Meme: Top Ten Songs Now

Versions of this meme/music sharing have been going around for ever so I don’t even pretend to know where I saw it. What I do know is that, thanks to the amount of writing I’ve been doing lately, my iTunes and MP3 player have been an almost constant feature of my days.

I would also love to know what my Flist is listening now so if anyone feels inclined to do this that would be fantastic. And if you feel like uploading some of your songs that would be pretty darn cool too.

So, list you Top Ten Songs now and explain why they are on the list.

Mistress Kat’s Top Ten Songs Of The Moment

America (Closing Time) by Allen Ginsberg and Tom Waits
Ok, this may not strictly qualify as a ‘song’ but there’s music. And one of the best pieces of political poetry ever, still relevant today.
My national resources consist of two joints of
marijuana millions of genitals an unpublishable
private literature that goes 1400 miles an hour
and twenty-five-thousand mental institutions.

The Lady With The Braid by Dory Previn
This manages to be sweet and wistful without resulting to clichés. It’s about trying to fit another person into your life, wanting them there but unsure if you should and whether it’ll actually work out. Makes me smile.
Do you care to stay til sunrise?
It's completely your decision.
It's just the night cuts through me like a knife, like a knife.
Do you care to stay a while and save my life?

Genius by Warren Zevon
I have an unashamed thing for his voice, it goes straight through me, pushing every single button on its way. Plus, excellent lyrics, layered and on the right side of eccentric.
Your protégé don't care about art
I'm the one who always told you you were smart
You broke my heart into smithereens
And that took genius

Hero by Darren Hayes
Yes, ok, laugh it up, it’s Darren Hayes from the former Savage Garden fame. But I liked them. A lot. With all their pretty boy appeal, ambiguous lyrics, leather and eye liner and pierced nipples. And the RPS (look, some of it was excellent, no, seriously, I could hook you up). The music is upbeat and poppy but the lyrics are something quite else. (They’re all about Rodney McKay, ok? And one day I will make a fanvid to this song and you will see and rue that day.)
Ladies and gentlemen listen up please
I don't want to be your hero
(No, I am not open parts of me are broken)
Do yourself a favor
Save yourself
Don't pick me find someone else
(Why'd you want to bother find yourself another)

Torture Me by Metric
It’s the best BDSM theme song I’ve heard. Hits the mind set perfectly. If you have anything better, I need to know about it. Like yesterday.
Bring me meat, bring me fire, one backless strapless copper thread gown, kiddy kiddy catch one.
Bring turpentine, I can't stand by high streets that fight the bland,
I've got to bite the hand; so if I find a piece of mind, torture me.
If I seem too serene, torture me.

Hands In the Sky (Big Shot) by Straylight Run
It’s raw and angry, desperate yet defiant. To me this is about war and battle and getting up to fight even though you know that you’re going to lose.
Big shot screaming, "Put your hands in the sky,"
He says, "Give it up boy, give it up or you’re gonna die,
You'll get a bullet in the back of the neck,
In the back of the neck right between the eyes."

Post Blue by Placebo
It’s about addiction and need, about relationships and people who are not necessarily healthy to you but you cannot, will not, give them up either. It’s been on almost constant repeat on my MP3 player for the last week. There’s a fic there and I need to tear it out.
It’s in the water baby, it’s in the pills that pick you up
It’s in the water baby, it’s in the special way we fuck
It’s in the water baby, it’s in your family tree
It’s in the water baby, it’s between you and me

Fast Cars by U2

It’s U2, what more do you need? The band that can seemingly do no wrong. Well, no, they can, the recent re-release of 'One' with Mary J. Blige being a prime example of all kinds of wrong. What were you thinking, Bono? I mean really, it’s not like you needed the money. I certainly did not need to have that song so spectacularly butchered. But anyway, this song is all about the lyrics to me, clever and unexpected and like, I don’t know *flails* Just listen, dammit.

My garden's overgrown

I go out on my belly crawling

I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC

I got the nightly news

To get to know the enemy

My Skin by Natalie Merchant
This is on the list for the simple reason that it can make me cry. Gorgeous, haunting, sad.
I'm a slow dying flower
Frost killing hour
The sweet turning sour
And untouchable

I Know by Jude
Unlike most everything else on the list, this song is not about the lyrics so much it is about the feel of it, the music and the singing. It just, it kills me a bit, every time. At the moment I’m also completely immersed in Supernatural fandom and this is The Song for Sam and Dean, or Sam/Dean, however you choose to interpret it. My desire to vid it cannot be explained in words, it’s more like desperate flailing and pointing and clutching of heart. Unfortunately I do not have either the materials, the time or the skills to do it but you have to trust me on this one, in my head it is beautiful and broken and perfect. I am possibly just a bit too obsessed by this song at the moment but I’m sure it’ll pass. Eventually.
You've got such a pretty smile
It's a shame the things you hide behind it
Let 'em go
Give it up for a while
Let 'em free and we will both go find it

Feel free to download, everything is in Megaupload and in MP3 format (except Fast Cars which is WMA – apologies for that). If you do, please comment, I’d love to hear what you think.

Those were my top ten songs of the moment. What are yours?
