The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass...

Wheel of Time Book Club?

Robert Jordan's ginormous Wheel of Time series and I go way back, all the way to my teenage years when I devoured the first few books in parts as Finnish translations (they were chopped up on account of being So Fucking Long). Then I moved countries, picked it up again in original English but failed to finish it on account of a) life and b) it being a series that never ended. I mean, it sure did, and [personal profile] moth2fic  eventually donated the whole series to me and I told everyone I was going to read it as soon as I finished my PhD. I finished my PhD almost a decade ago. I have not (re)read the series.

Now, however, there are two things happening. 1) A TV series is coming out. 2) [personal profile] annathecrow was foolish enough to express mild interest in re-read efforts with me. On account of that, we were wondering if Anyone Else had such an Interest. Wheel of Time Book Club? Anyone? Share emotions, revisit questionable teenage choices or discover the world for the first time, cringe your way through the worst of it together and fall in love with the characters again?

You in?

YESSS!

I also need/want to do a re-read and having something like this will light a fire and keep me going.

A comm sounds like a good idea. You could do it out of your journal, but the comm offers other options, like not having to be responsible for doing every single little thing yourself (unless you want to) (and yes, I'm talking from experience on that, lol!). I don't know how you're going to lay it out as far as how much reading per discussion, but a half dozen or more weekly posts over 12 books (if we end up going that far) is going to be A LOT. Just something to consider.

And there's always the option of extending the purview of the comm if you/we really get into the show, like discussing the eps (alone or in conjunction with the books and the decisions they made to keep/not keep some things), and even meta or fanworks. So, yeah, my two cents. *g*

Don't think I'm not considering it! Boyfriend I think has the books already too.

They ~are big books! I can't recall the length of the chapters, but I was thinking x number of chapters per week, or something like that.

I've already pulled mine off the shelf (I didn't want to not be able to find it when the time came, lol) and I'm all set when you fire off the starting pistol, or whatever. *g*

Clearly I can't join in since you have my books... I really hope you enjoy them! Without giving any spoilers I will say it's a series I never planned to re-read. The endings for all the characters and themes were convincingly resolved, and I don't think I'd be able to follow their 'journeys' with as much pleasure, knowing the ends, even the good ends. See what your re-reader thinks! I'm not counting your re-reading of the first few books. I would like to be in on the discussions because the series is definitely still alive in my mind and I've never had the chance to discuss it with anyone!

*tentatively raises hand* If it's alright to read those chopped-up translations, as I now have easy access to them. My childhood local library (which is now my current local library) hung onto the books and they're right there where they were twenty years ago...

Fingers crossed you get a reply! A dedicated community sounds good too. Besides the books, just thinking about communities makes me nostalgic. My fandom activity on LJ was mostly in comms, but I haven't really seen active fandom comms on DW.

Okay. I'll wait to hear what you've decided.

Nice. I joined the comm. I also started with the first novel (just one page) and it's much more dramatic than I remembered. :D

Blast from the past... I remember refusing to start this because it didn't end. My brother loved them, but I was adamant in my refusal to read anything that wasn't finished.

(An adamance I should have remembered when presented with the first GoT book...)
