Last day of recs for this round! I hope you’ve found something to read. Turns out I still have recs leftover so I’ll probably be back with another week of them in a few months… But for now, here’s the last mixed bag :)

Common Law

Other Cities Don't Know Me - Wes/Travis, Stargate Atlantis fusion with background McKay/Sheppard. The Atlantis expedition requires a law enforcement contingency. Guess who gets the call. This is delightful romp through all the best SGA tropes, including ‘mortal peril’ and ‘not-really-sex-pollen’ and ‘mortal peril number 302483’ and so on.

Say It With a Hug - Wes/Travis. The week’s therapy homework to hug your partner at every opportunity does indeed lead to some positive results. Lovely bit of angst in the middle as well, Wes’ voice is good in this.

Windows series - Wes/Travis, AU. There are two parts to this AU where Travis and Wes are strangers until Travis starts climbing through Wes' window when drunk. And then he starts doing it when sober too. Adorable rom-com, complete with cats! It is now my head canon that Wes is made to have cats.

The Hobbit

Beneath the Mountains Music Woke - Bilbo/Thorin. In which Thorin has a realisation and then proceeds to not do anything about it for stupid reasons. Lots of angst and pining and misunderstandings and a delicious wallow in the 'oh but I am not worthy, I have nothig to give, he's better off without me' trope. The epilogue and chapters leading up to it don't shy away from the dark under-current of Thorin's gold sickness either. Leaves a good deal for reader's imagination. Highly recced.

Para Bellum - Bilbo/Thorin. Hobbits aren't quite as helpless as the Dwarves thought... In fact, they're secretly excellent fighters. This hits my 'hidden competency' kink and hits it hard. Utterly awesome.

Lord of the Rings

Lovers' Day - Frodo/Sam. Someone is courting Frodo on Lovers' Day by leaving him all sorts of thoughtful gifts... This is just romantic fluff but again I liked all the details. The sex scene features virgin!Frodo so there's maybe a bit more blushing and fumbling than I can read without rolling my eyes, but it's sweet no doubt about that, so if you like romance and feelings and slow love-making go, go!

The Grand Annual Four Farthings Show - Frodo/Sam. This is long. Like loooooooooong. Like 'takes 124k to cover 3 days' long. It's pre-canon and has Sam and Frodo, along with every other hobbit in the area, attending a local agricultural/craft show/fair. The author tags this with 'hobbit social history' and it definitely is that. There's a lot of extremely detailed description of foods, crafts, animals, fairground rides, games, and yes, feeeeeeeelings (pining, so much pining) which some people will probably get bored with but I found delightfully interesting. Pure comfort read.

Verisimilitude - Merry/Pippin, modern university AU. Adorable romp around the 'pretend to be couple' trope, somehow in character despite the complete change in setting. Really liked it.

Rizzoli & Isles

When Maura Isles Made It Rain - Rizzoli/Isles. Here's a show that I've been watching a lot lately. Buddy-cop genre but with women and the banter and friendship are key to the fic too, although there's a fair bit of angst too as it deals with the aftermath of Jane going undercover us a high-class hooker and Maura as her client... Enjoyable read, realistic too in that change in feelings doesn't come easy.

These Bridges We've Built (illustrated) - Erik/Charles, Azazel/Mystique, kid-fic. In which Azazel and Mystique rely on Uncle Charles to keep their offspring safe. Turns out that nothing brings people together quite like a teleporting baby, and the shared need to keep people safe. I loved everyone's characterisation in this and the layers of comic and movie canon that are twisted around. Angst, humour, adventure, feels, wonderful illustrations. Highly recced.

So, a while ago I also got into Common Law, which was sadly only ran for one season but had awesomely slashy buddy-cop premise. No really, they’re in couple’s therapy, it’s great. If you get a chance, do check it out. Here are some fic recs for it!

Common Law

5 Things Wes Doesn't Like Because of Travis - Wes & Travis. This is tagged as pre-slash but it is pretty mild so you can read it as friendship fic if you prefer. Travis keeps lists of things Wes doesn’t like. Quite a few of them have something to do with Travis, and not the way you’d expect. This was a lovely exploration of Wes’ awkward ways of showing he cares. Plus lists! I love lists :D

Accidentally (Committed) - Wes/Travis. In which Travis accidentally moves in. This is one of my favourite tropes and really nicely done here with casual intimacy and freak outs and banter.

Breakfast At Tiffany's - Wes/Travis, AUs/tropes. This is essentially a rollicking good ride through five beloved fandom tropes: soul bond, handcuffed together, pretend couple, friends with benefits, and kid fic. Fun and sexy and awesome, really enjoyable. I would have happily read more about each scenario but at 8k this is a good length as it is so I won’t complain!

Bruised and Battered - Wes/Travis. Wes is beaten up badly. Travis helps him cope with the aftermath. Lovely h/c.

King Of The Nile - Wes/Travis. Wes is denying himself happiness. Travis notices. And then he does something about it. Ah, but this is lovely and you just ache for Wes and his guilt complex and brittle control. The ending is palpably fragile and tense, until the happiness of course.

Make it Work - Wes & Travis. You could read this at pre-slash if you preferred, but works beautifully as a friendship fic about dysfunctional families and difficulty of talking about things that are painful to us. Perfect balance of humour, banter and genuine caring.

Paranormal Romance For Dummies - Wes/Travis, supernatural AU. In which Wes is a vampire and Travis is a werewolf and that isn't the reason for their problems. Though it does explain the mutual territorial possessiveness... This is fun and sexy!

Seven Digits - Wes/Travis, AU. In which Wes drunk texts a stranger. Who texts back. This is a delightful meet-cute which caters to my love of epistolary fic too because text message romance!

The Smartest Thing To Do - Wes/Travis. In which there are some cases and Travis is very good at compartmentalising. Until he isn’t. I like how the ending is both unexpected and isn’t, because on hindsight you could see it coming :D

the wedding march - Wes/Travis. Going undercover as a couple to lure in a thieving wedding planner turns out to be not as easy as Wes thought. And he always thought it would be complicated as fuck. Twisty, difficult emotions wrapped in everyone's favourite cliche. Delicious.

Another show that I really got into this year was Community. I mainlined all seasons of it within a couple of months, and predictably fell hard for Abed/Troy because BFFs and pillow fights and neuro-atypical characters and all kinds of other diversity, and Drematorium and and and ughhh so amazing.

Applied Social Consequences of Group Dynamics - Troy/Abed. The days before and after Troy leaves. This is both amazing and heart=breaking and utterly realistic in portrayal of what it is like when you want someone to stay just as genuinely you want them to go.

Eleven Ways Trobed Didn’t Happen (Or One Way It Did) - Troy/Abed. Exactly what it says in the tin. Each scenario is lovely in its own way and true to the characters. Number 7 is probably my favourite. Or number 2. Although 9 is awesome too and... Yeah, love all of them :D

Five people Abed loses, and one he doesn't - Abed/Troy. What it says on the tin basically. Abed characterisation is great in this and it’ll break your heart and then fix it.

Five times Troy didn’t tell Abed he loved him, and one time he did - Troy/Abed. Ties closely to various episodes so make sure you're relatively fresh with canon to get the most out of this. Achy in the best way, and the ending is perfect.

Homoeroticism in Science Fiction Television - Troy/Abed, various other pairings, sort of... In which Troy and Abed RPG some of the great slash pairings in genre TV. Awesome on several levels.

Impressions - Troy/Abed. In which there are Buffy impressions and resurfacing of wiped memories. Short and sweet. Plus I would love to see Abed do a Buffy impression!

Investigative Romantic Calligraphy - Troy/Abed. Writing on skin and flouting the conventions of the genre! Awesome and the first is one of my best loved kinks as well.

I Try and Just Kick It, but What Can I Do? - Troy/Abed. In which there is star gazing, Deep Questions, and some scary realisations. I love Troy’s voice and characterisation in this.

the first nonwhite men to make it to the end - Troy/Abed. In which the Zombie Apocalypse episode gets a more realistic ending. And Abed and Troy are there to see it. The fic takes an episode twists it from horror-genre-piss-take right back to horror-tragedy. Awesome, painful.

The Tauntaun Solution - Troy/Abed. Sharing of warmth and mortal peril (and Lucky Charms) will get you every time. Immensely enjoyable read.

Okay, so I’m not quite done with Daredevil yet. I should probably watch it one of these days as well, eh? Oh well, there’s some other stuff here too.

