually finishing my self-imposed Spooktober challenge (albeit with some delay!) Story wise I did not expect Volcano to do what it did.

By this point all my secrets are out already, yes? Marshmallow feelings often wrapped in d/s packaging. Oh, apparently true colours (shining through) reveals that I'm familiar with dyeing my hair. I know, a shocker, right? :D

Best summary?
I mostly use excerpts as summaries so a lot of this doesn't appeal, but I had to take a moment to laugh at my own joke here, sorry. So award for 'best summary' goes to... It’s the New Year and Felix is about to start it with a Bang. (Fizz, Bang, Pop) because I could not believe the fandom has not made more terrible puns of Bang Chan's name and felt duty bound to rectify this.

Your call,” both hands on Jisung’s shoulders, massaging him a little bit, the weight of it grounding. Ten hours before the song drops, Jisung thinks about backing out, about playing it safe but he’s so tired of doing that, knows he’s only still doing it for his own sake, to protect himself, not anyone else. Not Chan who told them as soon as the dating ban was lifted that there were no unspoken conditions, that he would accept and support whatever relationship they chose. Not his members who already know, who only care for their happiness. Not Minho who…
Not Minho, who met Jisung’s nervous, stuttering ‘Hyung, I think… I think I like boys as well as girls’ with an honest ‘me too’ all those years ago, who made him feel like it was okay, who helped him believe it really was. Not Minho, who would never withhold his smiles or his comfort no matter what Jisung fears. Not Minho who loves Jisung with teasing smiles and sideways looks, with quiet care and steady hands, who loves Jisung in ways that make him hope.

“Innieeee!” Hyunjin screeches, wailing dramatically as he chases after him. “You can’t mean that! My love! My baby!” There’s a sound of running steps and a door slamming shut.
Chan winces a bit but the apartments are pretty well sound insulated. Which is good since…
“Oh my god,” Minho says, slapping a hand over Jisung’s mouth mid-note, trapping his flailing arms with ease. “There are people in every French-speaking country right now feeling inexplicably offended because of how you are murdering their language.”
Jisung forces Minho’s hand off his mouth for long enough to shout “But mon amour!!” before Minho manages to gag him again.
Felix falls onto the sofa, flopping there like a giggly, fluffy starfish and Chan has to stop himself from flopping right on top of him. Instead, he divests himself of his outerwear, and wanders into the kitchen for a bottle of water and the random detritus of his belongings that he’d dumped there before dinner.
Seungmin is raiding the cupboards for snacks and piling them into Changbin’s waiting arms.
“Didn’t you just eat?” Chan asks, amused.
Seungmin shrugs and drops another bag of something or another on top of the pile. “This is for later,” he says.
Chan glances at Changbin who is very determinedly examining the ceiling, refusing to meet his eyes.

Michael looks at his brother, at the dusting of freckles over his face, at the smooth skin of his arms, still skinny with youth but starting to gain the same kind of definition as Michael’s. He sits in his room, late at night, and digs the heels of his hands into his eye-sockets, supernova of pain and pressure keeping him put. In the bath, next door, Sam is singing along to the radio. Michael bites at his lip until he draws blood, until the truth of what he is and what he must do sits on his tongue, tasting like a bad penny.

I enjoyed the Spooktober challenge last year. I'll see how I am in October but if I'm up for it I may do it again.

I liked these both for very different reasons. a familiar bond was so well written and written by somebody that has cats. It was obvious to me very soon into it that Spencer was a cat but I loved it.
Oh, Lost Boys. I'm so glad that you wrote this. Still my favourite vampire movie and this is bittersweet but with potential hope.

That is a ridiculous extra challenge for Spooktober :D As you know I'm thinking of doing something for February but I don't want it to interfere with my extra stuff for Beat the Drum so I don't know.
Also, I have something that we should collaborate on in our writing week? Thanks for the Venom (which I added to this week), needs some more stuff. Have mentioned it to DD and she just laughed :d
