All the Worlds – Firefly (post-Serenity) – Gen
Summary: When River announces that she intends to become a shepherd, the remaining crew of Serenity are doubtful. After all, how can a girl with a troubled mind bring peace to others? When Mal questions her sudden decision, River reveals that she is following Shepherd Book’s advice – advice that he is still apparently giving her. Simon fears he is losing his sister to madness once more, while Jayne swears up and down that he has seen the old Shepherd walking Serenity’s corridors at night. Alliance mind control or a ghost? Whatever it is, the instructions River is receiving are turning into the biggest job they’ve ever had. Following a map River draws in her sleep the crew of Serenity travel from planet to planet, chasing answers and gathering clues, trying to find the mythical Root of All the Worlds.

“It’s a boy,” River says.
Zoe startles, her arms instinctively curling around her belly. “River,” she says. “I didn’t hear you.”
River sits next to her on the co-pilot’s chair. She looks deceptively fragile, feet up on the console, bare toes gripping the edge.
“I heard you.” She smiles at Zoe, quick and genuine. “And him. Heard him too. He’s got his daddy’s voice.”
Zoe wants to be angry, because River has no right – no right – to know that. But instead she just settles deeper into Wash’s chair and gazes out into the stars, arms still cradling her unborn son. She’s tired of being angry, doesn’t think she can find it in herself anymore.
“You will. When you need to, you will.”
In the dark of the space Zoe breathes. And breathes.
That’s enough for now.
It’s only much later, after River has left, when it occurs to her that not once had she questioned the truth of River’s words. The baby growing under Zoe’s heart is a boy and he will sound just like his father.
The tears, when they finally come, feel like rain after a long draught.

Well, I'm out of the slings, but I still can't wash my hair, and it's getting real icky. :( Would/could you help me with that, hon? If you can, Saturday would be good :)