Daredevil (TV)

Bang Bang - Matt/Foggy, AU. This is just unashamedly adorable and romantic, full of flirting and banter and feels. Matt is Matt, except happier, and Foggy is a cop who can’t quite make himself arrest him. There’s slow dancing and jewellery and Matt being a little creeper. The perfect cure for any sadness or bad days.

De Nile - Matt/Foggy. Foggy’s crush on Matt is so painfully obvious and Matt spends years of listening to his heartbeat and not saying anything because he’s not interested. He isn’t. Not really, not like that, not like Foggy deserves, like… Okay so maybe Matt’s viewpoint changes slightly as the years go by. This is just unashamedly… romantic, I think is the word, but the real kind, so tender it’s painful.

Encounters - Matt/Foggy, + The Avengers. The Avengers really want to get to know the Daredevil. The Daredevil does not feel the same. Hilarious. Also, Tony's reaction to the whole thing is entirely in character. You get to the end and nod because yes, this is exactly what Stark would do.

Just Our Hands Clasped So Tight - Matt/Foggy. Matt is a tactile guy. A great Foggy pov, and a long (10k), gorgeous ‘from friends to lovers’ fic that leaves you aching in a really good way. I love how clear Matt’s fears and vulnerabilities are even when he thinks he’s hiding them.

Just Wanna Take Him Home - Matt/Foggy, hooker AU. In which Foggy mostly escorts little old ladies and then is hired to cuddle a lawyer on the regular basis. Adorable fic with lot of touchy-feely (literally) feelings, soft blankets and achy angst.

Something Dumb to Do - Matt/Foggy. Ahhh 33k of ‘marriage of convenience’ fic :D Because it makes total sense to get married so that Foggy will never have to testify against Matt. Everything you love about ‘fake relationship turns into a real one’ trope: feelings, rings, family, kisses, misunderstandings, kidnappings. Okay, so the last one is a Daredevil speciality but it adds flavour. Delightful!

Tell You My Sins - Matt/Foggy. Being the Daredevil has its consequences, even to Matt's sex life... Oh my yes, this is hot with an excellently handled bdsm/rough sex theme. Matt's uncertainty is well portrayed and in character. Delicious!

Lord of the Rings

Moonlight in Minas Tirith - Merry/Pippin. In which there's a brief respite in Minas Tirith before the final battle, and Merry and Pippin have time to reunite. And move forward. In character, cute and sexy!

Star Trek AOS

Our Life Is Not a Movie or Maybe - Kirk/McCoy, background Spock/Uhura, modern Hollywood AU. In which Bones is a script writer sitting on an indie hit, and Kirk is a hotshot director desperate to make it happen. This is excellent insight into industry, where every character is interesting and well crafted (look out for some familiar names from TNG!) and every subplot as interesting as the main one. Long, satisfying read, thoroughly recced.

X-Men First Class

Math Reasons - Charles/Eriks, modern university AU. This is adorable and hits my ‘from friends to lovers’ button hard. The boys still have their powers and their differences, Charles is still in the wheelchair, things are not still not easy. But there’s also college parties and friendship and gleeful sexual experimentation (and much kudos for making this realistic with a disabled characters). Told in two timelines which jarred me first but actually ends up working well. All the supporting characters are awesome too. Long and highly recced.

kat_lair: (GEN - summer cliffs)

All Daredevil today. Because bff pairings are my drug of choice always and forever.

Daredevil (TV)

come take my pulse (the pace is on a runaway train) - Matt/Foggy. In which there is almost drunken sex and boys being idiots and then sweet first time sober sex. Adorable.

I Decided This - Matt/Foggy. Matt makes so many idiotic decisions that they need an office chart to keep track. This is funny and cute, I like how the board makes them properly communicate.

I Won't Send Roses - Matt/Foggy. Time is finally right for Matt to go a-courting. A lovely, well-paced fic about moving forward with a charmingly realistic sex scene.

jump, check parachute - Matt/Foggy. Oh the feels... Friends with benefits, slow realisations and second chances. Lovely, lovely read.

Pardon Me While I Burst Into Flames - Matt/Foggy, AU. In which Matt is a devil in quite the literal sense. And not just any random demon, oh no, he's the kind who feeds on sexual energy... You're probably guessing where this is going and let me reassure you that the ride is hellishly hot and hilarious to boot :D

Private Property - Matt/Foggy, sort of slave AU. Matt has some money but not enough to cover years of studying necessary to become a lawyer. So he signs up as a Companion. His new owner is not at all what he expects. Ugh this fic, so awesome, so very, very hot. Matt's fears and fantasies get increasingly tangled as the years pass and Foggy doesn't make any move to take what is his. Highly recced.

rearrange the alphabet (u & i) - Matt/Foggy. Matt's attempts at wooing are not as obvious as he'd like to think. Adorable and romantic.

Rosemary and Mint - Matt/Foggy, Matt/Foggy's hair. Matt has a thing for a nice head of hair. Foggy definitely has one of those. This could be a problem. Hilarious, awkwardly hot :D

Say You'll Still Be By My Side - Matt/Foggy. Forgiveness takes time. Matt's working hard at it though because it's worth it. Slow and at times painful moving forward fic, with rewarding sweetness at the end.

We Just Lost the Beat - Matt/Foggy, AU. In which Matt still does what he does, but Foggy works in radio... Lovely identity porn. I'm a big fan of 'communicating via songs' trope and this does that beautifully, although you have to come up with the actual songs yourself (author's choice to leave it like that is both inspired and frustrating!)

kat_lair: (GEN - summer cliffs)

A mixed bag today!

Battle Creek

bad blood (mad love) -  Milt/Russ. Milt’s old boyfriend shows up. Russ does not react well, but not for the reasons you’d expect. This starts with the ‘ex in town’ trope but it actually takes it somewhere much, much deeper. This is a best exploration of exactly why Milt’s secrecy and ‘model FBI agent’ act bothers Russ so very much that I’ve seen, gets is better than the show itself really. And says something kind of profound about relationships in general in the process. Excellent, highly recced.

Fast and the Furious Series

Life Sentence - Brian/Dom, bonding AU. Ahhhhhhhhh bonding fic! Facing twenty-five to life Dom grabs the only way out he can see and volunteers for bonding. And with his scores a certain compatible Federal Agent is about to come calling… Great premise, great plot, great banter and oh my yes GREAT sex… Ngh. Dirty and glorious. Go read now; everything you need to know about canon is this: Dom pulls high-speed heists, Brian is a disillusioned FBI agent, they both really, really like driving dangerously. That’s it, you’re set, NOW GO!

Hot Space – Duncan/Methos. Aww yeah BAMF!Methos \o/ Possibly one of the reasons I liked this fic so much was because Duncan spends most of it off-screen, after having gotten himself kidnapped. Methos to the (reluctant and bitchy) rescue, hampered/aided by a plucky OFC who totally ships it. I enjoyed Methos being clever and competent and the hero of the day despite resenting the last part oh so much.

Planning is for Imbeciles – Duncan/Methos. Methos here is a bit too pining for my taste objectively speaking but the humour and writing more than make up for it. Methos’ self-deprecating inner (and sometimes outer) monologue feels spot-on and hilarious to boot. The final get together seems a bit sudden but overall this is entirely enjoyable.

Seven Year Itch – Duncan/Methos. Kilt!porn. Well, I’m frankly surprised there isn’t more of this in the fandom given Duncan’s origins. The porn is indeed hot (and takes place in a backseat of a car, bonus points for that!) but it also has a strong undercurrent of emotion. I’m terribly disappointed that I haven’t found any fic with the kink hinted at the end…

Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood – Duncan/Methos. Story of contrasts; Methos’ life then and now. I liked this because it makes its point without feeling the need to spell it out, trusting the reader to draw the parallels. This has a quiet feel to it and doesn’t shy away from the grimness of the past.

A Brief History of Home Invasions: It's Not the Uninvited Guest, It's What You Do With Them That Counts - Tim/Tony. The only ship I’m interested in for this fandom and [livejournal.com profile] catwalksalone writes it so well. I was re-reading one of her older fics and stumbled across this one, which was new to me but carries all the trademark banter and friendship and sweet slide to something more. Tony moves in which is a good thing as Tim is having some unwanted attention from someone intent on harming him… Plus, Tony cooks, so there is that.

