Uhhh, hi. Work is ridiculous. We shall not discuss the number of my overtime hours or the number of smacks [personal profile] moth2fic  and [personal profile] pushkin666 are ready to dole out. Both are high.

Let's just do a little catch-up on them Snowflake challenges.

Challenge #9: Brag about yourself

Have literally done this all weekend which involved writing a promotion letter and then writing it again, twice. It was a lot of transformational leadership and strategic thinking etc. But by necessity I also did a some genuine reflection and in summarising a lot of my experience and resulting key strengths I concluded: "I have spent much of my professional and personal life in the ‘in between’, in the intersections of countries, disciplines, identities and roles. While undeniably a cause for both discomfort and friction at times, such liminal spaces have given me room to grow and shaped my leadership. I seek and make connections, and work to build bridges across perceived boundaries, whether disciplinary, departmental, or those arising from individual differences." So there's that.

I'm proud of my fanfic. I'm proud of my poetry and getting some of it published.

I'm proud of being where I am, who I am, professionally and personally, when it hasn't always been easy.

Challenge 10#: Fandom love letter

I don't have energy or creativity to write anything very witty here so I'll keep it brief. I love fandom because it is an endless source of joy, creativity, distraction and emotional catharsis (for every emotion, from horny to transcendent awe to despair to wheezing hilarity to rage). I love fandom because it's given me a place to belong and people to belong with and to belong to. I love fandom because it's made me learn and challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone while at the same time offering the most comforting of zones to hide in when I need it. I love fandom because fandom makes me love being me.

The more observant among you may have noticed that I've skipped from Challenge #6 to #8. That's because Challenge #7 was about creating your own challenge, I couldn't think of anything and honestly, right now everything feels like a challenge already (it has not been the best week work and mental health wise) so I've bypassed that. I see people posting lovely 'do something nice for yourself and others' types of 'challenges' and that's lovely but doing much of anything beyond current activities, even if it's lovely, feels like a struggle.

Anyway. It's a weekend, I've tipped over to overtime for this week again ([personal profile] moth2fic I'm going to need that slap, oh, by Monday...) and am not feeling great about it. Currently waiting on some takeaway pizza, which I plan on eating whilst watching the most mind-numbing thing I can find on Netflix.

Time therefore for Challenge #8 of

which is to create a Wishlist of Things for Me Pls. I'm going to keep this fannish for obvious reasons, including the one that no one can stop time and just give me extra month between now and February. Anyway.

Things That Would Make Kat Happy:
  • Any further creative works based on my fics. Mixes, art of any kind, podfics, vids, anything... Honestly, I can't get over how amazing that is and every single piece like that I've gotten is treasured. My policy basically is 'yes please, show me the shiny'
  • Comments on any of my fics. I would say this is a no-brainer for any fic writer but then I was proven wrong! :D But I adore comments on my fics
  • Any fic that caters to my specific tastes, beloved tropes/kinks, fave pairings. If I've written it, it's very likely that I want to read it, because significant proportion of my own fics have been written specifically to scratch an itch. Last year's Chocolate Box letter details both likes and hard limits in general but in summary: slow burn, friends to lovers, d/s vibe are my Top Three Tropes. Put them together and I'm almost guaranteed to love it
  • Any type of bdsm!AU fic that isn't just pwp. This trope is essentially my favourite and I tend to give almost anything with that premise a go, regardless of whether I know the fandom or not. I have some pairings where I have Very Strong Preference on who's the d and who's the s but others where I can enjoy it either way.
  • Recommendations for feelgood movies or series on Netflix. Or any really, but right now want something happy making.
  • Recommendations for Spotify playlists, particularly any fanmixes. I like almost all types of music with the exception of techno/dance (unless I'm literally in a club, those were the nights eh) or death/black metal (if it's so screamy I can't make out the lyrics then it's not for me). Preference for pop-punk and singer-songwriter stuff.

Okay, going to finish there.

was to promote canon/talk about a part of canon that you love. And I thought I would take this opportunity to pimp two things I've loved lately, without spoilers. Although there may be some in comments in case people get chatty...

Happy Friday!

This week I've only worked the hours I'm actually paid for and haven't panicked about everything that needs doing by Feb too much. My body is being Very Frustrating right now though, which has put a kabosh on some planned exercise. But am spending the w/e with H and mostly just eating things she puts in front of me and catching up with DW. Also, going to finish s3 of Star Trek Discovery (Captain Tilly!) tonight so that's soothing.

Challenge #4 of

was to create some goals. I don't think I'm going to get any more detailed than I did in an earlier post, but to recap:
  • Survive work by prioritising ruthlessly and staying as emotionally distanced from everything as possible
  • Take back some of your 90h overtime, or failing that, try not to let it grow. If it goes above 100h someone needs to slap me on the head.
  • Read some books in addition to the comfort candy of fanfic
  • Write things, maybe conquer [community profile] getyourwordsout 150k goal on second go
  • Try some of your recipes as per [community profile] cookbook_challenge
  • Keep doing some exercise when you can and body allows. Stretching makes your back less angry. Walking/jogging makes your brain less angry.

Challenge #2 of

was to interact with someone new. Which I have achieved by dropping comments on not just some [community profile] snowflake_challenge participants but also on the [community profile] getyourwordsout intro post.

Other exciting activities today have included a vidcall with my god parents, finishing a fic, doing some other writing, reading a book chapter, washing dishes, vidcall with H, some exercise and stretching, absolutely dreading going back to work tomorrow (don't wanna!). Current plan is to just keep entirely emotionally dissociated from work so as not to let it stress me. What could go wrong?

Things in the vague plan/goals/good intentions on the road to perdition list
  • Writing
  • Signed up to [community profile] cookbook_challenge  because my recipes are staring at me accusingly. Only at the 1-2 recipes per month though which should be achievable. Going to pick one this week.
  • Fanworks round-up meme
  • Many photo dump posts (Aug-Dec, you've been warned)
  • Jogging, achievable atm because no pain and also new shiny purple trainers. Sadly I did manage to wash my headphones so need to get me new ones
  • Survive work
  • Reading books

So, in a probably doomed attempt of Posting and Interacting and Doing Something Else Besides Work Please God, I've decided to have... Maybe... A little go at the...

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner featuring a snow-covered green bench in a snowy park. Text: Snowflake Challenge: 1-31 January.

For the first time ever. I've given it a pass in the past because the timing is murder for anyone working in HE but screw everything this year, and my 90h of overtime in particular. So there.

The first challenge was an introduction so I took the opportunity to write a new Welcome Post and update my profile ever so slightly. Achieve!

In other news, I am WRITING AGAIN HALLELUJAH. Which is both fantastic and depressing, because it took me 1.5 weeks of recovery/holiday to get to the point where words were cooperating again. And now I want to write All The Things but I know that from Monday work is going to try to kick my ass so hard again :( Anyway, I have signed up to another try at [community profile] getyourwordsout. I did not achieve my goal last year because 2020, but I did write 86k of fic anyway so fuck you universe. There will be the usual fanworks round-up meme soon. Well, this month?
