I thought you got him really well during the start of the fic when he was rather harsh, I don't think him being nastier would have sat quite right, and of course being nicer wouldn't have been Ray. But I don't think showing him slighty more compassionate after a scene like that would be OOC (for me anyway), just made him seem human, which was a good thing.