Person of Interest

Discretion - Finch/Reese. Post s3 final John and Harold may have to get used to new lives and identities but that doesn't mean they have to do so alone. Or: John's going to find a way to stay close no matter what. Awesomely domestic, and shows how the new lives somehow free both of them from some fears and restraints of the past.

Alone On the Water – Gen(ish) John/Sherlock, death fic. I don’t read death fic. I don’t. But then I read the first few lines and then, somehow, I had read it. And I don’t regret it even though (because?) I cried and cried and cried throughout the whole thing and if I think about it too much I’ll start crying again. Jesus this hurts but it’s a hurt that is realistic and raw and claws your chest open. Beautifully written. Absolutely devastating.

Curtains – Bond/Q. Oh my heart, this is all kinds of perfect. Bond and Q move in together and eventually move from colleagues to friends to lovers. Everything about this feels warm and easy which is remarkable because the fic doesn’t shy away from the kind of work these men do, or the price it extracts. I was grinning whole way through the fic, giggling in delight. I so wish the author hadn’t opted to anonymise this because I want to find everything else they’ve ever written.

kat_lair: (GEN - summer cliffs)

It's my birthday and I come bearing the long-promised week of fic recs. It’s been a hell of a long time since I’ve done that (three years in fact, fuck) although I did try to make up for it over Christmas (if you missed it, those rec posts are here, here and here). It’s time. Particularly, since I’ve been reading loads lately. So for those of you new to the journal, here’s how it works. I rec ten fics per day for a week. The fics are simply ‘stories I enjoyed’ for a variety of reasons and in multiple fandoms. For previous rounds and some ad hoc fic reccing, please clic the ‘fanfic rec’ tag. Enjoy.

Let’s start with… Highlander. Yes, yes, you read that right. Idek if anyone on my flist is/used to be into this fandom? But I spent my formative teenage years watching this melodrama of long hair and clashing swords on TV and it is one of the first slash fandoms I read back in the day. You can check the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van fandom overview here if you want to brush up on canon before the fic! For some ineffable reason I’ve really been in mood for some Duncan/Methos fic lately. Hence recs! For a few of these Methos’ characterisation is not quite what I would like to see but that’s not a reflection on the author but instead on my insanely specific need for BAMF!Methos. I just… I can’t buy a 5,000-years-and-counting-old Immortal as anything but extremely competent when it comes to, well, basically everything, and any fic that includes him losing a fight or swooning like a schoolgirl makes me roll my eyes a lot. But there are degrees of that of course… Anyway, enough pre-ramble, on with the recs!

Change of Season – Duncan/Methos. A lovely get-together story with ust and that well used fandom cliché of Quickening-induced horniness. Also feelings. Enjoyed this just as much on the second read-through.

Fiction – Duncan/Methos. Starts funny as Methos finds a certain book but ends up somewhere altogether more honest. Lovely read that left me smiling.

New Tricks – Duncan/Methos. Methos accidentally adopts a dog. Because old misunderstood mutts need to stick together, right? This is such a heart-warming and heart-breaking read in equal measure. There’s an interesting ‘evil hunter of the week’ case too and lots of delicious domesticity. Also, Dog is awesome!

Save The Last Dance For Me – Duncan/Methos. Pretending to be boyfriends! \o/ This is a great rom-com where Duncan finally buys a clue. Unfortunately, Methos is not so convinced about the authenticity or longevity of said clue. Romance, angst, more romance! A bit more crying and schmoop than I strictly like but alas, I did thoroughly enjoy reading every single line of this so if you’re in mood for romance, give it a whirl.

Schiocchi – Duncan/Methos. Omniscient pov done really, really well. I loved the writing style, the way the author weaved sly humour and visceral, painful truth into something that looks deceptively simple yet peeled back layers and layers. Highly recced.

The Art of Teaching Nobody's Grasshopper – Duncan/Methos. I love it when Methos is capable. Here he ends up being capable around lots of bb!Immortals. Awww. Some really interesting OCs, would have happily read more about them.

Tilt – Duncan/Methos. Methos lends Duncan some new perspective in more ways than one. In the course of the evening they finally talk about some important things. An excellent character and relationship study and a lovely read.

The Velocity of Longing – Duncan/Methos. Reunion and then some, easy and sweet and with a warm sense of inevitability.

Winter’s End – Duncan/Methos. Flashbacks have a bad rep in this fandom (and for a reason, they were often hilariously awful in canon) but here they work really well, charting the relationship between Duncan and Connor.

Writing From Life – Duncan/Methos. Methos writes about his life to remind himself that he’s actually still living, that he’s real. Oh wow, this was excellently done, teetering on that edge of madness, tipping over and then back again. Lovely, lovely and achy.

kat_lair: (GEN - lights)

Here are the last 20 recs, hope you've found something to read in between holiday busyness. I still have tons of recs to do, particularly for Daredevil and Person of Interest, so I will see about doing the more usual Week of Fic Recs with 10 recs per day in early 2016...

Three Days of Christmas Kat's Fic Recs - Day Three

Five Times Pepper Took Care of the Avengers and One Time They Took Care of Her - Tony/Pepper, Clint/Natasha, Thor/Jane but really this is gen friendship focused fic. In which Pepper is awesome and frightening efficient. This a cute and domestic look at the Avengers and their (sometimes unexpected) friendships in the context flu-like symptoms... Made me laugh :D

Five Times Pepper Potts Took Care of Tony Stark (and One Time Tony Stark Took Care of Her) - Tony/Pepper. My favourite of the canon pairings because I like how obviously Pepper is in charge even if it may not appear like that to the casual observer. This maps the less than smooth early relationship, and there's plenty of h/c.

Four Times Pepper Potts Saved The World - Tony/Pepper. Pepper is a BAMF who gets things done. I love Pepper's characterisation in this; strong and determined despite/because of her doubts and fears.

Daredevil (TV)

Betting Blind - Matt/Foggy. Matt and Claire make a bet. Rather fluffy with lots of pining but sweet all the same.

I'm Gonna Give All My Secrets Away - Matt/Foggy. In which Matt's other secret is that he's still a virgin. Because he hasn't trusted anyone enough to... Well. Anyone besides Foggy that is. Unashamedly schmoopy.

(my heart) never could lie to you - Matt/Foggy. The 'five times Foggy describes things to Matt even though he doesn't' concept is a loose framework for a lovely bff fic where unrequited feels are requited after all, and there's food, dancing, h/c, cohabitation, banter and romance (aww the romance especially, wait till you get to the end!)

Right There Next To Me - Matt/Foggy. Adorable college era fic where Matt tries to exercise self-denial about his feels (spoiler: it doesn't work that well).

The Boxer-Puncher - Matt/Foggy. Foggy takes up boxing for reasons that are only partly related to self-defence. Matt likes it. A lot. I love Foggy being a BAMF and this has it in abundance. And ngh, the power dynamics in this are crafted with great subtlety and understanding, and while the concept of physical strength plays a large part, the psychological aspects are not even a little neglected. Excellent read, highly recced.

You Put the Devil in Me - Matt/Foggy. Matt touches Foggy a lot. Foggy does not take the hint. Adorable.

No Matter How Far Away You Roam - Arthur/Merlin, modern AU. Pure Christmas fluff where Merlin is Arthur's long-suffering assistant and has to go home for Christmas him to pretend to be his boyfriend. Their respective families find the whole thing both adorable and hilarious. Great, Christmas read to leave you smiling.

Person of Interest

Concierge Service - Finch/Reese, Finch/Reese/Zoe Morgan. Zoe is awesome. John just needs a little... direction. Harold has everything well in hand. Oh my god this is amazing and funny and so very, very hot too.

Domestication - Finch/Reese. There's joy to be had in everyday things. This is such a lovely fic, with an easy feel to it. Made me smile and smile and smile.

Fealty - Finch/Reese. Kara takes Reese and in the process digs out some truths that he would've much preferred to stay hidden. Ugh, the sheer emotional impact of this gets me right in my sappy d/s feels. I love that this is from Harold's pov too because his struggle with the Catch-22 situation he's been handed is entirely believable. Highly recced.

Ghost - Finch/Reese. Finch is taken by an enemy that the show didn't do enough with. Reese reacts more or less as you'd expect him to. Engaging, long (42k) read where everyone is a BAMF and the supporting characters are made excellent use of.

Love And Marriage - Finch/Reese. There's an entirely rational reason for why getting married makes sense. But oh what a surprise there is waiting for them at the wedding, and what a realisation that leads to... Hilarious, aching and gorgeous in equal measure.

Taken - Finch/Reese, aob AU. Short and sweet alpha/omega fic which left a sappy grin to my face.

Technical Support - Finch/Reese, canon AU. In which Harold works in IT and John in security, no one is quite what they seem and Kat's 'hidden competency' kink gets hammered until it rolls over and purrs. Utterly, utterly delightful and satisfying and funny. Which is unsurprising given the author.

The Right Move - Finch/Reese. Sheer, glorious porn. John asks for a kiss and gets bent over a desk. Computer equipmeng gets put to some excellent use. Hot and funny and yeah, ngh, hot.

Pineapple and Caramel - Gus/Shawn. Adorable little fic about getting together and building a family.

Star Trek (AOS)

Where You Lead, I Will Follow - Kirk/McCoy. Ahh dancing! Also Kirk's and Spock's lessons are a thing of beauty.

kat_lair: (GEN - lights)

Three Days of Christmas Kat's Fic Recs - Day Two

Avengers (movies)

All Things Counter - Bucky/Steve, daemon AU. I really liked the splintered, dissociated Bucky pov in this, the exploration of what happens if your soul is outside of you and hurt as his is. Angsty but with a hopeful ending, everyone's daemons are well thought out too.

Battle Creek

Dress the Part - Russ/Milt. Russ in a rentboy outfit. Enough said.

Worthless/Priceless - Blaine/Kurt, slave AU. This is one of those fics that is almost too wallowy, cliched and sappy at times but I have a terrible weakness for the 'abused slave rescued' trope and I admit to reading all 94k of this and enjoying it thoroughly. Like candy. Slave fic candy. Om nom nom.

read the map like poetry - Roddy/Barry(/OMC), background Nick/Monroe. This is a really great roadtrip fic of Roddy and Barry partying their way across the country, driving home from college. The OMC is fantastic, and this young adult look at the Wesen world seems realistic, while the whole thing is still infused with a sort of dream-like quality that pulls you along. Highly recced.

The Life and Times of Nick Burckhardt, Prefect - Nick/Monroe, Hogwarts AU. Who doesn't love a good Hogwarts AU? Nick and Monroe are prefects patrolling together and there's teenage angst, plus some great melding of both canons.

The Hobbit

Devils of Truth - Fili/Kili, not related and slave AU. Fili is given as gift to the crown prince of Erebor. Turns out slaves are treated quite differently in the Kingdom Under the Mountain than Fili is used to. More of the slave fic candy! 53k of glorious feels and angst and cliche. Also, the description of Fili in his party finery was most excellent!

Person of Interest

Dangerous If Unbound - Finch/Reese, bdsm AU. By now you know how I feel about bdsm AUs and about this pairing. So when I found out that Astolat had written 23k glorious words of it I almost stroked out from sheer excitement. I've read this fic maybe about 4 or 5 times now and it's earned a permanent place in my go to list of fics for when I just want something comforting that I know is brilliant. This not only hits my love of power dynamics, but it also caters directly for my extreme fondness of the 'the unassuming seeming person is secretly a BAMF' trope. Boy does it. Highly, so very highly recced.

Furnace - Finch/Reese. Takes place after season 3, Finch and Reese are travelling Europe; regrouping, recruiting, and readjusting their relationship. The description of the different cities is lovely, and there's an unhurried feel to this despite the underlying urgency.

Inscribed - Finch/Reese. Harold has a tattoo. John approves. Kat approves too. A lot.

Intimacy - Finch/Reese. A number means that two of them have to take their 'pretend couple' act all the way. Turns out no one really minds. Everything is so casual until it isn't but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Funny and hot and sweet and wonderful.

remember, there are eagles - Finch/Reese, daemon AU. The summary for this is 'Five things Harold’s daemon isn’t, and one she is' and the fic itself is perfect and clever, somehow both fragile and strong like Harold and John. As an aside, one of the things Harold's daemon is NOT... I really wish she was, because that is a perfect concept and someone should write it asap. You'll know what I mean when you get to that point and go '...oh' like I did :D

Touchstone - Finch/Reese. Something is up with Harold. Luckily for everyone John gets to the bottom of it (with a little help) and history doesn't repeat itself. Harold's behaviour in entirely believable considering his past, and the embedding of literary quotes works wel and adds depth to the story.

Walking in the Dark - Finch/Reese. John and Harold are used to walking in the dark, but they no longer have to do it alone. A ball game, a dinner, and a realisation. This is utterly lovely, with great characterisation, and deals with Harold's disability and its very practical implications when it comes to sex with care and realism.

Star Trek (AOS)

Caught in the Crossfire - Kirk/McCoy. Extreme h/c with emphasis on the hurt, including medical procedures done in the rough, without anaesthesia. I'm not particularly squeamish but parts of this made me cringe. Also, there's a lot of introspection and mastication of feelings. You may wonder why I'm reccing this after all that but the case itself is pretty intriguing and I really liked the original character in this, and well, a little wallow in feels is like cotton candy. Still delicious! If you like h/c, you should enjoy this.

Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance - Kirk/McCoy. This is an adorable Academy era Christmas fic where Kirk's Advent Calendar consists of different ways of wooing Bones. The graphics add to the story and the ending as adorable.

Submit, Fight, Fail, Fall (or why you can't fight the blood that's in you) - Kirk/McCoy, aob AU. This is a delicious wallow of feels and cliches. Jim is an abused omega who has sworn off alphas. Bones shows him that not all alphas are bastards. Power dynamics, possessiveness, friends with benefits thing morphing into something real, lots of hot sex. Oh, and it's 59k, so fix yourself a cuppa and enjoy.

X-Men: First Class

Celestial Navigation - Charles/Erik. Wonderfully descriptive fic that adds depth to the recruitment tour, immersing Erik and Charles and the reader in 1960s New York. Brilliant glimpse of Orore as a child too,

Homecoming - Charles/Erik. They may not be talking but when Charles is in trouble, Erik runs to the rescue without hesitation. And nothing makes compromise look as tempting as mortal peril. Lovely fic.

I Wanna Give, I'm Completely Positive - Charles/Erik, modern & bdsm AU. Short but adorable fic about Erik who has been saving himself for his dom.

write this number down (you can call it anytime) - Charles/Erik. Erik acquires twins and finds parenthood somewhat challenging. Luckily there's Uncle Charles... This is a great story both as a 'kid fic' and how it treats the very adult, very fragile relationship between Charles and Erik.

kat_lair: (GEN - lights)

Hello my wonderful flist. I have managed to finish one lecture so I'm giving myself a few days off for Christmas. There has been a lot of cooking and baking and hanging out with mum, and it has all been very therapeutic.

Unfortunately, I still can't squeeze out any creativity for fics or art, or even pretty photos (I have some cat ones, yay?) for Christmas. So instead of something original, I present and gift to you (see what I did there?)...

Three Days of Christmas Kat's Fic Recs

3 days, 20 fic recs per day, variety of fandoms = something to treat yourself with after the holiday activities and socialising gets too much.

Happy Christmas. Stay awesome.

Three Days of Christmas Kat's Fic Recs - Day One

Battle Creek

at last, we see each other plain - Russ/Milt. I'm very fond of this show which is so very obvious in its slasher baiting. The fic is a classic take on the 'something from the past comes back to haunt them' trope, with added hurt/comfort and slowly dawning realisation.

Caught with Your Glasses On - Russ/Milt. Glasses porn. Well, glasses making out. Still, pretty cute.

Daredevil (TV)

Down to the Bone - Matt/Foggy, daemon AU. All the goodness of 'from bffs to lovers' and intense feelings but with addead daemons, plust daemon touching at the end of course. Adorable.

Cohabitation and Eventual Domestication - Nick/Monroe. From housemates to something more with a lot of sweetness and ust. This is such an easy, sweet read, really enjoyable.

It's Not a Revolution - Nick/Monroe. When Nick moves in some things change and some don't. I like '5+1' fics and this is lovely and domestic.

The Musketeers (BBC)

In Our Wonder And Astonishment - Richeliu/de Treville, bdsm AU. Look, okay, so I tried watching the show and just couldn't get into it. My memories of French history are vague. I never read Alexander Dumas all the way through. I have no idea about even what the actors playing these parts look like. None of that matters, because this a long (97k), glorious bdsm AU and those are like delicious edible gold dust to me. The world building is excellent, and the sheer intrigue of politicking in Louis XIII's court with added bdsm dynamics would've kept me hooked quite apart for the lovely 'pretend relationship turning to a real one' aspect of the story. Highly recced.

Person of Interest

less bigger than the least begin - Finch/Reese. Finch's former employee is in trouble. Reese is having a lot of conflicted feelings about helping him. Great OMC, angst and misunderstandings and oh, oh Reese and his presumedly unrequited feelings and their conversation at the end *clutches heart* Also delicious, subtle power dynamics because John loves Harold showing and telling him what to do, and oh, oh I was back to clutching my heart for the sex scene. Gorgeous fic.

Stripped (down to the bone) - Finch/Reese, aob AU. John thought he was too old to get into heat again. Turns out he was was wrong about that. This is 11k of John descending into a beautifully needy, desperate state and how Harold is there for him, even if he doesn't think it's such a good idea.

The Most Important Meal of the Day - Finch/Reese. Finch and Reese start sharing baked goods for breakfast. The whole thing sounds unbearably sweet and it is that, but there's also slashes of bitterness and pain, but it is Reese's want, deep and desperate, that is the most delicious thing about this.

The Water - Finch/Reese. To help his injuries and pain, Harold takes up swimming again. This time John is there to help. If only Harold would let him... Sensual, deeply caring, and very well captures both erotic and healing potential of water.

Stargate Atlantis

A Secret Island in Your Mind - McKay/Zelenka. For such smart guys, it sure takes Rodney and Radek a while to get on the same wavelenght. Author describes this as 'romantic dramedy' which is pretty accurate :D Lots of pining and jealousy even afte they get together. One of my favourite pairings for this fandom and it was so great to read a proper long (25k) fic for them. Remember to check out the lovely fanart too!

Connection - McKay/Zelenka. This will resonate with every non-native English speaker, or really anyone who has had to adjust to a new language/culture. Loved it.

Star Trek (AOS)

En Promenade - Kirk/McCoy. Holy crap, why hadn't I read this before? This is an excellent, long Academy era fic of Jim and Bones moving from friends to lovers. Don't be thrown by the detailed references to things that happened before, there isn't currently a prequel (I checked, though I could also be wrong) and it confused me a bit but just seems like something the author was putting in place for a potential prequel... Anyway, back to the story. Fuck, the ust in this is fantastic. There is a lot of dancing and surprise competency which always works for me. The scene at the club with the suits... Oh Christ, I can't remember the last time a fic made my toes literally curl because the sexual tension was just scorching. This kept me interested all the way to the end, even when the fic moves to established relationship. There's also a sequel which I haven't read yet but probably will. Really, very highly recced.

Ooooo, Doctor Bones - Kirk/McCoy. Bones is a goddamn superstar in his own field. Hits my competency kink just right.

Water's Edge - Kirk/McCoy, merpeople AU. There's something Bones has been keeping from Jim.. Something that's about to come and bite them both on the ass. The alien culture and planet are nicely alien, the angst is delicious, and who doesn't like the idea of mer!McCoy?

Star Trek (multi)

Things - Kira/Odo, mostly gen with ensemble cast, daemon AU. This fic requires you to have at least medium level familiarity of TNG, Voyager and particularly DS9 where it takes place. If you have that, and you enjoy strong characterisation and daemon AUs then run, don't walk, and read this now. This centres around Odo, his lack of Daemon, and how fluid is the concept of a soul. Excellent fic that trusts the reader.

The X-Files

the furthest constellations - Mulder/Scully, daemon AU. This is essentially a retelling of key moments of the first two seasons of the show, but with daemons, and with Mulder and Scully actually acting on their feelings in the end rather than internalising them for several more years of angst. What with the new six episode season around the corner (I saw a poster in town the other day and made a noise that made even my past 15-year-old self cringe) I've been returning to the fandom a bit for the fics, so this was really lovely way to visit some of those moments that made me squeal and melt and gasp when I was a teenager :D

X-Men: First Class

An Act Too Often Neglected- Charles/Erik, Logan. Hilarious outsider pov fic. Logan sure as hell didn't plan on being the gift Erik drops at Charles' feet like a dog presenting a rabbit to his master, but here he is, witnessing their awkward attempts of conciliation whether he wants to or not (hint: he really doesn't).

No Matter What - Armando Munoz/Alex Summers, bdsm AU. This is an offshoot of a longer verse but works really well on its own. The world building is great, and I would love to read more about all the original character/pairings we meet briefly at the start when the soulmate search journey ends in a juvenile detention centre...

Time to Grow - Charles/Erik, alternate fix it ending. Charles and Erik play chess and have a lot of not dates. Somewhere along the line they also actually talk about things. Characterisation is excellent and it doesn't shy away from the difficult topics like Erik's 'kill first, consider ethics later' habit. Relationship development is lovely, but the moral philosophy discussions are almost better.

kat_lair: (FUTURAMA - windmills)

I have marked 15 essays today. I want to cry. The two are causally correlated.

In other news, I have finally bought a new laptop. And by that I mean, the same laptop I have now except the newer version. It should be here soon. Yes, it was emotionally painful.

However, I am now lusting after a tablet. It must be 10inch because I need to use it for work stuff but otherwise I'm open for recommendations. Oh, and I'd ideally not use more than ~£300 on it.

I continue to be in love with Lewis fandom! Back in February I left a prompt about Hathaway going on a series of bad dates and then, two months later, two separate but equally awesome fics about that appeared as a complete surprise. Both are excellent stories with great characterisation and oodles of romance and jealousy and pining and oh my heart! Run, don't walk, to read: Not Quite According To Plan by [livejournal.com profile] fortesomniare and The Unfortunate State of My Dates by [livejournal.com profile] wendymr and [livejournal.com profile] paperscribe. <3

Here are a couple of things gathered via flist that I wanted to share:

  • This Is My Body - a video with some important messages, most universal, although some with US-centric slant as that's where the vid originates from (triggery for sexual harassment/offending and health issues). Because for those of us on the Northern Hemisphere, how many magazine articles and comments have you already seen/received about getting your body 'swimsuit ready'? And really, that's just the tip of the iceberg as you all know.

And because I wanted to leave you with something light-hearted and silly after that...

Right, as you were. I'm going to go get some food now and watch 2h of American sit-coms.

kat_lair: (GRIMM - reformedish)

Again, these are all Nick/Monroe. BECAUSE MONROE, okay?

5 Times Neither of Them Said 'I Love You' and 1 Time One of Them Did by brbsoulnomming - Entirely awesome! And not nearly as schmoopy as the title suggests. Also includes my favourite fandom trope about Monroe marking Nick's place as his territory.

All the Time in the World by Kittycrackers - Sharing body heat trope with added almost bestiality. Surprisingly gentle and romantic when all is said and done.

Ask Me No Questions by laceymcbain - I love Hank and this provides good characterisation of him, following the clues to the most logical conclusion as he questions Nick about his relationship with Monroe. Funny and subtle, technically gen with heavy pre-slash connotations.

Gingerbread by entanglednow - Sex magic. Delicious and funny.

How Does Your Garden by entanglednow - See above except this time with sex pollen.

Incautious by entanglednow - Yes, I know. In retrospect I should've just gone through Sol's fics first because everything she churns out is quality stuff. Every time I get into new fandom and then realise she writes for it too (god I love multifandom authors) I get the happies. This has gorgeous tension and smart, on the spot, characterisation.

Of All by laetificare - Interesting villain/case, doesn't shy away from the bloody and horrible.

Phoenix Burning by ?? (orphaned work) - Canon AU where Nick is still a Grimm and Monroe is still a Blutbad except he also works as a fireman. And there's an arsonist bent on burning up Wesen running rampant in Portland... The premise has a nice romance novel feel to it, including Nick having many a swooning moment over Monroe doing his firefighter thing (and who can blame him). The case is also intriguing and well constructed.

Routine Makes The Man by ArkadianMouse - Canon AU with a premise that I would have happily watched a show about too. Nice h/c too.

shut the laundry room door by Menacherie - Awwwww my heartttt, this is all warm and perfect. Nick smells like Monroe. Nobody minds.

Surrender by Guanin - There is a lot I like about this fic, particularly the way Monroe's past means not everything is all roses and happy times in a new relationship.

The (Grimm and Blutbad) Book Club (for the Eager and the Doomed) by laceymcbain - Well Nick needs some reason for seeing Monroe on the regular. Pretending he's attending a book club seems like a good one. Until Monroe runs with the idea for reals. Delicious hints of pre-slash, left me grinning. Hank and Wu provide brilliant supporting cast here.

welcome, ghosts by somethingradiates - Meet Monroe's family. They're about as fucked up as you'd expect and the fic doesn't shy away from the sheer brutality of Blutbaden pack relations. Apart for the sex, this reads like something that could easily happen in canon.

Grimm Recs!

Apr. 9th, 2014 05:54 pm
kat_lair: (GRIMM - cometh the wolf)

Because I just bitched and whined about lack of quality stuff, I thought it would be only fair to showcase the numerous exceptions. Turned out there were quite a few fics worth a read though so there will be a second rec post for those in a few days. :D

All recs are Nick/Monroe. Because that's the way I rock atm.

Food of Love by mrsvc - Food is love. End of story. People feeding people out of love is like one of favourite fic and RL things. Lovely.

Freak Out by brbsoulnomming - Monroe's wolf side does not freak Nick out. Quite the contrary. Oddly sweet in its way, liked it a lot.

Kiss With a Fist by ?? (orphaned work) - Fight sex. With rimming. Whilst Monroe is not fully human anymore. Enough said. Except for GUHHH

Monroe's Fairytale Halfway House by mrsvc - Ahhhh I love 'families of choice' tropes and Grimm is full of troubled teenagers that could use a Grimm and a Blutbad as big brothers. Lovely, heart-warming, feel good read.

Nimble Tongue by laetificare - Nick is cursed to lie. It all spirals out from that. Really interesting premise, and nothing about this fic (not the case resolution, nor the relationship changes) comes easy

Not Helping! by LadyNyxRavus - Nick waves the red flag. With predictable consequences. I do rather enjoy this trope and this is one of the better executions of it :D

The Grimm of Portland by ?? (orphaned work) - A good case fic with additional mind control feature. The way in which Monroe gets around the compulsion to obey a particular order is... well, you'll see. Ouch.

The Wolves in Waiting by jibrailis - Nick has all the keys to Monroe's house, and his life. The writing is fantastic and I love how the author trusts the reader to get it and doesn't spell things out. Understated and lovely. Highly recced.

You be Rose and I'll be Jack by ?? (orphaned work) - It's canon that Nick is good at drawing. Turns out he has quite a preference for one particular model. A'wwwwww.

(We're Looking For) Something Dumb to Do by mrsvc - 'Woke Up Wesen Married' trope is sadly entirely underused, more of this I say! This is funny and romantic with good characterisation and Rosalee being awesome too.

A Blutbad's Gotta Howl by TheSylverLining - A too short vidlet that vidder calls 'lulzy' and I call ajkldsjgksfjssakhsdjfk guh. Thissssssssss is what I'm talking about re Nick trying Monroe's control. I have watched it about five times already.

Clear Night in June by madtodream - Oh man, I couldn't decide whether to laugh or clutch my heart from the ~feelings~ It's Nick/Monroe set to an Eminem song and it shouldn't work but somehow it still does.

Secrets by DeWinter79 - N'awwwwww woobie!Monroe, giving all his secrets away. Ahhhhh (b)romance.

Slept for good ten hours. Feeling not quite here. Weather is nice and I need to go to the shop, but first I need to at least tidy the house (the actual cleaning may be job for another day) and have a shower. Bah.

Coffee and socks will hopefully help

Fandom is making happy and sad.

Happy because some old favourites like Talking Stick/Circle are showing up on AO3. And happy because stuff like this happens:

Sad because fandom seems to be moving to platforms I just don't seem to get on with it. Looking at you Tumblr. I'm too word and discussion oriented. But. My LJ flist is so very quiet. And the recent announcement of [livejournal.com profile] crack_van closing down just feels like the final death knell... I've been toying with an idea of doing a multi-fandom friending meme but honestly now I'm not sure it would be worth it...

Anyway. Shakes self off to action. Like that coffee. And probably porridge as that's all the breakfast type food I have in the house at the moment.

kat_lair: (GEN - expert advice)

I have had three cups of coffee. I still feel sleepy. In fact, I've been tired a lot lately but I'm trying to combat this with Berocca and making sure I get out of the house at least once a day. Sitting in the garden counts, okay? I did that this morning but it wasn't that warm and the sun kept hiding. Now I'm back on the sofa and sun is out again making me feel guilty for just wanting to hide inside with the curtains drawn.

My cats are being particularly clingy at the moment. This may have something to do with the (finally) cooling weather as last night they actually slept inside. They are currently both on the sofa with me, Perdie next to my head and Tricks holding onto my toes. Aww.

Have finally uploaded more icons. I'm paying for the extra space but haven't really been taking advantage of that. I will also be making some icons today, yes sir.

I've been re-reading a lot of old SPN fics lately, rediscovering old favourites (like Birds on a Wire and The Epic Love Story of Sam and Dean and Mixing Light to Light and also of fuck Bitch and ahahaha Leader of the Pack and also Green and Gamboge and oh man I could go onnnn). Good times.

This has led me thinking about fic tropes again. Here are three tropes that I don't like despite fully acknowledging some people's ability to write them spectacularly:

  1. Time-travel. Idk, I just don't like the idea of people missing each other in such a fundamental way as being in different sections of the time stream. I don't like characters receiving dire warnings or sage advice from their future self. I also don't like future self/present self sex. Yawn.

  2. Apocalypse fic. I don't like the idea of world ending. Apocalypse was one of those things I was absolutely terrified as a child (growing up in 80s with constant talk of nuclear war and Tšernobyl happening relatively close with warnings of not to eat berries etc from the forests that summer and... yeah) so it's not a setting I want to read about. Though, like with many other darker fictional scenarios, I think I could actually write it quite happily. Lol it's like fictional switching that mirrors the other switching: I'll do things to others with glee that I will not have done to me *g* Double standards ftw!

  3. Crossovers where a character gets it on with the actor playing them. Like Dean/Jensen or even stuff like Gerard/Poison. Similar thing to the time-travel cliché of having sex with yourself. Oh, see also: clones and mirror universes. I just... I'd rather read a good traditional masturbation pwp to be honest. Adding a second (third?) person to the mix doesn't really help. Say Merlin's spell goes wrong and he ends up with a double and then Arthur goes 'By the Grail, we must have a threesome!'... Yeah, not doing it for me. It lacks the kind of tension or spark you have between to different people. Honestly, if I met my future self or my mirror universe double, I wouldn't be interested in having sex with myself. For real, we'd probably just drink tea and try to get twice as much work/writing done and divide up responsibilities because we are inherently lazy.

From dislikes to likes. Remember that Working Hard for the Money meme I pimped a few days ago. Well, I left quite a few prompts there and one of them even got filled \o/ I thought I'd put them here too in case some of you are desperately wondering what to write me for Christmas... *g* Seriously though, eternal gratitude to anyone who might get inspired:

Bandom, Patrick/Pete
Early days, the band need money to tour. Patrick makes it by selling his... nope, not his body. His voice. Because turns out that it's not just good for singing, but it's also extremely good for talking dirty on the phone sex line. Pete finds out. Inevitable ensues. - Filled here: That Pretty Mouth Say Such Dirty Words by the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] synnerxx

Psych, Gus/Shawn
Someone is attacking the ladies and gentlemen of the night in Santa Barbara. Only way for Shawn to get a good 'psychic reading' of the attacker is to go undercover as a companion for hire. Cue Shawn hanging on street corners in tank top and torn jeans. He is... surprisingly good at the role. Better than his excellent acting skills alone could account for. Gus starts thinking about all those years Shawn spent away and just how he made ends meets... Angst, confrontation, jealousy, some creep touching Shawn in bad places, bonus for Gus decking the guy flat out, happy endings :D

Bandom, Ryan/Spencer
When Ryan's dad finally kicks him out, Ryan is too proud to go asking for help from his best friend. In retrospect, he should've maybe swallowed his pride.

Merlin, Gwen/Morgana
Modern AU, Morgana's uni mates drag her onto a pub crawl that ends in a strip bar. Morgana is shocked to see her project partner Gwen on stage. Shocked and... well, kind of... unable to take her eyes off her.

Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/McCoy
Modern AU, BDSM, Kirk is good at going to his knees and begging and making his clients believe he means it. In truth he despises every guy who thinks himself a "Master Leather God" or some such nonsense, thinks himself to be a Dom and a real man for smacking him around. And yet... they're paying for it because they clearly can't get anyone to do it voluntarily. If he had a choice, Kirk wouldn't sub for any of these guys. Truth be told, he's not sure he'd sub for anyone... although sometimes he thinks maybe, with a right guy, it could be... sort of okay. Maybe with a guy like Dr McCoy, the sarcastic, grumpy ER doctor who's looked after Kirk on more than one occasion after the extras he charged his clients for were a little too much after all. My undying gratitude for anyone who would write this, seriously.

Sherlock, John/Sherlock
AUish, world where contracting yourself out as a sex slave for a pre-determined period of time is an accepted if not that respected way of making money. After John saves the lives of men in his regimen, they pass the hat around and buy him one hell of a thank you present: Sherlock Holmes at his exclusive service for six months. John appreciates the gesture, he really does. Sherlock is scary smart, funny (often unintentionally though) and seriously, seriously hot. And he can apparently suck cock really, really well. Better than John's ever had. Or so he tells him. Because, well, John kind of has... moral objections for actually having sex with anyone who's been paid to do it. It's going to be long six months. And at the end of it... well, who knows.

Right, enough rambling for today. I'm going to go wash dishes and put rubbish/recycling out now because these are the things that need doing. Then after that I'm going to sit down and do some icons, dammit.

kat_lair: (LEWIS - partners)

Final day of the recs for this round. Hope you've enjoyed them!

American Idol

(This Is) Not a Statement - Adam/Kris.
This fic is to blame for how late this final rec post is. I swear I only meant to skim it quickly for rec-writing purposes but instead I got completely sucked into reading again from start to finish for what I think is at least the fourth time. This is a long, slow falling in love story where the relationship is so organic that like the characters you're not sure exactly where that shift from friends playing to something more actually happens. Bonus points for the beautiful, subtle d/s dynamic that is simply there as a normal part of the everyday relationship. Highly recced.

I've Got Your Number One Bullet Right Here, Baby - Patrick/Pete
. Ah, oldie but goodie. The pre-show ritual of watching porn kind of messes with Patrick's head... Delicious and hot first-time bunk sex ensues. Patrick/Pete is my ultimate bandom otp and this fic gives me such happy fluffies.

You make me feel so --  - Ryan/Spencer. Post-break up fix-it fic, a sub-genre I have particular fondness for. Spencer is getting anonymous gifts. Except there's only one person who would know what to send... Layered and hot.

each to each - Hathaway/Lewis.
On the surface this is an 'undercover as a couple for a case' fic. Scratch beyond that and there is an incredible blend of realism and lyricism that just draws you into the moment and holds you there. There is such shocking, aching sense of intimacy to this story that it took my breath away.

Moments In Time - Hathaway/Lewis. A lovely selection of snippets with accompanying music, that perfectly capture some key moments in Robbie's life. Great atmosphere and sense of time, the song selection is perfect.

No Less Human - Hathaway/Lewis. James is taken with a handsome subject and Lewis finds himself rather annoyed at that... Jealousy and a most satisfying resolution.

Semi-Skimmed - Hathaway^Lewis. This is a lovely fic of James pushing through all of Robbie's walls, with a lot of great little details (the moment of realisation in Tesco in particular). Gorgeous read that felt very true to the characters.

The Hermit Crab - Hathaway/Lewis. Newly established relationship fic where Robbie finds it a little difficult to adjust to being in a relationship with another man, and having other people know it. This is a lovely fic that explores the generation gap between the two characters that would surely manifest in ways like these.

A Cure For Boredom - John/Sherlock, John/many many others.
Once you've been in fandom for a while, you'll find yourself skipping the sex scenes for the simple reason that so many of them become... boring, repetitive, not actually adding anything to the story. So to find a fic that is essentially one sex scene after another, and almost 77k long, and yet doesn't once lose my interest once, is pretty amazing. Sherlock and John become regulars at a sex club where John has a lot of sex (with some awesome and fully fleshed - pun not intended - original characters, male and female) while Sherlock mostly... watches. Very, very hot, and a very, very engrossing read.

Star Trek (Reboot)

Schoolboys - Chekov/Sulu, Chekov/Kirk, Chekov/McCoy, Sulu/Kirk, Kirk/McCoy.
Ugh, schoolboy and teacher role play porn, written for [livejournal.com profile] st_xi_kink_meme (so scroll down a bit to the get to the relevant comments). Oh Christ almighty, this is one of the filthiest, hottest pieces of porn I've read in a long time. I highly recommend that not only do you read this, but that you reserve a cold drink and/or some private time for when you do...

kat_lair: (WHO - rory)

A little sincerity is a dangerous thing - Gerard/Mikey.
Angsty schmoopy waycest written for me! This is a lovely fic, mapping the slow shift in the brothers' relationship from realisation to acceptance.

And the Painted Ponies - Frank/Mikey, AU. A thoroughly enjoyable AU where Mikey is a fashion model and Frank is the unlikely (but deadly!) bodyguard assigned to protect him. The concept works well and doesn't even require much of a stretch of imagination to see how things could have gone this way. Mikey in this is particularly great, but all characters are used well. The romance made me tingle happily and there's enough drama and action to keep things interesting.

Everyone Comes To Pan’s - Frank/Gerard, Mikey/Ray, AU. A delightful AU that plays well with the faerie mythology and weaves some interesting magic as Frank discovers that he's not quite what he thought he was... There is also a sequel Pan Goes A Courting (Patrick/Pete) that is much more tongue-in-cheek and meta-laden, but very cute.

Merry We Are - Alex/Ryland, AU. A troubadour AU, and a long one, with one of my favourite but sadly very rare pairings! Oh the rejoicing! This is a lovely tale of magic and music, just wonderful.

wherever i'm with you - Ryan Luciani/Nick Scimeca, other background pairings. If the pairing makes you go 'who??' don't worry about it. This is perfectly accessible to read as an original fic as it is essentially a story about a group of friends, two of whom take some time to sort their shit out. Painful and realistic look at unrequited love (which then turns out to be all requited because c'mon, you know I love happy endings). Don't think the writing style - loose, meandering, almost stream-of-consciousness - is for everyone, but it is one I really enjoy even though I lost the plot (such as it is) at times. Very enjoyable read.

Doctor Who

Seventeen Things That Happen to Rory Williams, After - Eleventh Doctor/Rory.
Author's summary works well: "In which Amy dies and Rory, eventually, keeps going." This is heart-breaking and heart-warming in equal measure, a great story that encapsulates the quirky humour of the show as well as its darkness and ever-present hope.

Robin Hood (BBC)

but surely, sheriff, don’t you see; that you can’t take the sky from me? - Gen(ish), Firefly fusion!
Oh gosh, such nostalgia for the glory days of Robin Hood fandom *thinks wistfully of tree!porn* Anyway! This was a wonderful, seamless fusion of the two worlds. Readers familiar with both canons will get the most out of this as there are a lot of subtle little nods that filled me with delight.

At Least There's Football - Lestrade/Mycroft, background John/Sherlock
. If you are eyeing the main pairing with askance... then stop, and give this fic a chance, I guarantee you won't regret it. This is long, like 'prepare to lose a week' long, and utterly, utterly brilliant. Told from Greg's pov, the fic maps the relationship development slowly, taking time to fully flesh out both main characters, as well as create some wonderful original ones. Greg's family, particularly his two nieces, come to life so vividly I am left wanting to read books and books about them too, not to mention Anthea. Engrossing, un-put-downable storytelling that sweeps you along. I cannot rec this enough.

Star Trek (Reboot)

One Time Spock Walked In On Bones and Kirk Having Sex, and Five Times He Didn’t - Kirk/McCoy, Spock/Uhura.
In turns hilarious and heart-breaking, this is essentially a lovely exploration of friendship.

Top Gun

Kings of the Air - Iceman/Maverick.
Oh c'mon, like you haven't thought about it, Top Gun being the gayest not-actually-a-gay-porno movie there is. This fic, however, manages something that the movie itself never did; it makes these characters real and gives them actual depth. It's a brilliant, hot, and unexpectedly meaningful story with some great commentary on the (now thankfully obsolete) American military rules.

kat_lair: (PSYCH - you know that's right)

Being Human UK

Teethe and its continuation Suffer Well - Hal/Tom. Hands up if you thought the werewolf/vampire dynamic mark 2 was as ripe for some slash potential as the mark 1. o/ This is a very, very hot, but more importantly interesting and subtle exploration of that, with both guys perfectly in character. Hal can't drink Tom's blood, which makes him a safe substitute to do... everything else with. Right? The sexual tension in these fics is something else and the otherness, the 'not human' aspect of the the characters comes through loud and clear.

Hawaii Five-0

Tell You What (you're gonna do) - Danny/Steve.
I loved the effortless, organic feel of this, and the banter and Danny's internal monologue were just spot on. The sex scene was well balanced between smut and emotional connection, without veering so much on either direction as to leave me bored.

Lord of the Rings

The Paths of the Living - Aragorn/Boromir, Aragorn/Faramir, Aragorn/Boromir/Faramir.
Boromis survives the Orc attacks and so Aragorn finds himself with two princes of Ithilien to love. The language is gorgeous and the dynamic between the three men believably developed.

Original Fic

The Heart May be Tiny but the World's Enormous - m/m.
Down on his luck goat-thief gets caught in the act by the goat's owner who turns out to be a widowed swordsmith with a young child to look after and a need for a live-in babysitter... This is a wonderful long read, set in a richly drawn world of Imperial China (or something closely reminiscent). Everything is viscerally realistic, from the everyday chores to the characters with their human imperfections to the sex. Highly recced.

The Closet and Dr Caligari - Gus/Shawn.
Oh god, long Gus/Shawn is so rare that I literally squealed from excitement when I stumbled across this 37k fic of awesomeness from an author whom you may recognise from the Life of Mars fandom. This fic reads like a really good episode of the show with a suitably ridiculous case to solve but with a lovely 'from best friends to lovers' development to go with it as both men struggle with their own fears and insecurities. Lovely read, perfectly captures why this pairing is the otp of the show for me.

Sherlock Holmes (2009 movie)

A Perfectly Ordinary Day - Holmes/Watson.
A fic about the day that changed everything, a lovely slow pace and attention to detail.

Observations on Sentinels and Guides in Victorian London - Holmes/Watson, AU. Where Holmes is the Prime Alpha Sentinel of London, without a Guide until one war-weary doctor steps out of the ship. The world-building in this is truly fascinating and the fic hits my possessiveness kink in the best way possible. Interesting secondary characters, details of the society and a case to the boot. Great, long and engrossing read.

Silver Light and Shadow - Holmes/Watson, AU. Summer camp AU, after a fumbling teenage teenaged night fiver years ago the boys are back at the camp, this time as counsellors. A charming story.

Sherlock Holmes (book canon)

What’s in a Name? - Holmes/Watson.
Holmes does some maneouvering to ensure that Watson returns to Baker Street and finds that the domesticity between takes on a new flavour. A lovely getting together fic with warm comfortable inevitability.

Star Trek (Reboot)

Not All Those Who Wander - Gen.
Spock Prime wanders the universe, righting wrongs and being a badass. A certain level of canon knowledge is needed for the whole awesome impact of it, but a true treat to leave any Trekkie grinning.

kat_lair: (SHERLOCK - sherlock)

26 Pieces - John/Sherlock. Excellent case fic with h/c. Both John and Sherlock (and Mycroft!) get to be total badasses. The voices are spot-on, the alternating pov wors really well and the sex packs an emotional punch. Highly recced.

A Silver Sixpence - John/Sherlock. Pretending to be married for a case! Always a winner that cliché and this fic provides a pretty good justification for the ruse as well. The relationship development is slow and organic, just the way I like it. There's plenty of humour and an interesting case.

Big Brother Is Watching You - John/Sherlock. Crack. So much crack. John and Sherlock hide from Moriarty in the Big Brother house. Sherlock takes it about as well as you'd imagined. The other contestants and the Big Brother, take it even worse. Hilarious.

Cannot Help But Fall - John/Sherlock. A thoroughly enjoyable fic that marries an intriguing case and relationship development very well. Bonus points for John being smart and competent and dangerous which pushes all my buttons just like Sherlock's.

everything you won't tell me (is mapped in your scars) - John/Sherlock, bdsm!AU. Everyone who knows me, knows I have a dreadful weakness for bdsm!AUs. This one doesn't disappoint. In fact it does quite the opposite. The world building is interesting and the dynamic and relationship between John and Sherlock doubly so.

Performance In a Leading Role - John/Sherlock, AU. An engaging AU where John and Sherlock are Hollywood actors, caught in an unexpected relationship. Some of the romance is a little too much for me, but it was the context and culture of film industry that really sold the fic for me. If you like meta with your story, you'll enjoy this.

Shadows on the Wall - John/Sherlock. Psychic!John. Relentless, seamless weaving of present and potential futures, all of which John struggles to navigate. Rich details and great use of sensory description.

The Art Of Seduction - John/Sherlock, AU. Instead of solving crimes, Sherlock turned all his attention to sex. This is inspired by Quees As Folk UK so if you enjoyed that, you'll love this. Great use of minor characters and the resolution is deeply satisfying. Long, thoroughly entertaining read.

Ulysses and other tales - John/Sherlock. Virgin!Sherlock, and brilliantly, believably, brittly done. The interaction between Mycroft and Sherlock is possibly the best I've read and manages to encapsulate their relationship in just a few paragraphs. Sherlock voice is perfect and the somewhat disjointed writing style works so well. And oh the sex scene... Gorgeous and shivery. Highly recced.

Undressing - John/Sherlock. This is a gorgeous, hot, and above all an interesting look at clothes and nakedness and the meaning of both. A unique story.

kat_lair: (SPN - beginning)

Clandestine Boys (Have Nothing to Hide) - Patrick/Pete, AU.
To save his business, Patrick decides to embark on a new career... as a pornstar. The 'Clandestine Boys' studio isn't at all what he expected... Oh this was such an entertaining ensemble AU where everyone basically works in a porn industry. Sweet and funny and with some awesome background pairings.

Disaster Boy - Gabe/Pete. As a rule, when this pairing is written with a d/s dynamic I tend to prefer it the other way around to what it is here. However, this completely sold Gabe as a top struggling with his sadism to me. Realistic, painful and funny in all the right places. Bonus points for excellent Ryland in a supporting role. Mind the warnings, the 'scene gone wrong' part was gut wrenching.

I 4 U & U 4 Me - Patrick/Pete. Ah, I do so love 'pretend boyfriends' cliché and this fic gives a wholly enjoyable romp around it.

run for ur life & take all that u can. xo. - Patrick/Pete, AU. FOB is a hard core band! Werewolves! Mate bonds! And just a rolling, roaring, sweaty, ride of a fic. The Pete voice in this is excellent.

Untitled - Frank/Mikey, other background pairings, AU. Don't let the 'comment fic' status fool you because this is a completely charming take on the 'from bffs/room mates to lovers' cliche you all know I adore madly. Bonus on them both being grad students and an excellent use of background characters. Short but sketches out the whole 'verse in vivid detail.

But It's a Good Refrain - Arthur/Merlin, AU.
This fandom has some excellent modern day AUs and this and the fic below are by an author who writes some of the best ones. Here, Merlin is a radio host offering relationship advice for listeners, and Arthur has some opinions about the validity of said advice. Funny, engaging, smart and with a wonderful ensemble cast.

Every Story is a Love Story - Arthur/Merlin, AU. All the excellent qualities as above, except this time everyone works in a publishing industry. Arthur is launching a gay romance line and Merlin is his star author. Semi autobiographical novels follow... Wonderful.

Octopus steals my video camera and swims off with it while it's recording (it's a fandom okay)

Texts From Cephalopods - so uh, everyone in the internet has already read this, right? Like even those people not in the fandom. Even the octopus. But. Just in case you haven't yet, you should do so. Immediately. Because "It is a well-established fact in marine biology that the octopus is the drunk texter of the cephalopod family." Hilarious, be sure to check all the youtube links.

Sin City - Dean/Sam. A very interesting twist to the episode 'Sin City'. Well-executed, dark, sad, and entirely believable.

Your Heart On My Skin - Dean/Sam. Uneraged wincest (Sam is 16), boys go undercover in prep school to investigate some mysterious and increasingly violent events, and end up having to pretend to be boyfriends in order to sell the cover. The relationship development is sensuous whilst staying in character for the ages and the case itself is an interesting one. Extra bonus points for feeding deliciously into my 'painting/writing on body' kink.
